As usual...great advice. From what I am hearing there are two additional issues plaguing our institutions and officers. A hands off attitude dictated by management with criticism if you need to lay hands on an I/M. The other point...new hires who are not invested in the ethos of being a C/O and are basically just slackers. But they are allowed to remain because they are a warm body. At my former institution ( I'm retired 20 years) an inmate refused to come out of his cell for court call...used to be we'd gather some troops and the I/M WOULD go to court. Now...basically do nothing other than advise the court he won't come out. My how times have changed.

I agree with you that the hands off approach is making matters worse. There needs to be a middle ground with everyone trained on what should be hands-on and what should not be hands-on. Allowing disciplinary problems to roam without consequences is a time bomb waiting to explode

I feel lucky that I have never had been in a serious injury. I originally worked with juveniles and I was thrown into a concrete door by a 16 year old girl. I had a concussion and a hurt pride - and also later realizing that the other staff was having “relations” rather than watching the camera. However, now I’ve been working with the biggest hard core males and I haven’t had a single incident. But I do trainings once a month. You need to always have new ideas, old reminders, and so forth. I am in mental health but we get guys that are in the middle of a manic episode and they have no cuffs or anything. Sometimes a guard will just bring them into the office, close the door and go out to have a smoke or chat on the phone. I have asked that more protection is done since someone like myself, being 5’1 is in a room with males over 6 feet tall who are in a very aggressive state of mind. And we have nothing in place except our ability to defend ourselves.
