Daz is correct. In college football, if the ball carrier hits the ground, the play is over. He does not have to be touched. In the NFL, if you're not touched, you can get back up and run with the ball.

If they catch the ball and fumble before a knee, butt, or elbow hits the ground you can recover it or pick it up and run. If they don’t have complete control of the ball (bobbling or not getting Two steps down then it is considered not complete.) if it’s deemed the receiver does not have full control and they drop it then it’s incomplete (not considered a fumble). If he has control and then gets the ball knocked out it is considered a fumble.

I’d say somewhere between 80 to 90 percent of these hits are now penalties. Unprotected, blind side, targeting(hitting with the top of the helmet). 15 yard penalties everywhere

I think college players have alot to prove and need to make a name for themselves to get into the NFL. They put everything on the line and I think that's why in my opinion more people enjoy this over NFL. Between the rivalry and the loud band/halftime shows and the overall energy in the game leading to big hits. It's amazing to watch and even more exciting watching in person.

The chains came out to measure and clearly showed the football was short of the 1st down marker but for some reason the refs gave Michigan a 1st down anyway. The very next play Jadeveon Clowney (6'6" 270) shoots through the line line a rocket and blows up the running back, knocks his helmet off and without even a pause grabs the fumble with one hand, looking for the end zone. If the receiver catches the ball and takes a couple steps and then gets hit in the ball comes loose, it's a fumble. If the receiver grabs it but is hit instantly in the ball comes loose, they often just call that an incomplete pass because he never fully had true possession

Major Wright was mentioned. He was a Free Safety, so he was a head hunter. He was free to run the field. When we played ball when we were young. They would have the whole team in a circle, and one guy would be in the middle. The coaches would call which player to hit the guy in the middle.

In order for it to be a catch the receiver has to physically possess the ball while maintaining complete control of the ball and make a football move which usually means he has to take a couple of steps. If you are not able to make a football move before you go out of bounds or before your body is down than you have to maintain control of the ball before you go go out of bounds or not let the ball hit the ground until you gain control. Once that has been accomplished, if the ball comes out it is a live ball (unless you are down before it comes free) both teams can pick it up. If the offense recovers the ball it's down at the spot of the fumble or where the ball is recovered whichever is the furthest back, unless the player who fumbled the ball picks it up then they can advance the ball forward. If the defense recovers the ball they can advance the ball no matter where the fumble occurred. The reason you see them stop is because it was ruled an incomplete pass because they didnt maintain control of the ball and make a football move the other part to remember is the ground can not cause the fumble if the reason you lost control of the ball is because you hit the ground with the ball it is down there.

There are supposed to be people around the receivers, they have blockers and their job is the watch the receivers back. That’s what you see if done correctly a sack almost off screen. That’s the blockers protecting the receiver, then once the receiver gets the ball, the blockers surround him and try and make a hole for the receiver to take off and head to the field goal.

13:01 Ball's either caught or it isn't, the snag here for the uninitiated is that the referee has to make a judgement call based on whether the player who receives does so and accomplishes a "football move", usually a couple of steps. If a player catches the ball and takes a step while still adjusting to a running stance but gets leveled and the ball comes out, the refs are probably going to call that an incompletion IF the ball hits the ground afterwards. If a defensive player snags the loose ball while it's in the air and hasn't bounced, that's an interception instead of a fumble.... but if the player makes that football move, 2-3 steps or establishes a running stance, and the ball is knocked loose, then it's a fumble and it doesn't matter if it hits the ground, it needs to be recovered by somebody as it's still a live ball. Catch > no football move > ball knocked out > hits ground > incomplete, dead ball Catch > no football move > ball knocked out > taken before hits ground > interception, play continues Catch > football move > ball knocked out > hits ground OR taken in air > fumble, live ball, continue play

Yeah you can still hit hard legally. Pads and the helmet give a sense of false security and become a weapon because you'd never hit someone with that amount of force if you had no pads on. The brain is still a floating entity within the skull so the g-force alone causing the brain to smack up against your skull isn't being stopped by a helmet. It's hard though, because many helmet to helmet tackles are incidental. You're suppose to get low and go for their hip to chest area but as an offensive player you're trying to get low too, so at the last second you're going to duck your head.

Hi Boys... The reason that the college players sometime stop when then pick up a fumble and other times run is because in college football, once the player touches the ground (falls, or touches a knee or elbow) the play is dead. However, if they can pick up a fumble while still on their feet, they can run with it. Same with interceptions. If they catch it and don't fall, they can run with it, but if they catch it and fall the ball is dead at the spot they touched the ground. Also, to be a catch, the player must demonstrate complete control and then make a "football move", such as turning to run with the ball. That is why some of the videos where the receiver barely has the ball and it is knocked out of his hands is NOT a fumble. It is an incomplete pass. Of course if you are running with the ball and lose it that is always a fumble.

As far as picking up a fumble and returning it. It's a judgement call, if you can secure it and not be considered "down," meaning you aren't touched while on the ground, go for it. However, simply securing the fumble recovery for a turnover is the top priority. You may be thinking about a grab and go while not getting a strong grip on the football and lose it yourself.

The thing about college football is that you have guys that are more "normal", aka college football is the highest level of football that they will ever get to; going against guys who are going to easily make it into the NFL and do really really well. Many of these hits (but not all) would be illegal now, and in fact some were illegal at the time of some of the newer clips, hence the penalty flags flying. Leading with the crown of the helmet, forceable helmet to helmet contact, targeting defenseless player., etc, can all be flagged now and result in a 15 yard penalty and automatic ejection. I played in the '70s when the equipment wasn't as good, effective, or in some cases even yet in existence, and there were far fewer rules about hitting. In fact, hits like these were encouraged and rewarded. I played both ways, LB (linebacker) and TE (tight end). I got lit up once when I was coming across the field with target fixation on the ball carrier and did not see the lead blocker (running back) coming at full speed to cut me off. I saw him a split second before the collision. We were both running at full speed and he led with his helmet and got me right under the chin. Bam. Good hit. I stayed in the game but didn't remember the next couple of plays. However, even worse was one time when it was me who delivered the "decleater". I was at TE, and it was a running play. I had to get the seal block on the LB, who did not see me waiting for him as he came laterally at full speed with his eyes on the ball carrier. I hit him right in the numbers and laid him out, but the hit lifted him off the ground and his knees got me in the lower ribs right under my shoulder pads. Again, I didn't show how much it hurt to keep from coming out of the game, but wow, it hurt. Rib injuries are notoriously slow to heal. Mine took probably a solid year before they healed enough to where another hit didn't set them off all over again. Rib pads weren't very common back then but I got a set and wore them just to give them a chance to heal, otherwise any contact would have been too painful to allow me to play. It's violent game, and playing hurt is part of the deal.
