That thing was too big to be called a sword. Too big, too thick, too heavy and too rough. It was more like a large hunk of Iron."**** and The greatsword is an easily misunderstood weapon. A novice feels the heft and striking power of the weapon, and concludes that it rewards pure force. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is an indescribably complex tool, a lever and a thrusting wedge, and when wielded properly would shatter any sword you can name

Arnold Swartzeneger in the original Conan movies swung that long sword around and effortlessly held it stretched out in one hand, but it weighed *70+ POUNDS!* He probably could wield somewhere around ~110 pounds with two hands quite easily just by that one metric. But Guts' dragonslayer sword, based on it being at least 2 full inches thick, would weigh around 300-400 pounds, so he'd need a sword like this one in this clip, but maybe 3/4 inches thick.

In full plate i could see this sword working just fine but against someone dressed light with a light weapon they could just dance around you since they aren't carrying a stupid amount of extra weight and there weapons are likely decently balanced and super easy to use.

Greatswords were used historically by mercenaries, alongside halberds and spears. Essentially they are the same as a spear, but the shaft is nearly indestructible. If you're a mercenary, you don't have the same resources as a fully supplied military, so you invest in more durable equipment, and without uniform requirements, you can also have everything custom made to your personal preference. That's the context of how these weapons were invented, and they were popular for several hundreds of years. Spears are the true king of the battlefield, but only because steel is valuable and wood is cheap.

Real giant swords like Zweihanders are not impractical. As for closing distance, your dealing with a short spear-like weapon with a blade along most of its length. The only way to really engage a zweihander is to risk yourself or flank maneuver with a squad until one of you finally get a clean hit in without losses. Great swords are great at crowd control and were paired with pikemen, their role was to break into lines where pike heads were locked. It doesnt beat a proper spear or halberg or billhook when they arent occupied, it simply just isnt as long, doesnt deliver as much force. But it is a good median weapon, its a good play on the idea that a side arm ( a sword ) can preform on fair grounds against a primary weapon like most other to-handed weaponry. Now obvioisly this isnt a Zweihander, but trust there were cases of incredibly long and wide Zweihanders.

@cjdlegendary1795 2 күн бұрын
@DigitallyTwistedOutlaws1178 they are giant swords, by giant I mean it is classified as a two handed weapon with comparable reach to a spear. And with abit of looking around, you will find some stupidly sized Zweihanders. According to Google, they're about 213cm ( 84 inches or 7ft ), weighing upwards ( rounded up ) 9 pounds. Functionally, work 1:1 to their anime counter parts and is one of the few weapons I've seen where "spinning" is a viable strategy, mostly because with a sword that big the recoil of swinging will force you to spin anyway unless you awkwardly try counteract it. As for super strength requirements, uh, well, it's 9lbs spread across its length and you have the option to hold it by its mid section, doesn't sound like too big of a deal. Sure mass plus acceleration is a problem but if you let it spin you, your fine, carry out your strikes with the momentum, half sword if you need control.
@DigitallyTwistedOutlaws1178
@DigitallyTwistedOutlaws1178 2 күн бұрын
@@cjdlegendary1795 Fair enough. Though to be honest, I still disagree about the classification of Zweihanders as Giant Swords. Yes they get long and "heavy" in terms of normal/historical sword weight but not Giant sized. So Greatswords perhaps but not Giant Swords. I say that Giant Swords are modern inventions because they are. Despite what many naysayers say, I don't stand on any notion that Giant Swords are historical nor do I argue that they should have been used historically. I consider them a modern invention. So what classifies a sword as a Giant Sword? To me Giant Swords are generally: 35lbs and up. Metal. (Wood can be deadly but will break quickly) Extremely durable. Sharp and able to cut. Wieldable in a way that follows a giant sword form like my Colossus Technique or others' like Blade Flow).

