In 1980, I keep the points. In 2024, I take the penalty. When I reffed, I never assumed. I had one game where the defensive team declined a delay of game penalty against the offense for sportsmanship reasons.

As a referee myself, I can tell you personally that you CAN’T assume in a situation like this. You have to consult everyone involved. If you don’t and just make your own decision, you could not only cost the opposing team the game but could also kill the atmosphere of the contest for the fans as well.

Even in today's hyper aggressive NFL - its the first quarter, you're only down by one possession ... you take the points. at this point in the game, its not out of hand, and the momentum from lighting up the scoreboard is more important than a marginal attempt to tie it up. Especially with a weak QB. Especially when fighting not to go 0-4. Ask me when the situation is 20-24 in the fourth, you get a different answer, but thats not whats in question here.

I remember a similar thing in a 2007 Raiders @ Jaguars game where Jerome Boger accepted a penalty for the Raiders that they wanted declined. Of course that led to the Raiders getting a truckload of unsportsmanlike conduct flags and Warren Sapp getting ejected for bumping Boger

If the game was played at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, why are the Colts wearing white jerseys? I always seem to remember them wearing blue jerseys at home during their years in Baltimore. Especially during the Johnny Unitas years.

In the first quarter with the choice to stay 7-3 or the chance to try for 7-7, I'm taking the 7-3. Unless the penalty put us on the 1 yard-line with a fresh set of downs, I'm taking the 3 points. There's no other scenario in the first quarter down by one score where I take points off the board especially if I had 0 points prior.

Wyant was derelict in his duty. I hope the NFL dealt with him about his lies. As for whether or not I would've taken the points like Walt Michaels wanted to do, I would've done just that.
