Proud Newfoundlander, proud of what this show represents. The accents aren't 100% accurate, but close - we're primarily descended from Irish and English settlers, and our seclusion from the rest of Canada until the 50s and 60s has allowed us to hang onto the unique accents ☺️
@stephen96095 жыл бұрын
I think the women do a good job with the accents but some of the men are terrible - you can hear that they are clearly British doing an accent (especially 1:35 , 2:00, and 3:08)

My wife is a huge theater buff, so we go to NYC a few times a year to see a few shows. We've seen pretty much every big hit show, and I can honestly say, this is probably my favorite. I'm not as big a theater fan as my wife, but I do enjoy a good show. Still, even with a really good show, I tend to get a little antsy near the end and start looking at my watch to see when it's going to be over. With this show though, I can honestly say, I never once looked at my watch, I was so engaged. In fact, I actually found myself wishing the show was longer. Thanks for adding this!! Most people don't realize the intense training just to make "NORMAL SPEECH" audible from a stage, let alone a SONG while you're doing cardio! (Throw in intense accent training ... that's way better than the average person can do). Unless an accent (thus everyone who speaks it to make in an accent) has PREFECT enunciation, pitch, & nuance to understand it clearly for 200+ people ... NO accent is going to be "perfect" on a stage. Because people don't speak perfectly. But speaking perfectly complete with lazy volume & muffled vowels, etc. runs the risk of NOT telling your story. That would reeeeeeally defeat the point of your show. (Unlike film, there's no living room volume button & subtles in a theater). ... Finally, yea, at first I thought the were a bit over-exaggerated, but after hearing real interviews of the people they represent, I was impressed how spot on they were. 👍

I am an Ontario high school social studies teacher and I became aware of this story long before the musical was written. In March 2014 I flew to Gander to look into this story. The thing that makes this show so great is that on top of being a legitimately inspiring story about the best of humanity, it also deals with the tragedy of the events it is based around in a way that, yes, does give them the appropriate weight so that it pervades the entire musical, but it does it with enough levity, humour and honest-to-God dignity to keep the mood afloat.

In had the privilege to see this show last night (27/01/20) and it blew my mind - absolutely love musical theatre and this show is among the top shows I have seen - with an incredible message. I have read the reviews here and most folk seem to be in agreement that this is an incredible piece of theatre with an amazing message - as quoted in the program - 'on 9/11 we saw the worst that could happen, but around 7000 people saw the best of humanity' - the best of humanity in this instance represented by the good folk of Gander/Newfoundland. Lets look at this for what it is - a SUPERB piece of musical theatre recounting the story of some truly amazing individuals. I'm a little dismayed by some of the folk leaving reviews complaining about the 'poor accents'. I as a British person would never recognize a Newfoundland accent if I heard it and whilst I understand that a true Newfoundlander will of course be proud and protective of their accent, for goodness sake give the cast a break - they are doing their best with what I understand to be a very precise and individual accent and this piece of theatre is not about whether the accent is 100% accurate, more celebrating the warmth and generosity of the owners of this accent. In my opinion the cast WITHOUT EXCEPTION did an amazing job - with the accents and also with performing the show.... hats off to them .....! I can't wait to see it again!

Saw this last night at the Phoenix in London. I couldn’t believe the energy on stage. The end of Welcome To The Rock is one of the rare moments when the show pauses. It’s 100 minutes of rapid fire changes of characters, costumes, accents and sets, as the show moves from high spirits, uproariously funny moments, to deeply moving set pieces. I saw this show twice, two separate tours, and my god. It's probably the most impactful piece of media I've ever seen. 'Prayer' still gives me chills, as well as "Jesus H. Oz, turn on the radio." I know I probably sound pretentious right now, but I'm being honest. Come From Away is probably the best show I've ever seen. Granted, it's the only Broadway quality thing I've ever seen, but still.

Seeing it this weekend on Broadway and I can't wait. I know it has a wonderful story, great music, and a talented cast, and even though I haven't seen it yet, I would so recommend getting tickets if you can. What a great musical!

"I am an islander" they sing to a room full of British people, from the British Isles.

It has nothing to do with that, “islander” is a term used here sometimes to refer to Newfoundlanders. Which is why they’re saying “I am an islander.” I’ve yet to hear a Brit being called an islander though, smart ass.

I find it really funny that I never got a single notif about people being weirdly touchy about my "hey don't words make for funny situations" comment. Maybe my sense of humour is just weird.
