JG9, I'm going to defend this decision. It was the 1st possession of overtime, so a field goal doesn't end it. Second, it was around freezing with a wind chill of 27°F. The ball doesn't fly that well under those conditions. Third, even if Brett Maher makes the field goal, the defense couldn't stop A-Rod in the 4th quarter to save their own lives, and Christian Watson might have wound up with 4 touchdowns.

@Tylor Why? Right now, McCarthy is 18-8 over past 2 seasons. Did you see complaints being non-existent when Cooper Rush was QB? It's not McCarthy's fault Dak can't make a play in this game and 49ers Playoff game when Dak needed to most.
@tylorkenniston11922 жыл бұрын
@@TheRealfan1 true, McCarthy has a good record so far, but is that due to his coaching or in spite of it? Welcome to dumb decisions 2 times in a single season. Not great. 3rd in the division at this point in the season? Not ideal. The team has loads of talent but whether it’s McCarthy, Dak, or both someone seems to not be delivering when it matters most. Cooper rush as qb didn’t get any complaints because they went back to what they do best: run the ball, play tough defense. But when dak is back on the field it’s “we have a great qb let’s have him throw 50 times a game for no reason” which leads to shorter offensive drives, a tired D late in the game, and a 4th down passing call that makes 0 sense on field goal range in OT. I hope I’m wrong and maybe it was was just trusting his qb too much, but I think McCarthy is the last person you want in charge of the team when it’s a tight game and you need to do things like manage a clock, challenge bad referee decisions, and realize when to hold and when to fold. He would make a great co-ordinator or number 2, but as head coach he’s not my pick. Still though, Miles ahead of Garrett. That man strives for mediocrity 😂

The Philly decision was even worse than described because leading up to the Lamb catch on 3rd, there was back to back 3 and outs, a 1st play pick on the last drive, and 1st and 2nd went absolutely nowhere on that drive. Your offense is as cold as possible, yet run to the line no doubt. Not the time to go quick, field position and down aside.

McCarthy was bashed for his lack of foresight when his Packers lost to the Seahawks in the 2014 NFC Championship Game. On more than one occasion he ran on third and short, then kicked the field goal rather than go for it.

When I saw the offense still on the field, I was wondering what the blue hell McCarthy was thinking about. Then again, 4th down shouldn't have even come up because the Packers appeared to commit pass interference on 3rd down.
@gordonwhitney60522 жыл бұрын
After some reflection, it occurred to me that much of the logic presented here about lack of foresight can also be applied to the November 2009 Patriots Colts 4th and 2 game. In that game, Brady lined up in shotgun and threw an incompletion the play before the 4th and 2 play. Was that a lack of foresight on the play caller’s part? The Pats needed two yards on two plays. I’ll concede the Pats ground game had struggled in the 4th quarter of that game, but how is two measly yards on two plays such a big ask? Given that Brady was superb at converting QB sneaks in his Patriots days, you could even argue they only needed one yard on third down from a running back. I would love to hear JaguarGator9’s thoughts on what the Patriots were doing on that 3rd down play in 2009

Devil's advocate: Maher's kickoffs to that end of the field never made it to the end zone all day due to the conditions, so a long kick in that direction was no gimme. I’ve got a theory as to why we’re seeing a lot of Dumb Decisions (TM) on 4th Down this year. The decision to go for it has been taken out of the hands of the coaches because of analytics. So coaches are compensating by putting their own stamp on the play call. As a result, as you said about Frank Reich last week, they’re getting too cute.

2017 Eagles started it all with going for it on 4th down. After seeing how successful Eagles were with 4th down that year, teams decided to follow suit. I'm going to defend Mike McCarthy on this one, let's say they settle for the field goal in OT and they miss, they would be in the exact same situation as they would be as if they failed to convert on 4th down & 4. If they made the kick, Dallas would have gotten 3 points yes, but you're still giving the ball to Aaron Rodgers and his offense, who had a TON of momentum going into OT, and McCarthy knows giving the ball back to Rodgers is not a good idea and why wouldn't he?
