Now, though, work needs to be meaningful. Needs to be productive. Under an Albert Camus philosophy, perhaps, one might find fulfillment from being active, from doing something, but I personally think it's more important that, whatever you do, it's something worth doing. Leave the world a little bit better than it would be without you, you know? In that way, while I disagree with the concept of Hades' wall, I never believed in the Garden of Eden as a true paradise. Work gives us purpose

Sometimes things are lost to creative liberty and artistic interpretation. One of my absolute favourite Hadestown details that isn't commonly included in animatics is that during Epic III, at the part where Orpheus sings "But what he doesn't know is that what he's defending.. is already gone." Hades actually turns around to look at Persephone. To check if she's still there. He didn't give Orpheus the ultimatum because he thought he was too weak on his own, he gave it to him because Hades was also a man in love. Because he knew the madness that is yearning for the woman you love. The fear and anguish of losing her. Because Hades loves. Because Hades knows he would turn around. Because Hades would fail. At least that's my interpretation. :Dc

I love the animatic for His Kiss, The Riot. It made me realize that Hades is also talking about himself when he says, "Nothing makes a man so bold, as a woman's smile and her hand to hold. But all alone his blood runs thin, and doubt comes, doubt comes in." He's talking about his own challenge with Persephone leaving for half a year. When she's gone he can't keep from thinking "What if she never comes back, what if she's gone for good" and that's why he keeps coming for her earlier and letting her go late even as her resentment keeps growing. That last line he's talking about himself "Doubt comes in". I think he wants them to succeed, so he knows that he himself could succeed.

Every year, Hades turns around, doubting that Persephone would ever come back to him. That's why he keeps coming to get her, he's checking if she's still there and if she'll come with him. It's why he keeps trying to make Hadestown like the overworld- brighter, warmer, and full of riches. He wants Hadestown to be like the overworld so he would be worthy and she would stay. Orpheus was so focused on the song that when the storm passed and he turned in the sun, he found Eurydice was gone because he didnt provide for her. He is scared that "what he doesnt know that what he's defending is already gone". Hades knows that Orpheus has doubts too. Not about Eurydice's loyalty, but about himself and his worthiness to have her. He will turn. He will check He knows that he and Orpheus are the same. It is love and doubt that dooms them to make their mistakes.

I love how this Hades projects his own fears and doubts onto Orpheus, which leads him to create "the test". Like, none of them would be on this road, if Hades wouldn't have started to doubt Persephones love when she was gone upside.

One of the things I like best about Promises, too, is that it's Orpheus making it clear that he's seeing the world more for how it is. He's less idealistic, less "oh the rivers and the trees and the birds will take care of our problems for us," and more "life is hard sometimes. Maybe a lot of times. But I'll still walk it with you" that feels like he's really matured while still keeping his core kindheartedness and deep love for those around him and, most of all, Eurydice of course

"Give them the rope and they'll hang themselves." It's not saying that if you give them hope, they'll ruin themselves. It's saying that if you give them any way that they can fail, they'll fail on their own without you having to do anything. You tell Orpheus that he has to follow one rule or Eurydice can't go with him, and he, now knowing that there's a way to fail, can't help but break the rule and fail. Also, in regards to the animatics, the artists do base them off the actors for this show as well. The main reason there's some disparity between them is because Hadestown started off as an off-broadway show with a different cast and different costumes. However, the appearances are almost always: Orpheus - White shirt, suspenders, red bandana Eurydice - Short black hair, long black coat (act 1), worker uniform (act 2) Hades - Short white hair and beard, huge, muscular, brick wall tattoo on one arm, long black trenchcoat (start of show), dark vest over a dress shirt (in Hadestown) Persephone - Curly hair, frilly dress (green when on surface and black when in Hadestown) Hermes - Short frizzy hair, wrinkled face, shiny blue suit The Fates - Greyscale dresses, headwrap adorned with a feather

His Kiss, The Riot being fully internal does add the interesting note that Why We Build the Wall wasn't just him bullshitting to manipulate the laborers, he really does think he's doing the right thing by bringing in the poor and desperate and giving them work for shelter- still horrible but a different type of horrible then you think at the end of act 1 when it feels like he's just lying through his teeth. Road to hell, good intentions, all that.

For the line "who makes all the best laid plans" and "who makes work for idle hands," there's cultural context I think you've overlooked. "The best laid plans of mice and men (often go awry)" is usually said in part to make the statement "sometimes stuff just goes wrong." And "The devil makes work for idle hands" is a popular saying, meaning "If you don't give people something to do, they'll find something destructive to do instead." Which, still fine to disagree with the premise, but the double meaning of the latter phrase in particular, referencing himself as "the devil" in the traditional sense, but also referencing himself as the overseer of the workers, is still some pretty clever wordplay.

