I’ve rescued 2 colonies last week. I feed mine a lot of sugar syrup when I catch a new swarm to build them up. They need it to build comb for the Queen to lay eggs and build up strong before winter hits. They do better in a big cluster. The second year I don’t feed them sugar. I’m in hot, dry Texas and once summer hits there’s very little food available for them.

I think it is wonderful that you, along with Dr. Leo, are teaching natural beekeeping methods that have stood the test of time. I am certain, like myself, many people did not have this knowledge, as it has been replaced over time. Catching swarms of local bees is the correct path. Why buy bees when you can go out and catch some already acclimated to our own area. It makes perfect sense. Please keep the beekeeping videos with Dr. Leo coming! Thank you so very much!

Buying bees is not a scam but free bees are always great! Overwintering successfully has more to do with the management practices and health of the bees than it does with bought vs caught honey bees. There are so many ways to manage bees and this is just one.

I’ve had 2 swarms move into a vacant hive box. Both were very dangerous colonies. Must have been Africanize. No fun at all. My German Shepherd would not even want to go outside to the back yard. Where I live I never saw honeybees but I tried swarm traps anyway... no luck. I think because I'm so far from a town and I'm surrounded for miles and miles by a fir forest (for lumber production). I finally bought bees last year and they're doing good in the insulated layens hive. Thank you Dr Leo!
@Alkarasu
@Alkarasu 9 ай бұрын
Well, if you never saw any bees or swarms it might mean that you're in luck and may actually exploit it for your benefit (and even some nice profit if it goes well). Due to your isolation, you'll be the only source of drones in the area, which means you can choose who your new queens mate with, and that would enable you to do some good selective breeding. Isolated places are naturally valued among beekeepers for that purpose.

Swarm relocation tip: I have done this to every swarm i catch and it works. Take down the trap at night with a screen taped over it. Put the trap right next to the hive they will be transferred to. Put branches with leaves on them right in front of the trap totally covering the trap entrance, then remove the screen from the entrance. This will force the bees to realize they have been moved and they will reorient themselves to that specific location. This method allows you to move a trap any distance close by. It always works for me except for maybe a dozen stragglers at the old location. I learned it on KZbin as well while i was researching this problem of relocation. Leo, you’re the best! I started keeping bees following your advice since 2020. Everything is going so well! And no chemicals or expenses. Thank you for everything!!!!

All you need is a couple used frames that smell like bees to put inside the box and sugar water with a drop of lemongrass oil in a clean spray bottle. Spray the box twice a day inside with the mix, starting in March. No feeders needed.. Never have I had to buy bees, but I do give them away, when they swarm out.

The problem is that people need to take a weekend class from a master beekeeper before getting bees. I am a second year beekeeper. I took a weekend class and then did a one year mentorship...Bees die over winter usually because they were not treated for varroa mites prior to going into winter. Colonies shrink during winter so if your mite count is high and the colony is small they will not be able to control the mites..They also need to be feed sugar water or pollen so they don't starve over winter. You don't have to feed sugar water if you leave frames of stored honey in the box. The biggest problem is that people think they put a box in their yard, and that's it done... That's not the case... So now you catch a swarm ... Does anyone here know what to do next? When do you add a second box, when do you make a split, when do you feed them,what does the brood pattern look like, do you see eggs, do you have hive beetles or mites....ect ect. Take a weekend class, people, before getting bees..

We live in the heart of farm land in Southern Ontario, the mite load here is high with lots of hives used for pollination of crops.We also have winter that confines the bees for months to the hive. I have yet to meet a beekeeper who doesn't treat for mites. I've been told that natural beekeeping won't work here. Has anymore had success keeping bees without the use of chemicals in such conditions? My bee supplier raises them less than 20 minutes from our property, so they are local aclimatized strains, just not wild. Much love and respect Stacy and Doug for everything you share. I have this exact swarm trap and haven’t been successful but now I see I wasn’t doing several key things correctly! Thank you for this! As a side note, I currently have bees in Dr Leo’s horizontal hive. I bought the bees from a local apiary and they came with small hive beetles - I’m having a horrible time controlling them. I’m thinking that catching a local swarm I wouldn’t have this issue right off the bat.

Thanks Doug I just got into honey bees because I found a swarm and decided I wanted to keep it and the guy that helped me contain this one was generous to give me a box and a frame. So now I'm into beekeeping learning all about it so this is perfect time and for me.

Douglas, I just bought my first bee hive today. They are bees that were raised in my area for many years. They are not southern bees. I put them in the hive and they are doing well. Blessings

My dad began beekeeping after a swarm went into our chimney. He bought a local swarm from a local apiary. Probably the same man who removed the swarm from our chimney. They really helped our vegetable garden and orchard, but the best honey came from the tulip poplar trees.

Absolutely the best and by far the most informative video i have seen on bee keeping! He explains to perfection how to assemble the kit. I can't wait to start my own. Honey has been my go to sweetner since i was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and I dont like using artificial sweetners. Honey does not raise my glucose levels and its a blessing to have. Thank yall for the video and thank you to the bees for being so damn sweet😊

The first big lie of beekeepeng is buying bees, the second big lie is that you need a lot of complex equipment and stuff. The bigger bussines in beekepeeng isn´t selling honey, or renting hives for pollination, the big money is on sellin beekeeping supplies, because beekeepers get hypnotized by all the weird fancy stuff that promise to help them to keep their hives alive. The only thing you really need is a smoker, a suit, and a simple DIY hive that you can build from scratch. The kenya hive is the best on every aspect, super simple, and you can use it to catch your bees, to produce honey, queens, royal jelly, whatever you want.

Doug, you are so SWEET to tell us about how to raise the bees the right way for everyone. Something I'm noticing - you are breathing really hard. EMF and directed energy weapons can do this. Just sayin'. Don't want anything to happen. God Bless.

Thanks for letting people know what Dr. Leo advises, horizontal hives and catch local bees with swarm boxes! Great ideas to have healthy bees! I love the trick to imped the wax on the wire. Nice, put propolis inside the swarm box to attract the swarm of bees. Great trick too! Then lemon grass scent! So put them about 10 feet up in the tree. Thanks Dr. Leo for explaining how that all is done! Love all you guys help us with! Thanks!

I got some honey and a couple other honey products from the horizontal hive fellow, Dr Leo. They came in tiny bottles and were extremely expensive for the size. The honey was obviously already fermenting when it was shipped because it popped the tops off the jars from the pressure. Staining honey all down my pantry cupboards. You'd think he would have clean bottling processes. It was a VERY awful experience!
