I can't help but to wonder what the quality of life is like for the guy now and if it was even worth surviving. I wonder if his face is even functional after that. He's likely blind, deformed, or unable to sallow, if not all of the above. This is a frustrating situation cause someone like this should have never had access to chief knives, but the law says this is a grown man who can do what he wants. Families need more legal power to care for their mentally ill relatives.

Those issues could be remedied and forced institutionalization could be resumed with little worry for greater societal harm. It's hard to argue that people like the subject of this video are better off when given the legal ability to refuse all help.

I had a schizo neighbor off his meds who was stabbing holes in his walls and hearing voices and making veiled threats at other tenants. Cops couldn't do a thing due to state laws. The guy basically had to attack someone before they could get involved.

He's either very experienced, or just built different. People's ability to handle stress is a spectrum, but that spectrum necessarily has extreme ends; it's difficult to assess which it is here, but I suspect combat experience via OIF/OEF with the casual, yet precise administration of medical aid. I'd put biiiig money on this not being his first gunfight by far, and I don't think most of them were within CONUS.

I think it's really rare. But the trait makes for great law enforcement or security personnel. To bad we can't bottle it up.

Having worked as part of a LEO/Crisis team, there was no de-escalating this guy. Eventually somebody was going to have to go hands on in order to transport him to get psychiatric care. The only way this could've gone better is trying to lure him into a better location so that he doesn't have weapons around when Officers have to go hands on. This Officer still did a very good job throughout this interaction.

@@frankflex4465 One should NEVER attempt to shoot for limbs, especially in close quarter fights. He shot shot twice for center-mass and missed, which is normal, hitting his face and arm. You lack knowledge and experience in policing. It's comparable to thinking you saw a war movie once and played some Call of Duty and so now you're ready for war and can talk strategy. Go be a police officer for a year then come back and let us know what you think.

I love these guys. They truly support our leos and know they're not the ones who should be answering these calls. They have they're hands full enough with criminals. Fortunately, they're rolling out mental health response teams in more cities and it's proving to be a success. Anyway, these guys like me, believe in protecting women and children above all, and making this world a better place. The world desperately needs more men like this. Absolutely one of the best de-escalation attempts by an officer I have seen yet. I pray for the young man to have a fast recovery and get the treatments/meds that he needs to stabilize himself and also for a fast recovery for the officer. I hope those that call for a "defund the police" see this and appreciate what it take from an officer to try and do all the right things. We need to FUND departments to have the staff to help in these kinds of situations.

Not bad, it's that his fight/flight system is in a feedback loop the upper part of the brain ceases being part of the conversation at that point and it's all animal instinct. My father hasn't left the house on 3.5 months, not even into the back garden due to the terror of anxiety, its powerful stuff and enough to make an anorexic starve themselves to death. If you ever have to deal with it you will rapidly develop both sympathy/ pity and a sober understanding that this can happen to anyone.

The subtle adjustment when the officer called him "sir" twice, he seemed to cooperate more and came out. Perhaps the angle of appeal to authority or ego as an angle of negotiation. Idk if you know how far you grown but 3 years ago my teacher in criminal justice was showing use some videos of yours to help teach different situations and awareness. Still watch you til this day and seeing how far you have come in 3 years is pretty incredible. Keep the grind and keep doing you bc you doing great.

He brushed off the psychological stress of the knife attack and shooting like he was folding his laundry. I am awestruck how calm he sounded after the attack.

This office has excellent communication skills. The main ingredient to keep incidents from escalating when dealing with mentally unstable people.

Thanks to this officer this guy was able to live and maybe straighten out his life, thankfully the officer was not injured further. This officer is a hero!

I like how you guys mention a Psych Team with a nurse AND an officer for protection. A lot of times when discussions happen on what to do it is often drowned out with "Cant wait to see a nurse try to talk down a psyco with a knife" or ETC. Just like with all other emergency servies depending on the circumstances of the call the responders will vary. Sometimes you may only need to nurse. Sometimes like this the person has weapons so a LEO will be their to protect the nurse, bystanders and the person having issues. Maybe the person is having a medical and mental issues and needs to be calmed for EMT to load them into an ambulance. Its not rocket science.
