I don't even know what to say at this point.
Mike McCarthy is absolutely terrible at in-game management, and has been throughout his tenure as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. But the ending to the 2022 divisional round of the NFL playoffs against the San Francisco 49ers might be his worst move yet.

I actually laughed when Kyle called the timeout. I thought they were going to line up in a normal formation after and go for the hail mary, like complete psyche-out. I'd have respected that. Line up in a bizarre formation, 49ers call a time out because wtf, then after they try to figure it out dial up something normal. It probably also would have failed, but w/e, you take the shot.

@@anthonymendez1997 I mean, the Colts were trying to either catch the Pats with 12 men on the field by faking a substitution. Dunno if you've watched Pat MacAfee's explanation, but basically, Griff Whalen (who wasn't the regular player for this) wasn't supposed to snap the ball unless Colt Anderson saw an opening and lined up behind him. Anderson and the special teams coach did a last second audible so Colt lined up to do a hard count. Whalen snapped the ball like he was told, even though that wasn't the plan. This play was just terrible.

McCarthy’s hubris to run that final play after the timeout is amazing. If you’re wondering where the “ladder” was on that hook and ladder play he was playing center and got pancaked. The coach assumed that the 49ers defense would be so confused that no one would rush the passer. I sat in my living room hoping the niners wouldn’t sit back and let the play develop because I knew the result would be glorious. The only thing that would’ve made it sweeter would’ve been after the reception the ball would’ve gotten jarred loose and a niners defender waltzed into the end zone.

I think the ladder was supposed to be #16 at the bottom of the screen. Dak threw it high so Turpin had no chance to lateral, but I think what was supposed to happen is Turpin laterals to #16 and then #16 throws ot back to Zeke, who is supposed to be behind the convoy of blockers on the far side of the field after "blocking" for Dak.
@GR-bn3xj
@GR-bn3xj 2 жыл бұрын
@@cmd31220 let's be real, any normal play has hardly any chance of scoring. I don't fault him for thinking outside the box and trying something different to give them a chance. Just needed a couple of lineman to give the play a chance. It's an intriguing idea to have so many speed players on the field, the execution was just not there bc they assumed no one would rush. With a tweek, they could have made it interesting.

2 issues with the last play. 1. I think the lateral was supposed to go to Zeke. If that's right, McCarthy was thinking the 49ers wouldn't rush anyone. The problem there is, as you mentioned, the Niners took time out before. Zeke at center wasn't gonna catch him off guard. So, they just sent one guy to take him out of the play. 2. I actually think McCarthy was close to a decent idea. Or, at least an intriguing one. I've always thought that on these plays, you shouldn't have more than one lineman (with that one lineman being the center) on the field. Get your fastest WRs, RBs, DBs and maybe another QB out there. As long as they report as ineligible and line up correctly, it's legal. The problem? He still had linemen on the field. They were just in their normal spot. So, the same issue was there. If you get into a lateral situation, you still have guys out there that can't do much if they happen to get the ball.
@KevinT7274
@KevinT7274 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you need speed on the field and a player other than the QB with a good arm, I've seen a kickoff gadget play where the return man would run up one sideline then throw the ball over to the other sideline where another return man would be waiting with a couple blockers. You're hoping the defense will pursue the ball hard, leaving their lanes which will give the play a chance of working. I could see trying something similar to that.
@GR-bn3xj
@GR-bn3xj 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not as mad about this play as others. The odds of anything normal working are almost zero. He got speed on the field and tried for something different. It's not like had he had 5 lineman protecting him and they launch a hail Mary that it had much a shot. No one can throw the ball that far. Outside of LSU vs Kentucky, I can't think of a hail Mary from that far. So he puts everything in the lateral play, but went just a bit too extreme. You have to be able to catch it and give the guy a chance to run or lateral.

As far as clock management goes, both coaches had awful moments - San Fran wasted a lot of time in the beginning of the final drive of the first half limiting their options to just getting the field goal before halftime instead of going for 7 which they could have easily gotten. Honestly if the Cowboys won, we would be talking about that dumb decision but between terrible throws from Dak and poor coaching from Mike, yeah 49ers won. That said, I don't put much faith in 49ers clock management skills either. There were many poor plays from both offenses and missed takeaways by both defenses. However, the best or wildest and most exciting football seemed to be on special teams!
@corybarrett2394

Shanahan's reasoning was that he did not want to leave Dallas with any time on the clock if San Francisco failed to convert on third down (couple this with the fact that Dallas got the ball to start the second half). It's difficult to say that the Niners could have easily scored a touchdown when they had been kept out of the endzone up to that point. One can criticize it as too conservative but it was intentional.

That was worse because even if the Cowboys got the ball spiked, they had one play from the 25. Still not great odds. I'd rather have 2 chances from 40 yards than 1 from 25. This one can be easily mocked but it was never gonna work anyway. The QB sneak last year was the equivalent of botching a surgery that's tough, but doable. This was the equivalent of botching a surgery on a patient that had no more than a week to live anyway.

Fair question... But what comes to mind is the 60 yard immaculate reception. And yes, Steelers did not draw it out that way, but (1) at least they gave themselves a chance (2) if Franco Harris had not been in position downfield, then he would not have been in position to make the catch. That is, if they had him do some sort of meaningless route, he would have been out of position to do something meaningful and (3) you have players who are aware of the game situation and not just sitting on their thumbs. This has to do more with coaching and prepping. Cowboys seem to have none of this.
