One thing everyone needs to keep in mind is its only been 2 1/2 years since the a9 came out. Is it disappointing there wasn't a spec bump in the sensor, maybe a little but...this is a mid-cycle refresh that got better than a typical mid-cycle refresh. I say that because when you look at Nikon and their S models, they don't update very much, maybe a processor with a slight ISO bump of a stop. Major Flagship cameras from Nikon and Canon come out roughly every 4 years with a middle of the road refresh on Nikon's side. It's the every 4 years we've been seeing major refreshes from Canon on the 1D X line. So for Sony which hit a tripple with the a9, they are not half way between third and home with the a9 II. It's still lightyears ahead of Nikon and Canon and my expectations for two years down the road are much higher. I LOVE the new body over the old body. I like the 10 FPS mechanical shutter option. I hate the lack of touch functions, I am not happy about the 3.1 million dot evf vs higher. But all in all, they took something that was game changing and updated it with a fresh look and new processor.

For a wildlife photographer like me the improved weather sealing, AF, bigger buttons (think using with gloves on), etc. makes this a nice upgrade to a stellar camera. Now that Sony has the 600 f/4, Sony's is a very compelling system when compared to Nikon and Canon and I shot Canon for 30 years. If you don't think the improvements to this version of the a9 are significant than you don't need them. Me, I need them.

So the Canon 1DXmark 2 could do 4k60 DCI, has full touchscreen, shoots 14fps(with af) 14bit uncompressed raw (the A9 only shoots 20fps with 12bit raws. in uncompressed 14bit raws it shoots in 12fps)... canon did that over 4 year ago and you are telling me they are far behind sony? because of eye AF? as i see it, the A9 II is one of the laziest upgrades ever. if canon would have done that, everybody would shit on the camera.

a9 mkII seems cool but meh 🤷🏻‍♂️ pretty much geared for photographers that work for news outlets. They basically created the a9 Olympic edition. Shoot then share wirelessly quickly or through gigabit lan connection. Otherwise it’s pretty much the a9 in the a7r IV body.

With minimal effort Sony brings an update of the A9 on the market knowing that even the current A9 is lightyears ahead of what CANIKON can offer. You can change from AF-C to AF-S without using the dial by using a custom recall button and enable "af on" in the custom recall settings. About the A9ii, well it's clearly designed for pros (news, sports) who need fast connectivity, those people didn't ask for more megapixels so we're not getting them ... having the A9, I'll wait for the A9iii in 2 years.

You go in on Nikon and Canon and I was really expecting you to give them hell. I get that it’s just as impressive as the first A9 with a better grip. They did give small improvements but they could have pushed it a little further. Instead of the stacked c-mos sensor they could have put in the backlit sensors that are better in low light. They could have pushed it to 4K 60 and they didn’t put log in it. Don’t go soft on us J, we all know it’s not worth the upgrade. A9 shooters should stay with the original and just upgrade the firmware.

I've had the A9 II on loan from Sony since October 13 and had been using it regularly on all of my photo wire service assignments in addition to the regular A9 (that I personally own). I used the A9 II to cover the Rugby World Cup matches here in Japan, fashion week runway shows, MotoGP, celebrity movie premiere event with Will Smith and recent news of the Japan Emperor's enthronement. I could say the camera does feel better in the hands and appreciate the 10FPS on the mechanical shutter. The new features such as the voice memo and improved Internet connectivity are also definitely nice to have in my line of photography work. The AF system does seem a bit improved but not really a huge difference to me compared with the A9. I'd say if you're not in photojournalism/sports full-time, then save your money as this camera would be overkill and would recommend the original A9, A7 III or even A7R III. Personally I'm still on the fence whether to get the A9 II because I get by just fine with my A9 and A7R III setup. While those new features on the A9 II are definitely nice little additions to have I'm just not sure if it's worth the current price tag...probably not.

