I was a DCP at Walt Disney World in 2012 and got to take a few tours of the Haunted Mansion. Not only was it cool to see everything with the lights on, but they told us the true story about the man with the cane. He was an older cast member who liked to play practical jokes on guests and fellow cast members. He timed everything just right so he could hop on and off the doom buggies in the right places, get noticed, and go hide his hat, cape and cane and return as if nothing happened with nobody the wiser. When he retired, he revealed the secret to his cast members and friends.

There was a "soft" opening of the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland on August 9, 1969. I rode it that day as I was visiting the park on my 14th birthday and I vaguely remember seeing the original Hat Box Ghost in the attic scene.

Because in Walt’s day, most rides were based on recent or fairly recent movies (Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Dumbo). Heck, Sleeping Beauty was still four years from coming out and they based the park centrepiece on it! This is why it doesn’t make sense to me when people complain about the exact same thing being done today.

I'd say Phantom Manor is my favorite one even though I've never been to it, while it is more extreme and grotesque in nature than the original attractions, I find it rather fascinating.... plus I just love the Phantom as a character concept, a skeletal figure (or even sometimes a corpse) being the ghost host, and the story behind it is just.... I think a word to use there is phenomenal? idk.... I just love the concept behind it honestly ^^

My first visit to Disneyland Paris was in 1995. I worked for 5 years in Disneyland Paris, I had training to be a park guide and have visited it the park and phantom manor tons of times. This is the very first time I hear something about Phantom Manor being inspired or whatsoever on the Phantom of the opera. I think it is a bit of wishful thinking combining/mistaking the name Phantom Manor and Phantom of the Opera because there is not a single piece of reference within the attraction or building itself.

@@vincevdijk7430 The imagineer revealed that the manor was indeed inspired by the Phantom of the Opera during its reopening
@mollysimpson2335
@mollysimpson2335 4 жыл бұрын
@@vincevdijk7430 I'm really sorry about this little essay, I just have way to much time to analyze this media lol. The costume that the phantom wears within the manor is very similar to the Red Death costume the phantom wears in both the book and of course the musical. And while Henry Ravenswood in life is not deformed, he is shown to be a skeleton and a corpse in death (unlike many of the other apparitions in the manor) and that is exactly what Erik is described to look like in the book. He's waxy and thin and has no nose, he basically just looks like a skeleton or a living corpse. Plus the possessive father character who tries to/does kill the love interest of the girl, seems like a really similar comparison to me (though the phantom in Poto is also *in love* with christine). And in the book, Erik asks Christine to choose the scorpion or the grasshopper, scorpion signifying him (Erik) and the Grasshopper signifying freedom. If Christine chooses the grasshopper, he has the entire opera house rigged to blow up, basically if he can't have her, no one can. If I stretch a little bit, that seems sort of similar to the whole thunderbird thing. Let me explain that cause i'm really stretching lol. My thought process on this is that, Melanie has freedom (the grasshopper) because her father is dead due to the thunderbird/mining explosion, and probably a significant amount of people in the town (though if Christine chose the grasshopper, she'd definitely die too) So it kind of echoes the opera house explosion. With her fathers death, her love is killed by the Phantom so even though the guy wasn't taken out directly by the explosion, Henry Ravenswood still managed to kill him like Erik would kill Raoul. Phantom Manor is a heck of a lot more depressing than Poto cause in Poto at least Erik eventually lets Christine go on to live her life. Poor Melanie.

Having a relative as an imagineer, I've been going to the Disney parks most of my life. My earliest memory of Disneyland was actually of the stretching gallery in Anaheim's Haunted Mansion. While I've only been to the two in the US, I can say my favorite is in Anaheim (though I've only been on the Orlando one once). The Haunted Mansion in general is my favorite ride of all time and my life goal is to ride every Mansion/Manor ride in the world at least once.

@@TherealRNOwwfpooh Oh, please. It's strictly a Chinese government thing against Western depictions of the supernatural. The Japanese love scary ghost stories. As do many Chinese. The Chinese import a lot of supernatural (ghost) horror anime from Japan, including Bleach, Ghost Story, and several vampire stories (which also contain ghosts). The Chinese government are the ones against "Western" Ghost stories, but when the Japanese adapt Western style ghost stories, the Chinese are allowed it.

I’m shocked you didn’t bring up the infamous Crying Child Ghost in one of the Haunted Mansions in the US. For those unaware: there is a rumor that there is the ghost of a crying child in one of the Haunted Mansions whose ashes were spread there. It is said that he is usually found at the end of the ride, crying for his mother.

I love Disneyland because it’s the og and you can feel the love that went into it. For Disney world I love the mansion aesthetic and the the interactive stuff they have for their lines. Phantom manors story is more sad and dark. So honestly I think I love all of them the same because of all of their differences.

The Leota in the ball is voiced by Eleanor Audley (who also voiced Maleficent and Lady Tremaine). Little Leota was voiced by Leota Toombs herself. So I think Peach Plays got mixed up with Haunted Mansion Holiday where Kim Irvine, Leota Toombs' daughter, portrays Leota's face (though Susanne Blakeslee did the voice). There is no Little Leota in this version, rather a Little Sally that takes her place.

