Anne Boleyn was incredibly smart and actually interested in politics, despite what the song may want you to think. (Writers of the show admitted before that they kinda regret leaning into stereotypical version of how she's usually portrayed, tho tbh the song slaps) Even during her life there were a lot of rumors circling around her, mostly from people who loved Catherine and refused to accept Anne as the new queen. Rumors include: her being a witch, her having a 6th finger and other kinds of deformities on her body, giving birth to a deformed fetus and so on. Anne actually did have a boy, but she miscarried him at 15 weeks, and interestingly, on the same day Catherine of Aragon was buried. (thus no, she didn't wear yellow to a funeral, that was spread by her haters after she was executed) She was accused of adultery with 5 men, including her own brother, and executed at the Tower of London along with the men and one of her ladies in waiting, who was accused of helping her with secret meetings. Most historians think that the charges were made up bc Henry wanted to move onto next woman, bc Anne couldn't produce a boy to succeed the line. Ironically enough, it's her only surviving daughter, Elizabeth I that went on to rule for decades and ended the Tudor line by refusing to marry and bear children.

It is said that Anne refused to sleep with him unless they were married, which caused the whole CA divorce - Church of England thing. So maybe she thought she could turn down his advances that way? We'll never know

​@@AadenKDragon there is a documental that even uses her own bible and what she wrote on it to show us that she had the idea about the separation with the catholic church, she was religious and gave Henry the idea that Catherin could not give him a male heir because she was supposed to be his older brother's wife and the bible siad you can not marry the wife of your brother so it should have being enought justification to have another wife, but Catherin's family was well conecte with the church, that is why she was chosen to be Queen, so they did not supported Anne as the next wife, Anne convinced Henry that it was about the church using their power against him and not God not allowing them to get married so he would create his own church. It is pretty good and show us how capable Anne was, how her and Henry really had a relationship since she became a misstress and their love was what made them decide that no baby born of their unión deserved to be a bastarda, and how she had terrible luck later, specially after Henry had that accident that changed him completly

I don't have as much facts for Anne boleyn as i would like to BUT here IS a few that are interesting. Surprisingly, ALL of the queens are intertwined with eachother, either by blood line or other circustances (This isn't mentioned on the musical at any point so i might as well tell you) You already know how Catherine Of A. and Anne B. shared time in the castle, but funilly enough, Jane S. spend time with them there aswell as she was a lady in waiting during both of their times as queens, and it's said that Henry cheated on Anne with Jane before her beheading. While A. Of Cleves didn't had the role of queen for to long, she had K. Howard as one of her ladies in waiting who, TURNS OUT, was Anne Boleyn's cousin (The Six fandom calls them the beheaded cousins) last but not least, even tho C. Parr didn't get to meet any of the others in person, C. Of Aragon was her god-mother, as Parr's mom used to be one of Aragon's ladies in waiting, and decided to name Parr after her. It's just so surprising that, one ways or another, all the queens were conected to one another more than just being one of Henry's wives👑

A fun fact about Catherine of Aragon: she was a descendant of the house of Lancaster, and the third cousin of Henry VII. Henry VII had his claim to the throne through the Beaufort line of the House of Lancaster. The problem with this is that, initially, the Beaufort line was illegitimate. When John of Gaunt (son of Edward III) married his mistress Katherine Swynford, he legitimised the Beaufort line by royal and papal decree. But there was a caveat: the Beaufort line could never inherit the crown of England. Technically, Catherine of Aragon’s line of descent did not go through the Beaufort line. Therefore her claim through her Lancanstrian ancestors could be argued to be stronger. A fun fact about Jane Seymour: she followed Catherine of Aragon when she was exiled. Being a fervent Catholic, she refused to acknowledge Anne Boleyn as the new queen.