@MotivationFix Respectfully, truly, but what you wrote has not one bit of relevancy to photographers like me who for years with DSLRs have had to hurriedly focus/recompose/focus/recompose on moving subjects in news and sports, and then demo’ed an A7III and/or A9 and watched the face-AF or eye-AF dance all over the screen tracking subjects no matter where they go. To me, that kind of innovation and execution is what matters most and it seems to matter most to the other companies, too, since they are trying to play catch-up. I certainly understand what you wrote but I’ll readily forgive those practices while I enjoy the eye-AF every day. I need it. I shoot news, sports, events and features. To be realistic, that would not be smart for Sony, you are thinking like someone who has already switched to Sony, but Sony is thinking about all the pro sports photographers that shoot Canon and Nikon, and they want to get them to switch to Sony. and these new improvements like the ergonomics and better weather sealing is going to have allot of Canon and Nikon shooters switching, so this new camera wasn't designed to make A9 owners upgrade, it was made to get more pro photographers over to Sony. and the A9ll will achieve that goal.

It's not about shitting on the a9II, it's about Sony way of doing business that bug people. Don't be naive, you think Sony cares about people who didn't have the a9? Let be real, 99% of the photographer population don't need nor want the A9, let alone the A9II. It's the least used camera ever, Sony is upgraded it just to be in time for the Olympic. Since Canon and Nikon have been the kings of sport photography for such a long time, Sony wants to have that cake, too. If they actually care about it's customer as you said, they would have release the A7SIII already, it's the only thing people ask for to comple the A7/7R/7S III trilogy. Not the a6600 not the A7/A7RIV not the A9II. I know each people have different needs but when 80% of customers have the same need and have been asking for just one camera the last two years, then they go on ignoring those mofos and priozitized the Olympic instead of their consumers, you know Sony is bad company and the whole Alpha department is maybe on constant holidays.

I dont get it how people get so happy about sony releasing camera "patches" faster than the others. First you pay top dollar for a camera that in a very short period of time is "obsolete" according to Sony. This has 2 problems., First as a professional you will have a devaluation of the gear you bought sooner, and you wont have as much time to get the value for money you paid. Its basic resources management. You you change cameras every 2 years instead of 4, you are spending 2x more money. Now, now one is forcing you to change, but thats what sony wants you to do. Second, older models will stop to receive FW updates sooner. They still sell the a6000 and that camera has been obsolete for the past 3 years at least. anyway...

Moving AF points while shooting is something i've wanted for quite a while, I like to use my thumb on the screen to track people's face during wedding receptions(because zone/area AF often switches focus to other faces) with my A7iii and everything up to the A9ii you would have to take one photo at a time, or a short burst, take your finger off the shutter, wait for the manual AF box to go orange again, move it, and take a few more pictures, i dont really like taking a burst of 10 and wait a long time, i'd rather take 1 or 2 pictures with only a few MS between shots/recompose

Jared Polin. You made a good point about the whingers and whiners who will never purchase the A9II in the first place - but they can't help themselves. Having just part exchanged my A9 and A7III for an A7RIV I was squirming a bit when I saw that Sony had announced the A9II. Would I have swapped my A9 for anA9II? Doubt it becuse I am not a pro sports photographer. But if I were, I would go for it. I am now down to a single camera body for the first time in 30 years. If I go back to owning two during the next 12 months, I reckon I will purchase a second A7RIV.

pete draper why did you buy the a9 at the first place?
@klackon1
@klackon1 5 жыл бұрын
@@dimitristsagdis7340. Because I already had an A7III and wanted something with faster more accurate AF at the time. When Sony released the A7RIV with 61MP and AF almost as good as the A9 it made for the almost perfect camera for me. The 26MP APS-C mode is also a great boon. Though the A9 is a brilliant camera, as is the A7III, they have their limitations when having to crop, which I do quite often. It seemed wise to sell my A9 prior to the release of the A9II, especially in the light of the drop in price to possibly $3000/£3000. I normally use two cameras in tandem, with one set up for macro and one set up for other wildlife. I've already captured birds and dragonflies in flight with my A7RIV; so if I go back to owning two cameras I will purchase a second A7RIV, as it is more suitable for my requirements. Hope this answers your query.