I just came here to add this too! Glad I checked to see if someone else had said it. It's another example of the really clever wordplay in this song especially and the musical as a whole. I do also want to add that there's a Neil Young quote "The devil fools with the best laid plans" and that's what I think is being referenced in the first line.

few things promises is a direct echo of wedding song. It's even shown in the vow like lyrics at the end. It's like they're getting a repeat. In wedding song orpheus promised her golden wedding bands, a wedding table, a wedding bed made of feathers. Promises he couldn't keep. In promises he realizes that none of things matter and that he couldn't give her those things, but he will walk with her any way the wind blows. He's not going to abandon her again like he did in the first act. Having those two songs parallel each other is a great way to showcase the growth their relationship underwent throughout the story. His kiss the riot is essentially an introspection song for hades. The end of the song he is actually refering to himself. Nothing makes a man more bold than a woman's smile, a hand to hold, but all alone his blood runs thin, and doubt comes in. He is talking about the doubt he felt when persephone leaves him to go to the overworld. The doubt he has that she'll ever come back. Patric Page often performs those last words (and doubt comes doubt comes in) in an almost whisper and it's really chilling. It's clear he is talking about a feeling he is deeply familiar with. The reason he gives orpheus this deal is to see if he could overcome the same feeling of doubt he has been grapling with for so long. What will orpheus do when he all alone? Again the parallel's drawn between the two relationships are immaculate

Actually in most cases, the animatics you watched actually made the characters look exactly like the costuming for the stage production! Like how the dark marks on Hades’ arm is actually a sleeve tattoo of a brick wall, the fates wear all grey and turbans while carrying their own instruments, Hermes wears an all silver suit with small feather features, etc.

I love the Promises animatic because of the artistic choice of not showing the workers. When Orpheus asks, "and what about them?" he looks at the 'camera'. And when Eurydice says "we'll show the way / if we can do it so can they" she gestures towards us, the audience. There's a frame between these moments where both of them just break the "fourth wall" of the screen and stare at you. It's so beautiful, especially given the message of Hadestown and how the audience often acts as an active participant in the musical.

8:23 I know Mortius already reacted to all of it, but I wish I could gaslight him like crazy here. It would go something like this: "You're saying that sarcastically, but this is a RETELLING of the story. Remember the EXACT words Hermes used in the first song: Someone has to tell the tale, whether or not it turns out well. Maybe it'll turn out this time. So there still is hope." Edit: Motrius, if you ever plan on showing this to Casper, remember to use this exact gaslighting. It would be so funny. Yeah...funny.

Hiss Kiss/The Riot, emphatises, for me, the similarities between Orpheus and Hades himself: "She's out of sight and he's out of his mind" "Nothing makes a man so bold as a woman's smile and a hand to hold, but all alone his blood runs thin and doubt comes... Doubt comes in" (His Kiss/The Riot) Is how Hades felt every time Persephone had to leave for Spring, what caused their problems in the first place, why he wanted to mimic the above world in order to entice her to stay longer, even if it didn't work as he'd hoped. "But for half of the year with Persephone gone, his loneliness moves in him crude and black, he thinks of his wife in the arms of the Sun, and jealousy fuels him, and feeds him and fills him, with doubt that she'll never come, dread that she'll never come, doubt that his lover... Will ever come back" (Epic II) "Young man, I was young once too, sang a song of love like you. Son I too was left behind, turned on one too many times..." (Chant Reprise)

You probably already recorded the last video and maybe you talk about it there, but Hades makes Orpheus suffer just like he himself does every spring. Hades doubts every single time if Persephone is going to return to him or stay in the sun, that’s why he’s so afraid. He’s going to make Orpheus feel the same doubt, if Eurydice will stay by his side or leave him The animatic showed this parallel as well, that’s why it’s cutting between those two relationships in the last seconds;)