You had questions, and I hope you don't mind me providing some answers. This version of Anne captures her charisma and confidence really well, but as so many people in the comments have said she was an incredibly intelligent woman. She kept Henry at bay for seven years from when he first showed interest in her, her sister Mary had already been picked up and discarded by him and she was not going to let the same thing happen to her. She wanted a ring on her finger, or else nothing. Henry wasn't used to being refused and it just made him more and more desperate to have her. Eventually they did end up sleeping together before they were married, Anne was pregnant when she was crowned Queen, but it's commonly believed that she only allowed it once she could see her way clear to the throne. She was a big supporter of the Reformation, the European movement away from Roman Catholic worship, and she supposedly owned many banned books about religion which she could have got into serious trouble for. People who supported the Reformation believed that holy scripture should be allowed to be translated into other languages besides Latin so that everyone could understand the Bible, because the general population of peasants who hadn't been educated in Latin only had the priest's word for what the Bible said. She managed to interest Henry in the books, which apparently helped when he broke from the Roman Catholic church and set up the Church of England. Yes, he genuinely did set up his own religion to divorce Catherine and marry Anne. It made his later divorce from Anne of Cleves so much easier. In the end the main thing that proved to be Anne's downfall was that she didn't give Henry a son. She had one daughter and multiple miscarriages, and Henry got bored very quickly. They weren't the most harmonious of couples, both had hot tempers and arguments became more and more frequent especially when Henry was caught flirting with other women. The charges of adultery Henry used to condemn her were almost certainly trumped up; he even accused her of sleeping with her own brother. Most historians believe that he was just using any and every method he could to ensure that he could get rid of her. By this time he'd noticed Jane Seymour among Anne's ladies in waiting and wanted her instead, exactly in the same way he'd first noticed Anne when she was lady-in-waiting to Catherine. In a small act of mercy he arranged for a French swordsman to behead Anne rather than have her suffer through beheading by axe, which wasn't always completed in one go and thus could be a much more brutal method. Anne's head was taken off in one go, and there's a famous story that her lips were seen to still be moving in prayer after she was beheaded. To help with "Wearing Yellow to a Funeral", yellow was the colour of mourning in Spain and after the announcement of Catherine's death Henry and Anne dressed in yellow and celebrated. Yellow was obviously not a mourning colour in England, so it was basically a smack in the face to Catherine's memory.

I always experience a bittersweet feeling when it comes to this song, that is because I think it captures the twisted and tragic irony of Anne's story and memory; It's my favorite out of the whole musical and Anne is also my favorite character, yet it's so tragic how, despite the many years which have gone by, her image has been twisted and shaped based on the false rumors Henry spread to make himself look like the victim of the situation. In actuality, she repeatedly rejected him during the time in which he was sending her letters, being that she was already in love with another man. She literally rejected him and, in response to one of his letters wrote: "Your wife I shall not be, both in respect of mine own unworthiness, and also because you have a queen already. Your mistress I will not be". Though of course, Henry was a king, and the Boleyn's would've never turned down an opportunity like this considering how desperate Henry was to have Anne. Sooo...well, she didn't have much of a choice and played the game she had to. On the day of her coronation she was mocked and seen as a snake, immediately gaining the people's displease considering how highly they thought of queen Catherine at the time. Catherine herself didn't even resent her, she even stated that people would one day "lament her (Anne's) case". Despite the initial obstacles though Anne still tried her hardest to fulfill the traditional role of a queen at the best of her capabilities: she gave alms to the poor, provided for widows, favored investments in the arts and scolarships, even went as far as to sew shirts and smocks for the needy. Though, the public still hated her, viewing her as an heretic and an adultress. Still, in all of this, Henry, as always, was yearning for a male heir, something which Anne unfortunately also failed to provide, just like Catherine before her, giving birth to a healthy girl instead, Elizabeth I; added to that was the fact that she would've miscarried two other times after the birth of Elizabeth, thus making Henry start to question his decision to marry her, and of course, he went to look for "solutions" outside of marriage as always. The request for the annulment of Henry's marriage to Anne was denied, and things spiraled out of control and eventually Henry, supported and helped by the likes of Thomas Cromwell, the most notorious of Anne's allies, decided it was time to find an alternative way out. Subsequently, Cromwell made a move against her, presenting false and unfounded accusations of adultery, incest, and even plotting against the king himself. Needless to say Henry was waiting for nothing less than this, and was easily convinced by Cromwell's words, so declaring for Anne to be arrested and later beheaded. Anne declared her innocence up until the very end, though unfortunately for the woman, the court which was responsible for hosting her trial was composed of only men, enemies of hers nonetheless, who despised and disliked her for the same reasons mentioned earlier. She was arrested on May 2nd 1536 and held prisoner in the Tower of London, where, three years prior, she had awaited her coronation. On the eve of her execution, according to the Constable of the Tower, Anne joked “I heard say the executioner was very good, and I have a little neck”. Henry had granted her the ‘small mercy’ of dy1ng at the hands of a skilled swordsman rather than an executioner’s axe. The execution of a queen for treason was an unprecedented event, and Henry and Cromwell ensured that it was carefully stage managed within the walls of the Tower, rather than at the public execution sites outside. Finally, On 19 May 1536, Anne was beheaded on Tower Green. Her final reported words were uncontroversial, “I am come hither to d1e, for according to the law and by the law I am judged to d1e, and therefore I will speak nothing against it. I pray God save the King, for a gentler nor a more merciful prince was there never.”, words most likely born from Anne's consideration for the safety of her infant daughter Elizabeth. Henry then went on to marry Jane Seymour, a mere 11 days after Anne's d34th. She was a victim of her time unfortunately, and as Catherine of Aragon predicted, people are still lamenting her tale to this day

