Very informative video. Transparency is so important not just in the process of recruiting but also between police forces and the public. I believe a lack of transparency in police spending, policies, etc. to the public as a major issue that’s causing officers to take more flak, get less support, and overall is eroding trust in policing as an institution. My dad was a cop, and several of my friends are in the process of joining. I have a ton of respect for the work, and I hope to see leaders both in and outside of major police forces taking steps to restore public trust and confidence in the system.

Always wanted to be a police officer since i was a little kid, now I'm in university reconsidering. After working as a police cadet/auxillary police I've met so many officers unhappy and burnt out. I don't blame them either after being more exposed to the lifestyle, risks, and day to day part of it. Doesn't seem worth it anymore to work long hours, damage my body/my mind, etc.

Smart man to reconsider it. After 21 yrs I can’t wait to get out of it. It was my dream to be a cop. Turned into a nightmare. Got injured in line if duty. In for surgery things went wrong. Came out worse with permanent disability. Wcb turned their backs and so did my police department. Yes I’m disgruntled they support cops that get charged criminally on the job better than ones that get injured.

Thank you, in Toronto! Yes that would be a good topic actually. I’m a licensed carpenter and worked with the carpenters union before becoming a cop and being part of the police union/association. There was a clear difference. I appreciate that and will touch on that. Before I do, the police union for Toronto was great and even currently every union rep has a vested interest and I think cares about the members.

I agree with you about having too many officers being tasked with community events. We need more officers on the front line. Community police is important but front line officers are needed in light of how many officers we need to handle the job and not have so many calls in pending. jobs like officers making pancakes, taking kids riding bikes, skiing and the like need to be on hold for a while until we can bring up the manpower numbers.

I have to disagree with this comment. I think community events are a good thing. I will say back in the 80's and 90's police weren't as involved with community events. We need more officers that work on foot patrol in high crime areas when community events are not taking place.

One of the main the problems with policing, is training. Officers don’t train or not enough. The academies need to be a lot longer where it teaches the reality of the job.

I joined the Rcmp at 21, lasted 12 years on GD doing Surrey then northern reserves Policing. Half way through I wouldn’t suggest ppl join, and I certainly would not now. Unless massive changes are made to the “Justice system” and police forces being treated as microcosms of parliament hill, it’s not worth it.

Maybe they should 8 hour shifts rather than 12 hour shifts. Most places have 8 hour shifts. Also, there is a city in the U.S. that has part time officers that work weekends. Maybe the Toronto Police Service should do the same as well.

Went through RCMP and got in along with Peel, and had Durham ask me if I would consider it. With my background I strongly considered it and went through the whole process and got accepted but the change in culture with the low morale, politicization, being spat on and on top of the low wage (I make way more in “just” a trade now) for what you go through on the daily it just isn’t worth it anymore. My hat is off to the ones that still want to and do it on the daily. The good ones that is. Cheers to the ones who stand the line and keep their integrity to the core. Not too many humans like that these days. The Canadian justice system is a revolving door and I would find it extremely challenging to find my job fullfilling day in and out when you do the cop work qnd it gets tossed out or the accused is out on bail to reoffend. My wife (not a cop) tells me daily how much of a headache it is dealing with these sorts of people who are getting sentences and bail like they committed vandalism 20 years ago but nowadays someones arm almost gets chopped off or continuous drug peddling. The sentences and “rehabilitation” theories are not adding up with the crimes being committed today like they were years ago. Hard times to be an officer for sure.

Every police officer I know or have worked with agrees with that statement, and also I’d say the majority of the public does as well. It truly doesn’t make any sense whatsoever happening these days. Offenders prep reoffending while innocent people get hurt or worse. I don’t know what it’s not a bigger issue in media.

​@OfficerArsenault This is entirely my personal opinion, but it frustrates me to no end that people with no real-life experience are the ones making decisions that affect the masses simply because their degrees qualify them. They're essentially experimenting on citizens. Meanwhile, the public often blames law enforcement officers, whose hands are tied because lawmakers, also known as politicians, pass these experimental laws just to try them out. These suggestions typically come from analysts or advisors with no life experience, holding multiple, often useless, sociology degrees. 🤯

The part about shifts not getting together after work anymore is sad truth. People are not conversing in person at any job now. World at their fingertips with smartphones. I saw my friends struggle through Convoy protests. Married couple , on opposite police forces. Has their vacation cancelled and worked crazy hours without a break. They had no one to take care of their children…. Or bring to hockey games. Another friend lost his dream vacation to Hawaii… because of protests and fights 🙂‍↕️

What a great video. I never knew some cops had their vacations cancelled. That is horrible. I know I won’t be joining the RCMP because of all the problems in their force, however I’d like to get to know some municipal police officers first. I know I won’t be joining this year as there’s too many barriers but I would consider in a different year after moving to a city with the municipal police service in it. I would also consider moving somewhere with the OPP as the main service but know from what I’ve heard that’s it’s a super competitive service to get into. So, I think my first choice is a municipal service and second choice OPP. I have some choices to make and it might also depend on who would accept someone in their mid-thirties at the time. Oh and not see being autistic as a bad thing. So, there are a few barriers to work around first.

