A very sweet victory for Miss Chile. That same year, before Miss Universe, she competed at the Miss Sud America Pageant and she did not place at all. Miss Colombia won that pageant but what a reversal of fortune, Miss Colombia did not place at all when she competed at the Miss Universe which was won by ... Miss Chile ... Cecilia Bolocco!

At the time of her crowning she was the oldest Miss Universe in the history of the pageant. I believe she was 26. She was a beautiful, mature and articulate Miss Universe. One of my favorites.

At only 18, she did a fantastic job. However you could tell she wasn’t ready for the universe yet with her baby face. I feel for this child, you could see her tearing up not wanting to win the competition and just go back to Italy. Such a gorgeous exotic look that I wish more mediterranean classic beauties would appear on the stage. She was just a girl not yet a woman. I would see something not secure with her eyes here. This was the first time 3 consecutive Latinas won Miss Universe with Puerto Rico in 1985, Venezuela in 1986, and Chile in 1987. This wouldn't happen again until 2008-2010 with Venezuela in 2008 and 2009 and Mexico in 2010. Technically it did happen from 2001-2003 with Puerto Rico in 2001, Panama in 2002, and Dominican Republic in 2003 but Panama didn't actually win in 2002, Russia did but was dethroned and Panama as 1st Runner-Up took over the title.
