The Righteous Brothers were a duo. They sang most songs together, bringing an incredibly beautiful harmony and bringing into the world the phenomenon of Blue Eyed Soul. They each did some solo tracks, too. This one is all Bobby Hatfield. No auto tune. No computer tricks. He was one of the finest examples of a contra tenor, the rarest of all singing voices, and when he sang this song, he owned in, making here what is recognized as one of the top 10-I would argue top 5-solo live performances of all time. Bobby Hatfield, the greatest singer ever. You're right, he never had to try, Bobby was a counter-tenor, a natural high-register, from baritone to a G5 or higher. NOT falsetto! He and Bill Medley formed the greatest duo in history. Bobby passed away in 2003 at the age of 63, eight months after their induction into the RnR hall of fame. He is so missed. There is so much to discover. There were amazing as soloists, and as a duo. Blue eyed soul for sure. Bill Medley is still singing, touring the country at the age of 81.

Yes, The Righteous Brothers were a duet - Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley. Unchained Melody is simply Bobby by himself on this one. They were considered blue-eyed soul back in the day when no one cared the color of a person's skin. We were there for the great music and all kinds of it. I was 11 years old when Unchained Melody was a hit. The new found appreciation for music and raw talent from back then is pretty cool.

My generation had the greatest music. The Righteous Brothers were great. Sadly, Bobby Hatfield (seen here) passed in 2003. Bill Medley is still entertaining at the age of 81. You need to listen to Ebb Tide and You'll Never Walk Alone. They each sang solos during their performances. This was and will forever be Bobby's. They were called blue-eyed soul.

Bobby was looking so calm. But he was actually very nervous because the lady in the background in the blue dress was his mom. So he was singing for his momma. He also had been fighting a cold. That man performed those vocal gymnastics while both nervous and sick. The group played a lot of shows for soul audiences where when they were seen the audience was like, "no way, man." then they would start singing and everyone had a good time. At one show for some military and heard a call out, "That was righteous Brothers." And that was where they got their name. Check out all the vids you can find of them. I fell into the Righteous Brothers rabbit hole over a year ago on youtube. and I have not wanted to climb out of it. When Bill (the tall deep voices one not in this video) sings you can hear that one of his favorite singers that had a lot of musical influence on him was Ray Charles. They do some real good covers of Ray's songs. A lot of great ones are their performances on the show "Shindig." Check those out, all you can get your eyes on. I don't think you would be the least bit disappointed in them. Wonderful performances by then and the other entertainers showcasing such a great amount of talent. Music is music and their talent crossed the musical genres that were like a wall to so many singers back in the day where performers were pigeonholed as pop, rockabilly, country, blues, soul, or rock and roll. So many could not cross over from one to the other. These guys used their voices and LEAPED out of those pigeonholes. No autotune, pure unadulterated TALENT.

It is focused for a lover he has not seen in a “long, lonely time”. The song was nominated for an Oscar in 1955 for Best Song Award, but was won by “ Love Is A Many Splendored Thing”. This, from Wikipedia. So, yes, the song WAS about a man in prison, longing for his lover on the outside.

This is a song from the 1950's prison movie called ..."Unchained". He's just a prisoner wondering if his girl will wait for him. This cover of that song was done in 1965 so, he's just emoting, putting himself into the song. Bobby Hatfield was a "counter tenor" so he can get really high. The Righteous Brothers consisted of Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield (not blood brothers) who began singing together in 1962. The original song "Unchained Melody" originated from a movie "Unchained" that was created in the 1950's. It was first performed with guitar from a cell mate asking his girl if she would or not be there when it was released. In 1955 there were actually three different versions of this song on the charts. Lex Baxter and His Orchestra, Roy Hibbler and Ray Hamilton (his son remade it later). Fast Forward - this song the version we are watching is from The Andy Williams Show in 1965. The song and the sound, if you will, is the product of Phil Spector and what he calls the "Walls of Sound" appropriately named. As we approach Tina Turner to and Spector's song Mountain High from 1966. The song Unchained Melody was actually the "B" the record. The record 10 years later from 1955 and even earlier from a movie. I believe this song is unforgettable, especially when GHOST the movie came onboard in 1990. That is a lot of time for a song to travel.

A Black inmate longs for his love (I hunger for your touch), fears she’s moved on (Are you still mine?), begs for her to ‘wait for me, wait for me’. The inmate sings the song (with a lot less yodeling) as a cellmate accompanies him on a broken guitar. The song was nominated for an Academy Award (one of 15 for North) and reprised many times. Hundreds of singers picked it up, but none made it into the classic we know as Bobby Hatfield. It appeared on a Righteous Brothers album in 1965, but that version doesn’t have Bobby’s stratospheric cadenza at the end. It’s that studio album’s version that was used in the 1990 movie Ghost (the clay potter scene). Unchained Melody was so popular that in 1965 four different versions were on the charts. Bobby’s was the most acclaimed. The duo was invited to the Andy Williams show, in which they performed in duet. Then Bobby sang this solo, complete with countertenor flights at the end. Spectacular as these top notes sound, it’s his low notes with their perfect chest resonance (‘wait for me, wait for me’ and ‘God speed your love’) that make the tummy wobble.

Bobby Hatfield is in the rock & roll hall of fame. He was 22yrs old in this performance in 1965 on the Andy Williams TV show. The song was written years before this performance as a prison song. It is one of the greatest love songs ever written and was used in the movie "GHOST".

There are two in the group however this was a solo effort only Bobby singing. Listen to You've Lost That Loving Feeling were Bill is the main Vocalist. All time classic.

The late great Bobby Hatfield who was half of the Righteous Brothers (they were not really related at all). The other half is Bill Melody who was still living the last time I checked and was performing not long ago. Bobby and Bill did perform solo’s and duets as the Righteousness Brothers.

There were 2 guys...Bobby Hatfield just happened to do this song solo. This was a live t.v. performance, and he was very nervous because he was just told his mother was there in the audience. He performed flawlessly, which is why he bit his lip in relief at the end of the song. The Righteous Brothers weren't related. They were doing a show when they first started, and someone in the crowd shouted, "That's righteous, brother!"...so they named themselves The Righteous Brothers. They actually say that in the original video this clip is taken from. His singing partner was Bill Medley. Check out You've Lost That Loving Feeling to experience them singing together.

Thanks for this! Yep - this is Bobby Hatfield - one "half" of the Righteous Brothers ... they did some great harmonies/songs.... they had some famous duets.. (Bill Medley was the other "brother") but in this particular song, it was all Bobby - what you noticed is what I love about his vocals - seems effortless -- no screaming or straining.. just perfect ... I must also note that this being LIVE - Bobby was nervous b/c his MOM was in the audience.. nevertheless, I'm quite sure she was proud.. lol

This song was from a prison movie out in the 50's, but for us living through the Vietnam War this was OUR song for our guys in the service. Danced many a dance at sock hops in high school. Still has it's magic 56 yrs later. Good never goes out of style. Love to see you young people's faces when listening to MY YESTERYEAR music. Listen to You've lost that loving feeling " love to see your face on that one.
