TheRinzl2r I discussed this a little on /civ4xg/ and came to appreciate the role the priest plays in that scene. If anyone else had touched the glass one might have assumed they knew the cosmonaut on the other side. A priest is one of the few people you would assume doesn't personally know the cosmonaut yet might expect to see at the launch site. Two people who don't know one another sharing such an intimate moment in this context is admittedly powerful.

For blessings and Good luck, and not to be a douche to him; and it's the symbol of Russia somewhat, kinda a thing with all Baltic states. I'm somewhere on the Atheist/ Agnostic side of the religious spectrum but I teared up a bit the first time I saw the Orthodox Priest scene and I think I can actually articulate why after some thought. If you think about the actual context here, you have humans on a mission that could go catastrophically wrong. Maybe the crew doesn't even know where they're going, or if there's anywhere habitable out there, as they seem to be leaving without a choice. They could have malfunctions or run out of resources or get die of radiation, etc. etc. etc. As I said, anything could go wrong. And yet, remaining on earth, here's this Orthodox Priest. In my eyes he's someone that probably doesn't have any understanding of the complexities of space travel (maybe a bias thing but it's my narrative). He probably doesn't know anyone on the crew, but he understands the danger and the wonder and just the incredible, vast emptiness and unsureity of the cosmos. For humans he's probably never met before, he is willing to call on what he believes is the supreme guardian of all humankind to ensure that their journey will be watched over and guided from danger, as the rest of humanity will have stem from their success. And as someone who doesn't have a ton of faith, in my eyes that manifests as a man reaching into his own wonderful, vast, unsure cosmos. Just like the mission, there's no guarantee for his prayers to land anywhere, but he continues to hope and pray into the greater universe anyway so that humanity has a better chance of surviving. I would argue that this scene encapsulates the overall existence and history of all humankind in the big picture of things: Being lost, scared, and unsure of what comes next, and yet still able to pull hope and faith out of the vacuum of the cosmos.

I, for one, am more cynical. How long until we take our wars to our new homes? How long until we unleash weapons of mass destructions on a new earth? How long before we soak this "Terra Nova" red with blood?

I really really hope that it will be not just "reskinned" Civilisation 5, but a complete rework with all those excellent abilities and unique gameplay, as it was in Alpha Centauri: Alien Crossfire, it was a Great Game.

PressHereToSeeMyTits It will be a "reskinned" Civilization 5, given that it uses the same engine. Whether that is good or bad remains to be seen.

As soon as those plates slid open, everyone in the ship in front of it was treated to a high amount of radiation. Fallout's qoute: "War. War never changes." fits here pretty well. You'd think that they would avoid the conflict that plagued earth, but you can bet it'll all start over again on the new world.

Daniel Carkner Yeah of course. Making the main figure of the intro a young Mulismah was a fantastic idea. Interpreting her as a connection to Malala is only one reading. :)

Laurie Stevens I agree. It has to be some kind of first for videogames to even mention a female Muslim character, so respect to Firaxis games!

Yessir432 It gets better: one of the leaders, Kavitha Thakur, runs India and maybe Pakistan, who combined into a Protectorate and might have fused religions. So, she might be half-Hindi, half Mulismah, in terms of faith.

That is exactly the boat I am in. I just can't play Civilization responsibly. If they had an option to ban yourself from playing a Beyond Earth for a designated period of time like a few weeks or months then I would buy this in a second. As it stands now I can't buy it because I know I would abuse it.

I don't see the problem with including the scene with the priest blessing the ship. Just like the daughter takes one last appreciative glance back at her father before being seperated, it is representative of the colonists taking one last moment to say good-bye to Terran history. But no, the fedora-weilding neckbeard fucktards must plague the world with thier endless snark.

I REALLY hope this one gets a sequel. And one that really pushes the grimdark reality that this apocalypse science fiction story could enable. Yes civilization pushed a cartoon, all ages theme, however people love to explore what humanity could be like, and escaping apocalypse is always a popular one.

@@ST0AT nope, if you played the game, you'd know that the name you're looking for is Slavic Federation (which-according to the wiki entry, isn't even entirely Slavic, but consists most of Eastern Europe. Maybe what you're seeing there is a Greek priest blessing a Romanian astronaut before the takeoff from a Hungarian launching station)