I like the architecture of WDW Haunted Mansion. But I prefer the ride of Disneyland. Re Paris. It does indeed look like the psycho house. But I think to enjoy it I think you have to know the story. Esp when you go underground to hell. And one more thing. People shut the hell up when you're on the ride. Immerse yourself into the world of the ride. None of the rest of us give a shit about your opinions about the ride. And we can hear you. Respect

I agree, the WDW one is much more of an ominous, creepy, looking building, the kind you would steer clear of in real life, where as Disneyland's looks like a welcoming home you would want to go into. I prefer the original though as far as the ride.

Another AWESOME Video! I remember the day (in Anaheim's Park) when, after something like 46 years "The Hatbox Ghost" was finally 'returned' (or should that be 'Resurrected'?) back into the Haunted Mansion--people came literally from all over to be there. "Mystic Manor" also looks like an incredible ride that should be introduced into all the parks! One more thing though (and folks who work at both parks chuckle that you're a real 'Disney Insider' if you know this bit of trivia: The attraction in Anaheim is "The Gracey Mansion" (after Imagineer Yale Gracey) while the one in Florida is "The Gorey Mansion" (after the character in the original back-story, "Captain Gorey".) Also, that's not the "Ghost Host" seen hanging at the conclusion of the stretching room sequence--it's supposed to be "Master Gracey" ("...Gone to rest; No mourning please, at his request.") They used much of this story in the 2003 movie with Eddie Murphy. After seeing this vid though, they should be making a film of "Mystic Manor" instead!

Phantom Manor is so well done, except for the fact that it's literally 10x as dark inside as the US versions so it's hard to see every detail when you're actually there 🙄 which is the case in a lot of the DLP rides that I never understood while living there - do Europeans have better sight? Also the reclining woman/panther painting in Paris is also in WDW 😊
@115DELDE

I have been in Phanto manor all of my life. The ride is dark enough for your eyes to see everything, its just that video cameras cant. If you look at youtube videos, you get the feeling that riders cant see anything, but its not like that. If anything, its like the space mountain "effect". Riders can see everything but the cameras cant.
@rach_laze
@rach_laze 6 жыл бұрын
There's a good theory there but I think it's more the simple fact that Europe is darker in general than America, colder, cloudier etc and we also use dimmer lightbulbs and streetlights (hardly any big lit up billboards and such) so that probably plays a factor so our eyes are more adjusted to the dark, when I go over to America the first couple of days is a bit of an affront to the senses with everything bigger brighter and louder until you adjust and it mellows out, my grandad used to say it's like a floodlight when a candle will do, applying the analogy to the ride you can get more details with the floodlights but the candles make it spookier like there's something missing
@rach_laze
@rach_laze 6 жыл бұрын
If you think this is dark you should watch povs of some of the other rides we have over here 😂 13 or even Hex or Duel at Alton towers, alice in wonderland and Valhalla at pleasure beach or (I think) toad hall at paultons park we like to have the darkness shrouding things in mystery, duel is pretty much a direct comparison to the MIB ride in Florida so a good place to start if you're interested
@TherealRNOwwfpooh
@TherealRNOwwfpooh 5 жыл бұрын
The reason that is would be because the rider's eyes can pick up details a camera cannot. As for the darker aspects, the gothic Victorian look of Florida's Mansion is what the local neighborhood cemeteries in Europe generally look like & the plantation Antebellum pristine Mansion in Anaheim doesn't mesh well with European visual culture, so neither of them would be SCARY enough, nor WORTHY enough to be called "Haunted Mansion" in Europe, since Europe (specifically France, Germany & Denmark) is where all of the GRIMM versions of Disney's more saccharine fairy tale adaptions come from!
@TherealRNOwwfpooh

I was 12 years old in 1969 when the Haunted Mansion story/record came out and the Haunted Mansion (Anaheim) ride opened. I loved both the story and the ride ever since. Everything in the Haunted Mansion is tied to the afterlife where some spirits do not "move on" but linger in the place that they feel most comfortable "living" in. It is classic genealogy based past and present storytelling coupled to ghostly apparitions, old haunted dwellings, and graveyard history. The Haunted Mansion reminds all of us that life and death links all of us together forever, and that is one of the most comforting feelings of all.

Two things. You said that phantom manor has the exsclusive portrait of the woman on the couch but im pretty sure its also in the disneylands mansion. Also in the attic at disneyland no one ever looks to the right when constance is saying her lines but there is baby stuff (stroller and like blocks) makes it so much more mysterious if hatchaway had a kid with one of her many husbands

Yes, the lady werecat is at Disneyland. She was always my favorite of the portraits. She wears a black catsuit while the Paris version seen in the video is wearing white.

I haven't been there in several years. Before they changed things. I still remember her heart being lit up and beating loud while she held flowers and a candle. Now apparently she holds an ax and talks. Maybe they added the baby stuff then.
