This track is a rare moment where the video was just as important as the song was. Up until '91, it was all hair metal songs about partying with supermodel girls who would dance around all the guys that were wearing makeup and leather straps. When this video hit, it was a sudden shock to the system where the new generation of kids all looked like this - slacker clothes, hair that wasn't done in front of a mirror, and a fed up attitude towards "fake partying". It didn't last long - this whole generation was depressed. But just before rap finally broke out in to the mainstream in the mid-ish/early 90's, this track defined a whole generation in one video.

1991 - Two weeks into my freshman year of college I'm sitting in the student union building and MTV premiers Smells Like Teen Spirit in front of dozens of students. Minds blown. This song/video obliterated a decade of really terrible hair band videos and songs. Nirvana and the legendary bands of the rock grunge era changed the music scene almost in an instant.

Dude ...what fake partying are you talking about? I love Nirvana but to suggest that the era before was "fake partying"...the era before was balls to the walls partying, I know cause I was there. I was teens in the 80s...and 20s and still very young when Nirvana came out. It was all good. But I have to say the 80s party was bigger, better, more inclusive only because the mass incarceration process over partying didn't occur until the 90s. Today we are still very careful when and where we party bc of the 'BS policies of the 90s. Don't listen to me, do your own research on alcohol/drug incarceration over the decades.
@norwegianblue2017
@norwegianblue2017 2 жыл бұрын
The glamrock/hair metal era of the late 80s was just a small slice of 80s music, which was probably the most musically diverse decade ever. And nobody partied harder than people in the 70s and 80s. Nothing fake about it. Nirvana was the real deal when they came out, but their genre of music got copied and corporatized just like every other genre. Today that is pretty much all that exists.

that was the real last wake-up call of a band for a whole generation. I can say that because I have seen Led Zeppelin and others live. When Nirvana first debuted in 1989, no one thought that this punk rock-inspired trio from Seattle would revolutionize music in the 1990's for a brief moment and changed the game forever... This music video was shot in 1991 on a low budget - Nirvana had played a show that night, and just invited their audience to the video shoot. Even tho the band was just playing to a track on the P.A. in a school gym, the audience went nuts and trashed the set. They were still broke when this video hit MTV in the fall of '91, and by November, the album 'Nevermind' knocked Michael Jackson's 'Dangerous' album to hit #1 on the US charts. Despite his limited skills playing guitar, vocalist/guitarist Kurt Cobain knew what he wanted his band to sound like when Nirvana came together in 1987 w/ Krist Novoselic on bass... Chad Channing soon joined on drums. Kurt wrote all the songs and most of the music for Nirvana, and completed the first album 'Bleach' in 1989 on a small budget for indie Seattle label Sub Pop. Nirvana was raw and primal, and had a lot of melody as well... the first record sold well, but Nirvana was not a typical rock band that sold millions of records in 1990. They looked weird, dressed cheap, and sounded under-produced. In early 1991, drummer Dave Grohl joined Nirvana and brought his hard-hitting beat into the band. An offer from Geffen Records that year got Nirvana back in the studio that year, and they cut their second album 'Nevermind' w/ producer Butch Vig. When 'Nevermind' was released in 1991 and "Smells like teen spirit" was the first single, Nirvana thought they would never become as big as Guns N' Roses or Metallica... but MTV made the single a huge success and 'Nevermind' sold millions that year. By 1992, Nirvana's unexpected success brought focus on the Seattle scene, which the press dubbed 'grunge' rock... Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains... all had huge hit records in '92. Kurt Cobain had been evicted from his apartment in '91, and then he was making million$. The band ended the year w/ a record of unreleased Nirvana tracks titled 'Incesticide'... However, pressure from success and health problems had driven Kurt Cobain into h addiction to curb his pain. The sudden fame was a burden on Cobain and not what he expected. Nirvana wanted a return to their primal, raw sound on the next record 'In Utero' in 1993, and performed an acoustic set of original songs and covers on MTV 'Unplugged' that year. However, on tour, Kurt was slowly coming apart. In Europe around early 1994, he reportedly attempted suicide, but survived... He was flown back to the States and checked into rehab, but jumped the wall eventually and took a flight back to Seattle... Kurt Cobain's body was found in his home by an electrician in April 1994. He had written a suicide note to his fans, shot himself up w/ h one last time, then took his own life w/ a shotgun to his head. Kurt Cobain was only 27 when he died. Nirvana was over. The band released the 'MTV Unplugged' acoustic record in late 1994... Cobain's final song recorded w/ Nirvana was "You know you're right" and it was released in 2002, showing how much turmoil he was in by his lyrics. Nirvana's drummer Dave Grohl was devastated after the death of Kurt Cobain; he had recorded an album of his songs while in Nirvana, on which he sang lead, played guitar, bass and drums. After some time off, he launched a new project Foo Fighters in 1995 and refused to perform any Nirvana songs live... Foo Fighters began touring that year and Grohl built his own success separate from Nirvana, and he embraced his role as vocalist/guitarist of Foo Fighters til today.

