Paying cash for "everything" made sense when these guys spent over 300 days a year on the road, and they were never home when their credit card statements arrived. Back then, there were no online payments so the less you put on a credit card the better off you were.

Credit cards were also a fairly new thing in the 70s and spotty where you could use them into the 80s.

@@clarknapper3933 Yeah, some places were "brand loyal" so might only take Visa....and for all the remote places wrestling happened in, I'd imagine network connectivity and card processing (remember when theyd make a carbon of your card) would be rather sparse

Small town wrestling shows where a dad could take his family and have a great night of entertainment for about 20-30 bucks. Those were the days
@garymartling60554 жыл бұрын
No idea what it costs to go to a live wrestling event but baseball, football, basketball, etc have done everything they can to price their fans out of being able to go see them. And each year they(people in suits who don’t even actually care about sports and are just there for business purposes) try and figure out whyattendance and ratings decline.
@danielwilson97243 жыл бұрын
Whn I was growing up in mid 80s-early 90s in Indianapolis we got local wrestling shows for $5 every single time somehow.. Even whn Sabu,Abdullah the Butcher and Tracy Smothers were working the main events at a few of them.

@yoholmes2732 жыл бұрын
My local promotion runs shows about once a month , incorporates former WWE stars, and is about 2 hours of quality entertainment. Front row is 30 bucks. Now, I tried booking tickets upcoming to RAW in Philly. Not a PPV just a Monday Night Raw. So not even close to the ring, not ringside, but anywhere in the lower bowl was well over $200 dollars per ticket. Beyond outrageous. How anyone could ever dream of taking their family to a RAW would have to spend a months salary just to park & get in the door.

Jim Cornette has told the Austin Idol story about the Battle Royal check about 17 different ways. When he interviewed Idol, Idol said he took the check back to Tampa and the police knocked on his door and asked for it. Cornette has said he cashed it in Columbus because the people at the bank knew him. I have heard Idol say he cashed it at a bank in Atlanta. It is all BS. Two carneys still working people.....

To me something sticks out. Wonder if Lawler vs wacky 833@DJ was before the thing with Kaufman or after. Kaufman thing spilled into letterman. So it was early 80s. Did they take it seriously? Or was it played for laughs? Is that how he became the king of Memphis? By just kicking random.peoples ass in Memphis. .. Sort of seems like one of those publicity stunts. That corny would despise.
