The Bengals were supposed to play in primetime 3 times in 1982 as they had a MNF scheduled against the Browns in Cleveland on Sept 27 and the first ever visit to Riverfront by the Dallas Cowboys in a then rare Sunday Night game on October 24, both of these of course were wiped out by the strike. Dallas' first visit to Cincinnati would come 3 years later in the infamous 50-24 thrashing they took from the Bengals in a game you featured with the Bengals jumping out to a 22-0 lead eight minutes into the game.

9:47 There was actually a decent reason for that - Australian law required a six-month quarantine on imported horses, so it was easier to just hold the equestrian events somewhere else.
@ThreePointOneFou
@ThreePointOneFou Жыл бұрын
Nor would that be the last time that happened: The equestrian events for the 2008 Beijing Olympics were held 1000 miles away, in Hong Kong. In that case, it was for the horses' protection, as the air quality in Beijing wasn't conducive to the horses' health. As for the Tahiti thing, only surfing is scheduled to be held there. Everything else will be held in or near Paris.

The Surfing & Beach Volleyball events will be near LA for the 2028 Summer Olympics after Paris, 🇨🇵
@heartlandauthor
@heartlandauthor Жыл бұрын
@@ThreePointOneFou I wonder if NBC might have had something to do with Tahiti hosting the surfing events, as, depending on how they're scheduled, NBC might be able to air Olympic surfing live in a U.S. primetime time slot (if it wants to, NBC rarely airs events outside of track and field, swimming, gymnastics, and beach volleyball in primetime during the Summer Olympics). NBC isn't going to be able to air anything live in primetime from France, as the U.S. Eastern/Central primetime hours correspond with the early morning hours in France (there's zero chance the IOC schedules track and field and swimming events for 3 AM or so Paris time). Tahiti is as far behind U.S. Eastern Time (6 hours) as Paris is ahead of U.S. Eastern Time (6 hours), so a mid-afternoon start to the surfing events Tahiti time (if they're scheduled for that time of day) would correspond with U.S. Eastern/Central primetime.
@ThreePointOneFou
@ThreePointOneFou Жыл бұрын
@@heartlandauthor I suppose that's possible, given that several of France's overseas territories are closer to the U.S. than continental France itself, and given that this is the fourth Olympics in a row (with a fifth pending) where the time difference effectively precludes live coverage except for the night-owl set. However, surfing really isn't the kind of top-drawer sport that's going to persuade people to sign up for Peacock+ even if it is the Olympics (something that could just as easily be said for at least a half-dozen other sports on the 2024 program--breakdancing, anyone?). Rather, I think the main reason for having surfing in Tahiti is something rather more basic: needing somewhere where surfing is good enough for competition. I admit I don't know much about the sport in general, but I don't think that France's North Atlantic or Mediterranean coasts are the kinds of places surfers flock to in order to ride the curl. That's the problem with sports like surfing and sailing: you need to find places where you can hold the events properly, and you need Mother Nature itself to help out with that. At least Tahiti is in French-held territory, unlike the Melbourne/Stockholm problem.

Art Donavan wrote in his memoirs that his Colts played a pre-season game in Louisville in the late ‘50s on a field where a circus had just been held. Elephant crap was everywhere and offensive and defensive linemen made the most of the situation by flipping bits of it at each other while lined up for snaps. Maybe Coryell should have taken inspiration from that story and used the manure or straw or whatever as a weapon.

This isn't the only time that year that poor field conditions affected a game at Jack Murphy Stadium as 3 months earlier at Soccer Bowl 82 (the NASL's championship game) between the NY Cosmos & Seattle Sounders, the field was in absolutely terrible shape prior to kickoff. This was because the Padres had completed a three game series on Thursday (with the match taking place on Saturday) & the grounds crew thought they had enough time to prepare the field for soccer. However what the grounds crew wasn't aware of was that San Diego State football had a public practice on Friday morning (that was announced a month before hand) and completely wrecked the field because the San Diego State coaches painted football lines over the pre painted soccer lines. This was in addition to part of the baseball infield being in the soccer field. The NASL was absolutely livid with the grounds crew for letting the field be in such poor condition & had to delay the kickoff by 30 minutes so that the field could be somewhat presentable for a TV audience (the Soccer Bowl was being aired on the relatively new USA Network). Despite the poor field conditions, the game was quite competitive with the Cosmos winning 1-0 winning their fifth (and final) NASL championship.

I know I'm gonna hear more craziness from 1982 by the end of 2023! As for this game, the people running the Murph had to know that the Holiday Bowl between Ohio State and WAC champ BYU and this MNF game were taking place soon after that rodeo. What poor planning this was. It's almost as if the players would've almost been better off playing on artificial turf instead of that compromised natural turf they played on here.

The whole point was to have the biggest rodeo event of the year in a new market which would have expanded the growth of the sport. I am old enough to remember the early 80's and the popularity of rodeo growing after the release of Urban Cowboy in 1980. A successful event in a large venue like Jack Murphy Stadium would have been a massive triumph if pulled off successfully. And San Diego was an extremely RED part of CA back in the 80's with high presence of military and second generation Dust Bowl Okies making up the majority of the population. You also had Orange County (aka The Orange Curtain in the 1980s) with a similar conservative demo that could be pulled in for the event. I know it is hard to fathom a rodeo being popular enough to fill a football stadium in one of the bluest states in the country, but it was a different time back then. If you were to turn on ESPN back in the early 80s you were more likely to see a rodeo than any other sporting event.
@WaltGekko

He should do one on the final day of the 1981 season between the Denver Broncos and the Chicago Bears which had playoff implications because if the Broncos win they win the AFC West at 11-5 and the Chargers don't even make the playoffs at 10-6 because of a head to head tie breaker with the Bills who also finished 10-6 and beat the Chargers 28-27. We still would've probably still had the Freezer Bowl. The seeding would've been as follows 1. Cincinnati 2. Miami 3. Denver 4. NY Jets 5. Buffalo so we still would've had the Bengals vs. probably the Dolphins and no Epic in Miami.

Primary reason for scheduling rodeo comes down to money. This was a strike season, and folks who owned & operated Jack Murphy Stadium had to recoup losses from cancelled Chargers home games. As for timing? Well, Chicago Stadium booked three days of Led Zeppelin concerts while Blackhawks were in postseason in 1977. A brain on greed only results in logic-defying decisions.

Why would an outdoor stadium host a rodeo in the month of December? Wouldn’t it be freezing outside?

You obviously know nothing about San Diego weather. It was probably in the 70s or 80s.

@@chuckgan Having lived in San Diego once upon a time I can agree to this. Maybe not 70s or 80s in December, more like 50s but still way north of freezing. :p

@toddhawley2226 I thought about including 60s. My brother currently lives in San Diego and moved there for just that reason.

@@chuckgan It's a gorgeous city. I hope to attend a San Diego State game at their new stadium. An acquaintance of mine was at the Holiday Bowl where Texas played Arizona State. Gametime temp was 43 degrees, which is really cold for there!

Great video but the build up to the “punch line” was milked about 2-3 too many times and 6-8 too many minutes. Ok “THE DOO DOO BOWL” we get it 😁🤣 Ahhhh the early 80s Around this same time 10 yr old me was training in Boxing and my dad (RIP) explaining to me how going without water while working out in the heat “makes you tougher”. It was the times. Gatorade “technology” hadn’t yet reached remote Oklahoma apparently. Hahaha

The point was the field was in incredibly poor condition and shouldn't have been in that condition to begin with. You didn't watch all the way through because JG9 even said that the game, in the end, wasn't affected as broadly as it could've been.
