"War with the Newts" is a very funny book. It's a dark satire about a species of intelligent newts that are discovered and enslaved. They eventually rebel and try to destroy part of the continents so they have more "living space" in the form of new coastline (the book is from 1936). They guy that wrote it is the one that invented the term "robot".

One thing I've learned about this game is that, even on the higher difficulties, the AI is really bad at producing units (and warfare in general), so I believe that yes, there was literally just one or two barbarian units completely destroying kongo from within.

Beyond earth kinda does the 'taking the civ a certain way' thing, in that you can choose between becoming human-purists, alien huggers or robot/cyborg bois. Its for sure got its faults but I quite like the style and its pretty much civ but in space, is a nice change of pace from the usual civ games for me at least.

I was going to play it instead of civ 6, but saw the reviews weren't all that good, and I already owned civ 6 so here we are. I'll probably still give in and give humankind a go though, especially if there are mods that appear later.

I think you'll really enjoy Endless Space 2. Despite all the crap Amplitude gets and all the praise Paradox gets, I find Endless Space 2 to be more in line with my (and probably yours) tastes. I don't find Stellaris particularly replayable because it feels like you're just choosing what flavor of human you want to play as, the other players aren't truly alien like you would expect. Endless Space 2, on the other hand, does an AMAZING job at that. Each faction has strong identity and an amazing flavor. Endless Space 2 is my go-to whenever I get in the sci-fi mood, for sure, although its not a perfect game by any means.

I wrote a lengthy comment on civ6 in the recent video, but I guess forgot to post it lol. TL;DR: I agree, civ6 improves upon some things, but makes some stuff even worse, especially the trivial actions that somehow end up taking the majority of your time. Humankind seems to be suffering from balance issues (and failed expectations due to hype) now, but I've become more hopeful after reading praises from some long-time civ modders, trust them more than any reviewers. Looking forward to ES2! Haven't played it but Endless Legend was praised for having factions with very different mechanics, could be fun if you ever feel like going fantasy.

Endless Space 2 you say? Very well, I enjoy Devin game suffering. Humankind promised to be different and better then Civ. Well it is difficult (better and worse) but fundamentally is still the same 4X, gimmicky game that claims to be historical but the only historical elements are the names (of places and cultures). Because I must be that guy, I have to recommend on Amazon prime: the Boys and Invincible.
