Welcome to my first-time watching as we react to Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006). The spectacular follow up to 2003s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. This has been such a fun experience so far! The worldbuilding, lore, set pieces and memorable performances were all top notch!
In "Dead Man's Chest," Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) finds himself on a quest to settle his debt with the legendary Davy Jones (Bill Nighy). Jack, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) return as they navigate treacherous waters, encounter mythical sea creatures, and face the notorious Flying Dutchman.
This film was filled with thrilling action sequences, stunning visual effects, and unforgettable characters. The biggest surprise though was that heart-pounding Kraken attack sequence. We also got some epic sword fights that double down on the epic swashbuckling fun we loved in the first film.
We hope that you enjoy our reactions, commentary and review as we discuss the fantastic score, great action sequences, our amazement with the CGI and how the entire "Flying Dutchman" crew looked and why we believe Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is a worthy follow up that keeps the spirit that we enjoyed from the first film while trying new things.

They could... It's just that they exploit the artists nowadays. Not paid enough, not time enough. They use cgi for too many things, they can't put any love in it. It's like when handcrafted things got ran over by manufactured products. Got cheaper, got more, but quality doesn't give as much profit. It is sad. @@youtubewontletme You are 100% correct. Now studios rush the work too much and they don't pay the artists what their work is worth. It's why the SFX industry is trying so hard to get unionized like the writers and directors did. Yeah, the compass pointing at Jack for Elizabeth was because Jack was the key to getting Will back. The fact that she was surprised by the compass's direction and even feeling weirded out by it, tells me that she doesn't have those feelings for him.

I always thought that the compass was pointing at Will's new location, not the location of the chest.
@DocuzanQuitomos
@DocuzanQuitomos 21 сағат бұрын
One of the weak bits of the script is that it didn't took enough time to explore that confusion or rationalization about how Elizabeth thought/felt about the compass directions. Or even how the compass should be interpreted (in the first half of the film it's shown that, while the compass points to whatever your heart desires, you have to think clearly about what really your heart desires; that's why Jack spends some time focusing Elizabeths mind: you want to save Will; to save Will, you need the chest of Davy Jones... think, then, about the chest of Davy Jones to get that heading, rather than any other direction). I get it why they let it ambiguous (to let audiences wonder the classic "will they/won't they"); but it didn't land well with a bit of the audience that, precisely, complained Elizabeth Swan was written in an inconsisten way in this film.
@DocuzanQuitomos
@DocuzanQuitomos 20 сағат бұрын
@@Alvan81 Not exactly: she lets Jack die, because (otherwise) the Kraken will still go after them, and she knows Jack would do anything to cheat his way out of death (even if that means setting up Will, again, and again). She says it in the film; and the only way to defeat Jack in the game of pretending is to go all the way to play with his ego (it partially is a recurring theme for all characters in the film: how far they would take a farse, to win the game). That bit makes sense. The part that didn't land that well: while it's true the general acceptance of cheating is not a frozen thing in time (and different times will have different approaches to it), the first film cemented that Will and Elizabeth are soulmates; the script hints they are meant to be togheter. That's not a thing that will change. The film decided to "make things interesting" between Will and Elizabeth by adding conflict with a love triangle, but that wasn't necessary (the film was already packed with stakes, and there is no evolution to the triangle for any reason happening in the film); or at least is so poorly explored and placed it feels like that: cheap inconsequential cheating, just for the sake of cheating (the film tries to surprise us keeping things ambiguous... they get so ambiguous no one really understood what was happening there).

I saw "At World's End" in the theater three or four times and within minutes of that first viewing, I knew I was watching a masterpiece of filmmaking that took me by surprise. Barbossa is a character that I had sympathy with. He's portrayed as the "villain" in the original, but because being under a curse for 13 years, hunger unsatisfied, thirst unsatisfied. What lengths would you go to to end it and does that make you "evil"? In "At World's End", you meet Barbossa, the man. Still a pirate, of course, but a man freed from the curse and that movie made him my favorite. Plus, Geoffrey Rush is awesome!

And even though he has a "small" role, his PRESENCE was so intense that I regretted he was not more famous. For years he then appeared sometimes in good movies but he was not "world famous". That's a clever element, that happens too fast most people forget about it (and the film decided to keep the "will they, won't they" alive to add conflict to an already packed film, it ends up getting lost in the mind of the general audience). And they film tries to keep it as ambiguous as possible, it ended up bothering people who lost track of the hints. It's wasn't a bad move... but certainly it could have been handled better with extra scenes to improve/remind the contest (or even not try to hint a lot the "ah, but she might end up falling for Jack, after all").

