Season-ending injuries aren't supposed to happen during pregame warmups. Nothing bad is supposed to happen during a pregame warmup. Well, during week 11 of the 1980 NFL season, in a must-win game for the Kansas City Chiefs against the San Diego Chargers, they lost their starting right tackle, Charlie Getty, and their #3 wide receiver, Stan Rome, for the season in the pregame warmup

As an avid watcher of sports blooper tapes in the ‘80s and ‘90s, he provided me with many laughs during that period with his comments on the field and in press conferences.

It’s easy to forget that before the last decade, the Chiefs were one of the most snakebitten franchises in NFL history

@@matthewdaley746 especially with the way the team is constructed. They should have lost this last one, but the Niners let them hang around a bit too much. They’re gonna have a hard time maintaining relevancy with Mahomes’ cap hit, especially once Chris Jones leaves

Nice to see Joe Delaney in the background. Delaney deserves much more of a legacy then the NFL/media has provided

During the CFL's American expansion era, Baltimore receiver Byron Williams snapped his achilles tendon in the pre-game warmup prior to the team's 1994 season opener in Toronto, and was lost for the season. He came back briefly in 1995, but caught just 2 passes in what turned out to be his last season.

Some background about the Chiefs facemasks then: They were made by a company that was started by a dentist named Fred Dunning - Dungard. They were unique in which they used bar-shaped pieces of aluminum as opposed to tube-shaped steel; the Chiefs equipment manager then, Bobby Yarborough, met Fred in the late at a trade show, and Mr. Yarborough favored them; it wasn't until 1983 that the team stopped using them - Yarborough's replacement, John Phillips noticed that because of the Dungard masks were directly bolted on the top attachment points, it made them largely unable to absorb shock transferring it instead to the player's neck. Dungard went kaput in the late 1970s. And yes, they are funky looking. :D

A very similar thing happened to maybe the most promising college quarterback, and I believe it was in 1980. Mark Herman, an obscure name now, but the all-time leading passer in college football history was all set to lead Purdue, aka Quarterback U, to a nationally televised battle against Notre Dame. ABC and the whole nation were passionately anticipating this intrastate game of two great programs. During pre-game warmups, Herman got his thumb accidently bent backward as he was backing up. For a horrible instant the thumb got tangled a teammate's helmet being held by that teammate at his side. Unable to grip the football, Herman missed the game with his thumb and joint in agony, and minutes later ABC had to start the much awaited broadcast by letting down the viewers with the most bizarre explanation of an inexplicable fluke accident. I mean for the all-time leading passer thought to be about to follow in Greise, Dawson and Phipps' path to have this happen? Sadly, it was a metaphor for Mark Herman's whole career. He reshaped passing from his first game as a freshman by turning the shotgun into glory, but always had something go wrong in his biggest games, with the ND thumb fiasco being the worst. He was drafted by the Broncos in 4th round, and bounced around the NFL for a less than stellar 11-year NFL career. :(

The Chiefs weren't making the playoffs in such a stacked AFC, sure, but they sure could've made things interesting had Rome and Getty not collided. As for this game, I'm amazed that the Chargers didn't blow the Chiefs out given all the statistical disparities.

Ever consider a video on Chris Hanson, punter for the Jaguars. He nearly took his leg off wih ax after Jack Del Rio had an ax and a tree stump brought into the locker room. And that was after, he sent himself, his wife, and fellow Jaguars kicker to the hospital with 3rd degree burns. because of they were making fondue and it spilled on to the floor. Nearly burned their house down if I recall. Can't make this stuff up sometimes.