Anne Boleyn's costuming and vocals were modeled on Miley Cyrus, Avril Lavigne and Lily Allen. The green is for the apocryphal story that Henry VIII wrote "Greensleeves" for AB. This was written by Toby Marlow & Lucy Moss, students at Cambridge University and members of the Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society. In 2016, Marlow was chosen to write the society's annual entry to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017. KH was the cousin of AB. You will find that there were lessons about life in court that KH needed to have learned from AB's experiences & fate. EDIT: the entire history that is portrayed through the entire musical is fascinating, but it isn't family friendly. Henry wasn't a good person, and he discarded women like used handkerchiefs. Yes, Henry created the Church of England and separated from the Roman Catholic Church because he needed quickly to marry his pregnant mistress. When it came time to relieve himself of AB and move on to JS, he had the decency to import a swordsman from France, so that AB wouldn't be executed by an axman. It meant that she was killed quickly, rather than requiring multiple strikes from an ax and dying in immense pain. Your facial expressions through all of this are classic.

Of all the queens in Six, I feel like Anne Boleyn's song is the least historically accurate. She was actually both smart and politically minded. Henry had previously taken her sister Mary as a mistress, and then tossed Mary over, leaving her disgraced and with nothing to show for it. So when Henry took an interest in Anne, she put him off, insisting she would only sleep with him if he married her, hoping to have the protection of marriage to avoid being treated like her sister. (Keep in mind that you couldn't really say outright no to a king in that time, at least not without incredible risk. Also, yes, ironically, she might have survived if she hadn't held out for marriage.) Henry was both desperate for a son and incredibly horny for Anne, so he tried to get his marriage to Catherine of Aragon (who was past childbearing age now) annulled, but the Pope refused (for a variety of reasons, some political). After multiple years of machinations, Henry broke from the Catholic Church to establish the Church of England with himself as the head specifically so that he could declare his marriage to Catherine invalid and marry Anne. However, after Anne had had several miscarriages and still births--whose only surviving child was a girl (the future Elizabeth I)--things rapidly deteriorated between her and Henry. When Elizabeth was just 2, Anne was convicted of treason in the form of adultery and sentenced to death. To my understanding, most historians believe that the charges were false, contrived with a view of getting her out of the way.

Regarding captions, I 100% agree, and it makes me HATE the removal of that community captions feature even more. All it needed was a feature where the uploader could approve or deny the captions before they're put on the video. Videos were able to have captions in dozens of languages, share jokes among the community, and most importantly of all, allow you to understand what's being said XD I put captions on just one of my videos in just one language and it was the most tedious thing ever. The fame part is that first Henry's desire to marry her required Catherine to annul the marriage or she had to die under the Catholic Church. So he just made the same religion that allows divorce. And then also, while not the next ruler of England, her daughter becomes Queen for a very long time. But next song is the most traditional ballad. You may not see this but Haus of Holbein and Get Down kind of go together as a solid chapter. At least to know you are in Germany for parts of it.