I have applied for my local department big city wont say where but I think theyre the best of the best in the country county and state. I would love to work for them because its home but I was disqualified and for good reason I had a DUI 2 and a half years ago when DQ now 3 I don't party anymore I don't really even drink anymore since im so focused on my physique and performance and health I don't have the time to waste it all on partying and drinking anymore like I use to ive had my fun till it wasn't anymore.I think my DUI incident really changed me and after I had a run in with a armed robber later where I was left to defend myself with my own hands I knew there was something in me that can potentially handle the stresses and scariness of the job where even the detectives were surprised how calm I handled myself after facing a potentially near death experience. I messed up not joining the military straight out of HS and doing law enforcement because I felt like thats what I wanted to do as a career but I pursued music instead I was good at it got called in by local musicians that I expected were gonna make it professionally but never happened and now ive realized law enforcement in my mid 20s after my self defense incident is really my calling I am always intrigued with the uniform the gear the high adrenaline situations the tactics the game of chess when you're planning an arrest on someone whos armed and barricaded. Being there for the families and victims at a car accident and one person has a broken leg (Saw all this on a ride along) even the legal stuff its fascinating ive learned so much from some of our departments recruiters and theyve helped changed my physical life for the better even now that im DQ im still studying, exercising, and planning on taking jui Jitsu and judo classes and speaking to a national guard or army recruiter to build a more redeemable portfolio for when I reapply to my department in 2-3 years. Ive made my mistakes but I also learned from it im 27 bout to be 28 soon and I hope to be able to get hired and do this career till I cant run anymore. Many officers nearing retirement often say they hate being a cop at that stage, especially after the trauma they’ve experienced, both mentally and emotionally. Why aren’t police officers in Canada allowed to carry while off duty? I can’t imagine running into a situation while off duty and you are not armed or if someone recognizes you that you are a police officer he’s armed and you’re not.

The problem with the current law enforcement system is that they work for a private corporation called the United States Corporation Company, registered in all states, including the District of Columbia. A United States citizen is by definition a person, a Corporation, not a living and breathing man or woman. Unfortunately all law enforcement officers at all levels were not taught this in law school or the police academy. I understand that they are just "doing their job" but doing their job requires true knowledge of Natural Law, Common Law, Constitutional Law, and laws that are non statutory. I know this because a cop personally admitted this to me as well as doing my own research for decades about law. I think all law enforcement needs to be retrained to be public servants for The People, not the Corporation. Only then will we see a reform going back to the Constitution

I joined the RCMP in 2019, got thrown under the bus by my colleagues and as a result of that, I got terminated. Ive been trying to apply to other police forces since then... no luck. I wouldn't recommend RCMP to anyone though.

One of the questions people failed at most often years ago was the one about personal bias. We all have a bias, which can be controversial to even admit. If your answer is that you don’t have any bias at all and never have, that’s basically a failure. It’s admitting or recognizing, how you overcame it, what you learned. I’ll have to dig deeper, perhaps an interview with a recruiter.

When I joined Metropolitan Toronto Police Force in 1982 at 41 Division we had 5,600 sworn members and we were short staffed. Today we have 800 less sworn officers and the population in Toronto has doubled. Toronto should have atleast 12,000 sworn officers today.

I want your take on this but before anything i know this only a handful of teacher as most teachers support the police. Their been instances where i have seen teachers online like for example this creator called boots on the ground on tiktok who a teacher after asking him questions he made statement saying "the structure of what police doesn't help people but only protect property". And their was another teacher i saw who had posted things like defund the police and dismantle the police. I personally believe that these teachers should be reprimanded and possible fired from the position if they continue following reprimand because defund the police isnt a opinion and encourage kids they teach that it ok not to follow rules and lack of repsect for authority what your take on this

Yes I understand what you mean, for this is day that this is when personal vs professional accounts would come into play. If someone is online representing their employer then whether they like it or not what they say online is still reflective of the employer. Even on a personal, you couldn’t say racist things and Coast to get away with it. This past weekend there was a guy knocking people out after a game in the US, they found out where he worked and his employer fired him. I agree with that. Defund the police isn’t necessary a call for violence, it’s a statement which doesn’t make sense at all and is dumb lol but I’m not sure that would constitute a suspension or reprimand. The reason because they wouldn't want to make a kid who that xyz ethnicity feel unsafe in their classroom. Police work is about sacrifice. The sacrifice is no longer worth it. Police management is the problem. They have been woke since long before woke was a word. They always will be in the big cities and blue states, becuase they get their jobs from politicians. Police managers and politicians will sacrifice you to the mob to promote themselves. The answer is this simple: Nearly every major, and even minor, police agency requires their patrol officers to wear body worn cameras (BWC) to record nearly everything they do. Police supervisors and politicians are not required to do so when they are making the decisions about your career, whether to throw you to the wolves because you became a KZbin sensation, or really at any other time. Isn't it easier to record the conversations and work in the peaceful enviornment of an office than in the field? Of course it is. Management don't want you to know what they are saying or how they are working. Once they are willing (or are forced) to wear BWC and record all on the clock convesations, then people can think about being cops again. Until that occurs, there are plenty of other job out there where you can make a difference.