The lore is that Sparrow was a slave ship Captain and he freed a hundred slaves. That's why Davy Jones wants 100 souls because they were supposed to sink and die. But Sparrow saved them from Davy Jones's locker then he got branded the pirate brand

as I understand it, Jones' requirement of 100 souls was out of irony that Jack freed 100 slaves, which had Beckett brand Jack a pirate for 'stealing 100 slaves' and had the Wicked Wench burned...Jones also left The Wench a burned out ship, instead of restoring it and being renamed The Black Pearl...kind of reminiscent about being careful what you wish for..or not being SPECIFIC when doing so.

My most favorite one of the whole franchise and the CGI especially on Davy Jones was LITERALLY ahead of its time. Some of the best period, given a lot as a great example to film students etc.

Fun Fact: If you are wondering why Jack Sparrow's eyes were black, it was because Johnny Depp was sensitive to sunlight. So, in order to keep him from squinting throughout the movies, they made contact lenses made out of the material they use to make sunglasses, so that his performance would be flawless. Jack would look pretty silly wearing sunglasses in all five movies, seeing as they didn't exist then lol. Just thought I would tell you guys about that little tidbit. 😁

This is handsdown one of my favourite movies and probably the best movie in the franchise. It has so many iconic moments including the score, the beautiful locations and amazing visual effects which to me are still better than today’s, also the unscripted moments which only Johnny Depp can deliver, like the falling down the stairs and the jar of dirt song with everyone’s reaction in curiosity, then the ending scene were Barbossa comes down the stairs and everyone is shocked with a genuine reaction because they originally thought Zoe Saldana‘s character would return.

The reason the compass kept pointing to Jack when Elisabeth was holding it was because he had the Letter of Marque from Becket on his person, she needs it for Will. So it's not actually pointing at Jack but to an object that was always with him, not realizing this she gets confused. Also the first time it happened Norrington had just asked her if she ever wondered how Will ended up on the Dutchman, if in that moment what she most wanted was to know "who is responsible for what happened to Will?" then that is another reason why it may have pointed to Jack at that point.

The compass was always pointing at Will. When seems to be pointing at Jack, it was actually pointing at Will, remember he left the Dutchman with the key and he shows up at that beach where she was, where the chest was, that’s why the compass was pointing at Jack’s direction, Will was coming from that direction.

When the compass pointed to Jack- I think what that means is Elizabeth wants everything Jack is and stands for. She’s always had a lure towards adventure/pirates and Jack is freedom in itself, he’s exactly what she wants in a sense (doesn’t need to be romantically)

Fun fact: there was a deleted scene on the Liars Dice scene. Will first wagered one hundred years of service against his father's freedom and won the game against Davy Jones, and also won his father's freedom. Then Will challenged Jones to another game, this time it was for eternity of servitude against the key and Bill joined in even though he knew he would lose his freedom that Will won for him.

Among all comment i read: My shoutout to screenwriters - Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott. They together know how to write a good story. They made: Aladdin (1992), The Mask of Zorro & The Legend of Zorro, Godzilla (1998), Small Soldiers, The Road to El Dorado, Shrek, Déjà Vu (2006), National Treasure film series, The Lone Ranger and of course Pirates of the Caribbean film series

Unpopular opinion: but Beckett technically isn’t a horrible guy (I mean he is to us as we are on the side of pirates at the moment) - with what pirates were he did a lot for the regular people 😅 but he was portrayed PHENOMENALLY. We have a villain like Davy Jones who looks so creepy, but something about a regular man who is confident in wiping out crime no matter what is somewhat more effective for me idk why

This movie unfortunately received alot problems with a lawsuit. The natives depicted in this were the Ciribs, the native ancestors to who are now known as Dominicans. Nothing from their history would show that they were ever cannibals or practiced cannibalism. This was a falsehood created by the ones who try to wipe em out. There was law put in place that if the natives were savage and unable to be deal with diplomatically, they had permission to eradicate them. So they reported back that they were cannibal monsters with sharp teeth in order to be allowed to kill them.
