He wrestled in the Portland territories.. when he said that it blown my mind and wanted to know more.. He said the reason Rick Martel isn't in the Hall of Fame cause Vince doesn't own Portland and I had to sit back and think, that's probably why he's not in either because of that video library not belonging to Vince at this point..

This is a reminder of the sad state of modern pro wrestling as a whole. There has been so much of the culture and craft of wrestling that has been lost over the last 2-3 decades. It seems like most "wrestling schools" teach the mechanical aspects of ring work but don't go in depth about the business. Understanding the big picture is something many wrestlers these days are sorely lacking in. They may know how to get a cheap pop or spot pops but they don't understand how to build a match, they don't know how to get someone else over while also getting themselves over(they only know how to get over by burying someone else, it seems), and the list goes on. Long story short, when wrestlers and promoters these days often seem to lack understanding of things like terminology, how can one expect a random fan to know these things when they're being fed incorrect meanings by the working professionals who should know better? Losing the language of pro wrestling may not seem like a big deal to some but by losing the language and in turn a large part of the culture of pro wrestling, people are losing the fundamentals of the business of pro wrestling.
@kenrickkahn4 жыл бұрын
Thanks to The Older Vince McMahon we have now and the sad part is he knows all of this stuff and chose not to be bothered with it, Paul Haymen in the early 1990s with ECW who seem to say *"f__k those terminology"* It's not the young wrestlers fault cause the generation before them didn't teach them the terminology correctly.. Just telling the truth..

@ambrosewetherbee83014 жыл бұрын
@@kenrickkahn Exactly, it isn't the newer guys and gals fault that the training they received has been lackluster more often than not. They've been taught by people who are either lacking in their own knowledge of pro wrestling or they purposefully held back knowledge from their students, for one reason or another. The real shame in all of this is that with each successive generation of wrestlers, the knowledge pool is diluting severely. We're at the point where there are few active workers in the ring who know anything significant about the business, from the language/slang to ring psychology to building/maintaining/growing a business, and so on. All people seem to know these days is how to mimic what they've seen without understanding why something works or doesn't work.
@ambrosewetherbee83014 жыл бұрын
@Joe Greene Very true. I think that Omega, The Young Bucks, and many other workers largely recognized as the top guys these days have extreme talent and ability but they often don't know how to fully utilize what they can do. For all their athleticism and physical capability, I've not seen guys like them put on a clinic of ring work where they displayed command of psychology and ability to tell a compelling story.

I imagine it would hard to give wrestlers today a general story and finish of the match and let them work it out without specifying "don't kick out of each others finishers a dozen times" and "don't do some elaborate spot that would make a great finish in a later match and kill it as a two count in an eight minute match". You would have to really retrain the guys to make it work. You don't want to tell two guys in the opening match to have a five minute match with the heel reversing a rollup while grabbing the tights and then watch them no sell burning hammers at the two minute mark because they want to get in cool shit.

People don’t say words like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to tell 'em stories that don't go anywhere - like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. Give me five bees for a quarter, you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah: the important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

It isn't just wrestling terminology that's been changed over the years., Language in general is an organic creature, growing and changing as it goes along, you notice this not only in words but in all areas of communication. For instance, the word "Gay" once meant Happy and now it means Homosexual, another example would be Spanish, you listen to someone from Spain talking from someone from Mexico, technically they're both talking in Spanish but over the centuries it's almost two separate languages. So yeah, wrestling terminology has changed too