The reason for why being able to move the focus area during shooting is a good thing is that when you are shooting sports with a group of people for example and the composition suddenly changes you can adopt to that without stop shooting. This takes a lot of practice to do on the fly, but when you have learned it it is a really handy thing…

Nice, well-reasoned review by someone with the sports creds to be taken seriously. On the issue of that (for my uses stupid) dial on the top left, you can override more of it than you might think. Jared and other sports and wildlife photographers should carefully study Mark Smith's free video on how to configure the A9 for wildlife. I don't want to generate hearsay, but Mark did find how to override some of those gotchas. I believe it involves the three special configurations that you can attach to buttons. There are configuration settings that you can't access through the menu. Yeah, it's a hack to get around a stupid software limitation but it does work.

Hi Jared. Great video. I have a question and I would like to know your opinion please. The sony a9 II all claim to be ideal for wildlife photography, but it only has 24MP, in wildlife photography you often have to shoot away from the animals and you need to crop the image. With the A9 II, do you want before or after cropping do you still have high image quality? the difference in image quality is significant between the A7R III and A9 II, for wildlife photography, low light, away from the subject, etc. Thanks a lot. I actually like the second dial a lot. I prefer-and miss-it compared to the more clumsy software version I have to use on my A73. If your camera is on a tripod it's easy to shift focusing modes as well as shooting mode with your left hand. If you have a hardware button, it doesn't make sense to have a software toggle, but I agree, if you could put it in a custom mode, and want to use the software options, that should be available.

To my understanding, Sony may have thought A9 excellent enough beyond the competitors' capacity, but Sony released A9ii maybe because of two reasons: 1) Sony just wanted to make A9's body ergonomic with new designed body, 2) Sony just added a number of features to make A9 more solid, resulting in A9ii. So, customers decide if they need a9 or a9ii.

The connectivity improvements are great and spot on, FTP will now not be a problem at all. The anti-flicker handling is also important and THANK YOU for being able to change colour of the focus brackets!!!. With the originally a9 the colleagues with Canon and Nikon thought this camera is “cheating” but they did not want to move over to a9 due to the things I mentioned above… Now there is absolutely no reason to not move over to Sony if you can afford it…

The reason why it does not use CFexpress cards, is pretty easy: they are much larger in all dimensions. Also note that just because lets say a Z7 will support CFexpress at some time, does not mean it can utilize the full speed of it. Because bus transfer is also something that is not easy to increase, plus the CPU power to actually provide the speed, etc. All that taking into consideration that it should not overheat. So don't get too overhyped with CFexpress support in -for example- some of the Nikon cameras ;)...

Everyone new that the A9ll was going to have the new body and buttons of the a7r lV. so the release of the A9ll has no wow factor. that is why there was no press release for this camera, personally I was hoping for a new sensor with a small jump in MP, and I was hoping to hear that there was some kind of focusing break through that took the A9 to an even more insane level. just to totally kick Nikon and Canons asses even further. but the A9 is already the best focusing camera on the planet. and already a great camera, and if you ad up all the improvements it is now a better camera. ( two fast card slots / 10fps mechanical shutter / better ergonomics and weather sealing / and the new connectivity ) but I think only a small percent of A9 users will upgrade, but allot of people thinking of switching to Sony will by this new camera. witch is exactly why Sony wanted this camera out. they want to further steal away that pro sports market from Nikon and Canon, but for me I will stick with my A7r lll for another year or two until the A7r 5 or A9lll comes out, but I am also curious to see what the A7s lll is going to offer, hopefully it has allot more wow factor.
