What are they talking about like maturing or progressing makes fans not like you. That’s bs especially if you can pull it off creatively. That’s the very reason a lot of ppl gravitated towards Kanye, Kendrick, Cole, etc. Because they’d keep providing theirs fans with things their fans haven’t heard from them already. It’s more so about them not being afraid to “mature” or grow creatively/artistically. And unfortunately that’s not what you go to Drake for.

I never like that pop/r&b comparison mfs use in regard to them not writing their own shit. The talent(s) that they are known for/showcasing is usually their vocal abilities, dance skills, or a combination of both. The talent that became the main showcase of hip hop is how YOUR brain moves and thinks to formulate words, schemes, entendres, etc. Esso was on the right path and I think the convo got sidetracked from where he was going. For the most part, we don't really care if an artist has writers or whatnot. We loved Eazy, Dre, Puff, Ye, and the list goes on. What we don't like is when, as he put it, mfs walk around with they chest out and actin like they one of the dopest MCs ever just cuz some words came out of their mouth. A mf can recite Shakespere all day, be a dope actor on Broadway and all that jazz. But SHAKESPERE'S mind is gone always get the credit for that "brilliance". And nobody would ever be respected as a great playwright for simply reciting HIS words.

The origin of Hip Hop as KRS 1 stated is something you live. Rap is something you do. Joe Budden is Hip Hop because he came up when it was gladiator school were it was competitive, you had to be original, clever and have skill and raw talent. For example Joe can rap 10 minutes straight on song's like "Who Killed Hip Hop, Ordinary Love Sh-t, and No Church in The Wild". He will bar you to death. His era was competitive where you battled to be no. 1 Drake is a rapper, meaning he has a team of writers producers ready made songs available to him and an entire machine behind him. He's an artist like Britney Spears or Justin Timberlake. Hip Hop is the culture, a rapper could be anyone such as Drake because he doe's not fall under the elements of Hip Hop culture. Example, In Hip Hop culture it's blasphemy to let others write your rhymes

What Drake is missing in his marketing is to market an experience for the album so that the fans are not so clueless and left to project that for themselves by expecting a bunch of slappers. Drake has to be clearer with the themes, and connect the visuals deeper into the album theme and roll out. If I'm Drake I think he should do a tape where he mashes up records and concepts from his old albums and body of work into something paradoxically new. He can call the album Me Vs Me. Artwork is just Drake amongst other drake's at the round table and each Drake represents a period in his career.