Like you said the breakthrough was very recent, not even getting the chance to settle before the fates (whether they're your inner voice or not) immediately put him under stress that will change EVERYTHING no matter what he chooses he goes against part of whats important to him (either his wife or his stability) and what do you do then? You go back to whats familiar even if its toxic or self destructive. Poor man wasnt even given a chance🥺

promises is one of the songs that got the biggest emotional reaction from me when i saw it live, and i was not expecting it at all. the way orpheus carries his sincerity throughout the show and how it develops is one of the things that moves me the most idk... if it was the same orpheus as the one in the beginning he would've not needed to check all of these variables, "are you SURE you want to go?", "what about him?" the doubt seeping into his soul and reminding us that he was still hurt by how eurydice left him, but he takes responsibility of that so fully and earnestly. but seeing him doubt himself, seeing him take back what he so earnestly and naively promised her in wedding song is just so heart wrenching even though this song is probably one of the last happy ones. EDIT: the actor i saw performed the song quite differently to reeve carney, i think that this sort of aspect is more highlighted in his rendition. i saw the west end understudy (simon oskarsson) - he was amazing! if you ever get the chance you should definitely see this live, even if in the very back of the theatre. its life changing

Mortius reeling at Hades apparent lack of character development from in universe 5 minutes prior in Epic III is just so great. The character development wasnt Hades realizing his operation of the underworld is done in one of the most heinous ways possible, it was just him realizing he royally screwed up with his wife and finally knows how much and what he needs to work on to get back to a loving relationship. Even after the two reconcile and get better eventually, Hades will still be a labor baron dedicated to filling idle hands with hard labor till eternity fizzles out, or at least until Orpheus hits him up with Epic IV which is all about ending capitalism.

There's a fun double meaning in "Who makes work for idle hands?" that I'm not sure you caught- while you're objectively correct that our society's obsession with constant work is unhealthy, it's an old attitude. Which is why there's the well-known proverb "Idle hands *are the Devil's tools*." Hades is rhetorically positioning himself as the Devil, here, right after saying "Devil take this Orpheus" and right before making a bargain with him. I'm sure that will be fine. :)

At first when I watched this I thought it didn't make much sense to have Hades immediately revert back to his cold self to make the deal, but I think it makes a bit of sense now. Almost every time the fates interact with a character, they make them revert to their original character traits, eurydice tries to be an understanding wife but then the fates get in her head and she's all out for number one like she used to be, they inadvertently make Orpheus revert to his optimism even though he never really left it (they got him hopeless for a second but then he did a hard reset, so maybe this one isn't so much them but hear me out.) all of these interactions have something to do with a moment of weakness, the fates essentially pressure eurydice into making a deal with Hades convincing her that it will give her some relief, they tried to play on orpheus's doubts and only reinforced his core character traits, so with Hades it kind of makes sense that he would at least temporarily revert to the cold persona after interacting with the Fates, he might actually feel regret for what he did to Orpheus and eurydice after the fact,. for as despicable as Hades is I truly believe he had a change of heart, it just so happens that the fates brought out the worst in him for one last encore so that they could achieve their purpose.

So every Hades/Persephone pair kind of works out what divided them as part of their character work when they step into the roles. Old interviews with Amber Gray (Persephone) and Patrick Page (Hades) reveal that what they came up with when they created these roles is particularly heartbreaking. They envisioned that prior to this divide, Persephone had become pregnant but lost the baby. As a result she descended into drink and drugs ('a little morphine in a tin", and her obvious intoxication throughout the musical until "How Long") and Hades, heartbroken and unable to help his wife turned to his work. He began to work obsessively on Hadestown ("Chant" reveals this) to try to comfort and soothe his wife who was drifting away. Unfortunately it became a prison for them both, something she resented and he persisted in, hardening them. Hades' biggest flaw is his ANXIETY. The fates are manipulating him too, using his own pain to make him trap himself. This is per Patrick, who has anxiety IRL to the point of having the support of a service animal. Hades wants to believe that Orpheus will succeed, that he can succeed and mend things with Persephone... but his own mind, poisoned by the Fates, is his worst enemy, and the whole reason he has the chains so tight on his workers and his wife. Persephone has responded by running away and putting on a front through the vice-filled haze, until Orpheus softens her outlook and she begins to try to help again, including trying to reconcile with Hades (How Long, Epic III, They Danced.)

They are literally immortal... from all fiction with long lived characters, they always find no reason... idle hands is for the immortal, theyve left their souls behind so what would they do but regret... work is the escapism.

Now Hades is taking it to an extreme, but I think if I had to live out eternity with nothing to occupy my time I would go cuckoo for coco puffs

Every time you say she starved to death in a snowstorm going off the animatic I die inside. That was not portrayed in the musical. She literally puts her tokens into Hermes' ticket cup and takes the train.

Mortius let me ask you this which is worst? Knowing how this story ends or not knowing, believing that everything works out, only to be surprised that it doesn’t.
