He didn't make the game any more popular than Gatorade or Snickers has. His shoes were only successful because #23 chose to wear them, probably because Nike offered more money than Converse or anyone else did. He's a businessman, not a legend of the game. This was a very corporate move and it waters down the whole thing.

popular as it is now plus the NBA wouldn't be as popular without him places like China, Africa, and just recently the NBA is becoming very popular in India.
