This is godly tone. I discovered this technique from watching a Playthrough on an 8 string! I couldn't believe how amazing the tone in drop E tuning. This was the technique used using a Mesa single rectifier and engl 2x12

I was checking Studio Fredman over the past few months to see if/when they were selling the clips. I saw them being offered, I ordered one. I'm in California, took 3 weeks to arrive. Looks good. What do other people think of theirs?

this is actually a very common technique. its even better if one of the mics is a 421 instead of 2 57's

Not sure how to word it, but if my intent is to double track my guitar with the Fredman technique, should I leave both the sraight and angled mic panned to center and pan the two takes left and right?
@daltongtplayer4 жыл бұрын
Really cool! After hearing the combined guitars it is impossible to keep tracking with only one mic. Thanks!

Just a tip, maybe you know: if you hold strg and then hit the solo button you get "supersolo" meaning it does not just add the channel to the other soloed channels but mutes other already soloed channels. Very usefull for fast comparisons like here ... (at least in my Cubase version it works)
@diregremo6 жыл бұрын

Great idea to use it on the snare. Shoot across for more tone a angle down for attack.

Hey this was cool. Never heard of that technique and I’m not new to the game but it’s always nice to learn new things. A friend of mine makes a similar clip called the xclip for using pencil condenser mics along side a 57 or the like. Crazy how such a small unassuming piece of plastic can make one’s life in the studio so much easier. Anyway, I dig your videos man and hope you can do one where you record a whole song using only one mic and one pre and then do the same song using a completely different mic and pre and then a/b them to see how much of a difference a mic and pre make when stacked as a song. Keep up the good work. -Bori Afolabi

Cette technique est elle également viable pour les prises de son en concerts ? Ou seulement dédiée aux enregistrements studio ?

It can absolutely be used in live situations too.

Hey Ulf, I know this is off topic but maybe somebody else is still interested, too: I'd still like to get your forest reverb IRs but can't seem to find a way to sign up for anything on your website. Am I just too stupid or has something changed since?

Did he mention if both mics (angles and straight) should be at the same volume?
@hoborec4 жыл бұрын
Should have been more clear about that. It’s basically how you set the sound. One mic is bright and the other is dark. Then you balance by taste.
@retrocny56254 жыл бұрын
You adjust to taste until you get the result you want. For me personally, when using this technique on a 5150, I've always settled around having the off-axis mic about 5-6db quieter than the on-axis mic. I've followed this debate closely since like 2005. I've always thought the colony/clayman guitar tones were some of the best high gain rhythm tones ever recorded, and using this technique will definitely get you pointed in the right direction if that's the sort of sound you're looking for. A 5150 MKI(block letter even better) will get you even closer.
@padraig882 жыл бұрын
In your opinion, is it really 'bad' to not sum the two mics into a single track and to blend them in post production instead?
@JiihaaS Жыл бұрын
An experienced audio engineer here. Technically speaking the difference would be very minimal, and the technique works just fine regardless of how and when the summing is done. The angling of those mics is a way bigger factor, and essentially what makes this technique.

It's rad that Fredman is making an official one. I have some clips from the Wilkinson Audio site, but I don't know if those are the inaccurate ones (I think Glenn Fricker uses them). They work okay, but slip over time since the clip attaches to the straight 57 (which is a bummer). I just finished a metal project with a client where I recorded the guitars with two 57's fredman style and a wa87. I actually ended up muting the straight 57 track and went with the angled 57 and wa87 in the final mix. The straight 57 just sounded too harsh in my mix so I preferred it without it. So that's my preferred method now. Anyway, you can hear how it came out if you like. Great vids as usual bud. duvcon.bandcamp.com/album/problems-applications
@VortechBand4 жыл бұрын
The thing is, the Fredman one is 55 degrees, not 45 degrees like the Wilkinson one. According to Fred, the 55 degree sounds better to him than the 45.