Perfect explanation! Sometimes I try to listen to this song like I have never heard it before, to try to get that feeling back. Sometimes it works and I can feel the nostalgia, "wow, what is this? who is this?" experience again. First time I saw this video, I literally called up all my buddies, and was like, "Hey, you have to check out this band!" Like you said, something about it was different and refreshing. Like we all said, "finally, something new" No more Slaughter, White Lion, Cinderella, Ratt, Whitesnake . . . not there was anything wrong with those bands, but the music was just turning into the same ol' mashed up crap we kept hearing over and over. It was time to put it to rest.

Plus he was ahead of his time. This was his message back when CDs would have a pamphlet type thing that would sometimes have lyrics, song list w/e the band or rap artist wanted to put Kurt included a message for their second album ‘In Utero’ was “If you’re a sexist, racist, homophobe or basically an asshole, don’t buy this CD. I don’t care if you like me, I hate you.” Good to see Gen X liking older music. If y’all are Gen X looks like it atleast. And if you haven’t heard this song I assume you are.

This "Grunge" Band is from Seattle. The genre of "Grunge Rock" was started in that city in the early 1990s. Kurt Cobain was so talented, and as we have all seen hundreds of times before, He was found dead in his Seattle Mansion of an apparent Heroin overdose. The rumors of murder continue to this day. Fame and money don't make you happy.

That drummer is now a legendary super rock star! The Foo Fighters is his band and they are what you want to hear if you want to listen to the best rock n roll there's ever been! I suggest Times Like These, All my Life, the Pretender, and Learn to Fly, their best songs in my opinion. They're an amazing band, so amazing in fact they sold out at Wembly Stadium in just minutes when they're tickets went on sale. Have you ever seen Wembly Stadium? It's huge!!!! Amazing guy, a m amazing band, you really need to react to them. If you don't, your definitely missing out!

The drummer (Dave Grohl) drummed to this entire song, while it played on loud speakers, during a show of his, a few months ago. The entire time his hair's in his face, and he's banging his head. After Kurt Cobain died, For a long time, Dave couldn't even talk about Nirvana, much less play Nirvana songs, because it made him sad. So seeing him drum to Nirvana again, is awesome. The video is on KZbin if you want to check it out.

It’s hard to understand now how revolutionary this song was in 1991. Hard rock was all hairspray, spandex and partying. This was dark, brooding and heavy with amazing hooks. But it didn’t just replace hair bands. Kurt Cobain took on pop icons. This song actually knocked Michael Jackson out of the number one spot on the charts. Kurt wrote great pop songs. They just happened to be hard as fuck.

As mentioned but just to reiterate .... Dave Grohl, the drummer, is now lead singer and a guitarist in Foo Fighters. One of the few bands who came to South Africa, so that was awesome. Also check out the Rocking 1000 story and his battle with Nandi Bushell, an 11 year old drummer. One of the nicest guys in rock history. Oh and check out his broken leg story.

I remember the first time I heard this on MTV and just being dumbstruck staring at my tv. Just absorbing it. The second time I saw it I knew I had a new favorite song and that things were now different. I was 16, a late GenXer. Such a great time period to come of age. We were the last era to grow up in the “old world.”

If I was able to get accurate ages I'd do the over/under percentage of people commenting about how " Nirvana changed music overnight" that wasn't even alive in 91/92 at somewhere in the 80.5 - 85.5% range

I lived in Seattle in 1980s and 90s. The city was electric with all the musicians moving in. Walking downtown you got to see many of the band members just walking around. You could see these groups for less than $10 and be blown away. Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam we were lucky enough to see them all. Such a fun time. ❤✌
