Not having a webcam/being able to afford a webcam in 2003 was pretty normal. Nowadays you can get not just a webcam for under $30 but a *good* one *with* a mic. Add in modern smartphones and there's basically no excuse. If someone consistently avoids showing their face other people just assume their lying about any number of things from age to gender. I'm sure it still happens today, of course it does, but modern internet goers are way more jaded, way more paranoid. Even someone as young as 10 would be suspicious. Back in 2003 this behavior was shocking but it was just because it was so new and exploitable, idk that "catfishing" was even a term we used yet.

Hey guys once again another great video . When Dave said he was surprised that there wasn’t a movie made about this case it made me start looking around . The diagnosis I think, you are thinking of is Folie à deux ('folly of two', or 'madness [shared] by two'). I think it’s also what two sisters from Sweden, who went to the uk and tried running across a highway and got into a fight with the cops, were diagnosed with. Not sure, but I remember it being mentioned in the documentary about the incident.
@StarOpal2 жыл бұрын
Also sisters Christine and Léa Papin in 1926 is an early (first documented? might be wrong on that one) case of folie à deux, that the movie Murderous Maids is about. Or the story of Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme that inspired the movie Heavenly Creatures.

I sorta disagree with Daz's 'red flag'.. it was 2003? not everyone had a web cam.. even in present day I still don't have a camera attached to my PC.. I only have the built-in cameras on tablets and smart phones. But on the other hand, if you go on a video chat system and then say you don't have a camera set up and ready, I can see how that would be weird. But, no, I don't expect everyone to just have a video chat setup ready to go on a moment's notice.

What I don't get about thus story is why after surviving the stabbing he didn't just keep up the lie why did he tell police who stabbed him?
@andirandolph88302 жыл бұрын
Maybe because he knew Mark would find him out if he went with the “attacked by strangers” story that Janet told him to tell. Only Mark was supposed to know that. This was nearly 20 years ago, so John probably didn’t think the police could so easily discover that he was behind all those fake profiles. I really think that, at first, he just didn’t want Mark to know that he was behind it all, so he pretended like he didn’t know.