@abarainosa
@abarainosa 6 ай бұрын
Except you're entirely wrong for a multitude of reasons. 1. My jab isn't like dropping a 45 lb plate directly downward into the ground. 2. It does not take a large amount of strength and effort to bring my jab back to guard my chin 3. A direct downward swing like this with a weapon this size cannot be instantly and effectively followed up with a successive series of attacks without greatly telegraphing i them via the complete transferal of bodyweight to control and move it. If you wanted show off a sword equivalent of a jab, why not use a technique that literally uses the same principle like a thrust? Probably cause moving a huge amount of weight away from your center of gravity makes it harder to control, and it doesn't attack the stationary bucket sitting on the ground at his feet.
@jancarlosnatano885
@jancarlosnatano885 6 ай бұрын
@@abarainosa I never said its exactly like a step-back jab. I said it uses the same principles. You step back and let the gigantic hunk of metal lean forward, then as it leans you slam downwards in an axe-chop. Obviously theres massive differences in fighting with a 75lbs+ slab of iron compared to literally every sort of weapon. Think about it like this, how the hell did people learn to use 11ft long glaives and 16ft long pikes? Theres obviously a massive learning curve and physical prerequisites you need to meet before even attempting to wield such weapons because of how unruly each of them are in their own respects. We’re also not talking about just a regular sword, we’re talking hypotheticals about a massive hunk of raw iron and potential ways to use it in battle. Modern humans don’t train all their lives in blade combat anymore and so all we can do is speculate how to use it if someone were even able to use it.
@abarainosa
@abarainosa 6 ай бұрын
@@jancarlosnatano885 Except that is still not what a step back jab is for. A jab in most uses is to judge distance and set up follow ups. It is a useful tool because it is low energy and low committal and it easily retrieved. Hence why I used the example of a thrust. Unless you are outrageously strong, there is only one direction that sword is going in once it begins moving down That is farther down, unless you use all of your body to stop its momentum and redirect it. In fact if you watch correctly. He's not swinging it down. He's stepping out of the way, letting it fall and pushing it down once it's past a certain point. He's not stepping back to create distance. He's stepping back because he's letting the weight crash down. He is moving around the weapon, instead of making it move around him. To your point about glaives and pikes, both had long shafts to grab them so you could better distribute the weight. Furthermore, a large sword like this with a much longer handle would probably be more useful and resemble that of the Zanbato from Rurouni Kenshin.

Heres the thing.... Hand to hand is different than having another sword, maul, mace etc. Most people would have no problem getting inside a weapon that large, as long as you remember to keep pressing and do not give him distance. However, in a conventional fight, this weappon is terrifying. Pike/spear will give you the same reach, but he can spike the point of that sword towards the ground and deflect any jabs (that blade width is insane)...and possibly break said weapon. Mid-high difficulty Short sword/mace/maul again, reach. Now you have to give yourself enough distance to swing effectively, which is roughly the same as the width of the blade. High difficulty. Something like a Zwiehander may just about balance the equation, mid difficulty. Personally, id take a hand a half sword, go defensive and look for a way to force him to use overhand swings. Match his reach and give him a double edge to worry about. Over the top is the easiest way to counter something this large. Even then, its not a huge advantage. He keeps that blade low and the handle high, its not gonna be a fun fight. And im sure thats something hes well aware of. There are so many ways you can use something other than the point of that weapon to inflict some serious damage. So what if it swings a bit slower? He turns that thing sideways while you rush him at the wrong moment and youll split your own skull open🤷🏼‍♂️

The problem with big heavy weapons is that every move you make is choreographed. I can see how you're going to swing, if you can, and make moves to get around it. It can be intimidating but even someone who can swing it well will still have to wind up for most things.

Did you ever watch Berserk?? Guts trained for years with a much smaller sword. Slowly reshaping the sword the stronger he became. Making the sword larger and larger until it became the sword you are holding now. Then he used it to kill over 1000 soldiers by himself. :)

for him to be lifting it that easily (he has to have some good gains because of leverage forces but besides that) that sword likely weighs nowhere near what you think it weighs, swords have been fine tuned for hundreds of years to be as light and strong as possible, combine that with modern alloys and smithing techniques and ye, a big ass sword like that can be made a reasonable weight as long as its balanced correctly. also soldiers did not initiate combat immediately after arriving to an area, even with much smaller lighter weapons theyd be too exhausted, that is why they would have camps a mile or so away from the area a battle was planned to take place to recuperate that spent energy. people in the past werent idiots, they knew a tired soldier is a dead soldier