It was written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, both of whom were students at Cambridge University and started as a project that Toby (who majored in History and Music I think) started writing it and Lucy then joined in and wrote parts later on in the script. there's a few inaccuracies in this show and really, anne boleyn was done the dirtiest. the show offers a very stereotypical portrayal of her - ditzy, naive, but also a seductive temptress (which is what she was more or less accused of when henry decided to behead her). she's definitely considered the most significant of the six for how she indirectly caused the split from the catholic church and birthed elizabeth i, one of england's most successful monarchs. the truth of her (as far as we know) is instead that she was very politically minded and excelled in court on her own merit. she had some other family involved there, such as her father thomas and her sister mary, who served alongside her as a lady in waiting to the first queen Catherine of aragon. mary is more accurately one of the women mentioned in 'no way', having been a mistress of the king and then subsequently thrown out. anne knew this, she was weary of the king as a result. it's also because of this that she actually did her utmost to *avoid* henry, rather than encouraging his advances as is generally taught. it was a period of i think around 7 years between when henry first decided to pursue her and when the courtship ended with marriage. you obviously can't directly say 'no' to the king but it's likely that this was her trying to put it off for as long as humanly possible, despite the fact that her father was very much pushing for her to give in, what with the elevation in status it would offer (since his other daughter failed rather spectacularly at seducing the king for any meaningful length of time). anne then spends 3 years married to henry where she has i think three miscarriages (?) and at least one of them is a stillborn son. which henry reacts to thinking, hey, god clearly doesn't want to give me a son. the introduction to 'don't lose ur head' mentions anne 'overlapping' with catherine because of how henry began the courtship while he was still married, and the same thing happens again with lady in waiting jane seymour, who served both catherine and anne and has subsequently been in court an awfully long time. there's a lot of debate as to whether anne actually said anything treasonous, but it's almost certain she didn't commit any of the deeds of adultery she was accused - partly because the accusations were often rather outlandish. the rest of england probably recognised that at least in part but again: he's the king. he wanted her dead. she was going to die. anne boleyn is beheaded in the tower of london in may 1536, just 17 days after her initial imprisonment (the court's detective work was shoddy at best, but then again, it probably wasn't intended to actually be functional). she's beheaded in one clean swing with a sword, by a swordsman brought in from france especially. being easier to control and therefore less likely to botch, this was a strange kind of mercy from henry. the same courtesy was not extended to anne's maternal cousin katherine howard, the fifth wife, who was hit thrice with an axe before the head was fully severed, and spent the last few days before her execution practising how to correctly lay her head on the block, because she'd seen so many executions go wrong. Also, while I agree about animatics needing more subtitles, its not exactly easy for artists either. I can only speak for myself, but I know for the times I managed to do a full length animatic, it tooks me weeks(or longer) to draw that out. By the time I'm ready to post something like that, I was ready to be done with it. I also have audio processing disorders(and I'm physically disabled, which doesnt makes the art process easier), so I understand being frustrated. If I'm unable to make something out and its from a media/musical, I look it up and hope theres a transcript. For the section after Dont lose your head, there isnt one, so there isnt even a way to properly subtitle it unless the artist just knows 10000% whats being said I think a better way to handle the subtitle is just for someone to ask the artist if theyre able to add subtitles, or ask if they'd be open to someone adding them for them. Its not always a possibility for the artist to, be that for time or physical reasons (Ive added subtitles for things, and even a minute of audio can take hours on hours to makes sure you get everything in order and timed right I'm not upset at you, ofc!! I just think the artists need to be given some slack, since we're already providing these videos completely for free, taking weeks or months of our time without anything back other than knowing people might like it (which that isn't even a guarantee all the time). If theyre able to add subtitles thats awesome, and if theyre not then it sucks, but there could be reasons why they didnt

This is some really valuable insight and I agree. Captions are obviously ideal to have for accessibility and if at all possible they should be there. But I really think it’s important for everyone who watches these animatics (myself included) to keep in mind that these are fan videos usually made by one single person putting dozens if not hundreds of hours of work in. It’s their passion project, and usually not their job. I think it’s amazing that these videos are the way that people get to experience theatre that cannot otherwise do so. However, it’s not fair to hold the *fans* who make them to a higher standard than the professionals who own the rights to produce, stage, and distribute recordings of the shows. Theatre is inaccessible because it is gatekept by them, not because of random internet videos. The reason the audio used here is bad enough to make the lack of captions especially noticeable is because it comes from an *illegal* recording of the show that fans have to use because no option to use a high quality legal one is available. So yeah, artists should absolutely caption their fan videos if they can. It’s unfair that people who have hearing loss or auditory processing problems or any other issues with hearing cannot experience the videos in the same ways as people who don’t. Captioning the videos absolutely helps with that and is a great feature to add for that reason. But at the end of the day these are fan works by people usually making them for passion and their own enjoyment and graciously sharing their art with the rest of us. Complaining that they aren’t doing that to a high enough standard rubs me the wrong way. Edits: minor spelling and rephrased a few things

@@anony-missy Absolutely agreed!! The reason I like hamilton so much is that every song leads into the next and anyone can ust listen to the soundtrack and understand the entire musical. I wish more musicals did that, or had tracks for the dialogue. It sucks that theres no way to know what all of the dialogue says since its just from someones phone camera likely (which im still greatful for any illegal musical recording) More musicals and plays in general really SHOULD have a high quality recording of their productions, since even in person one might not be able to understand what was said. @@Moth-Bells Yeah it’s way easier to figure out what’s going on in cast albums where basically the entire musical is sung through. It’s even nice when they at least include some bits of dialogue in the songs to help keep everyone listening oriented as to what’s happening in the story. I also hope they start releasing more professionally recorded versions of plays and musicals. The fear seems to be that having a proshot means that no one will want to see it anymore. But I’d think the benefits of exposing a new audience to your show and creating future fans for potential revivals or even just amateur productions, as well as just bringing in ongoing revenue after the show closes seems like it would be worth it in the long run. Hopefully that becomes more standard in the future. Until then I’m also grateful for the recordings we have, both legal and illegal.

When Anne was executed, Henry actually hired a very experienced swordsman to do the deed, at least giving her a quick death, which was good because most executions by beheading at the time were... not. Katherine Howard later would take several swings to get the deed done because she was not afforded this "luxury". 2. Perhaps I should do a little bit of my own back story before this comment... for years, I have participated in the arts, including musical theater (on stage, in the pit, musical directing, and directing) .. and, in addition, my day job is teaching music Pre-K throught 8th, band, chorus, and musicals. To say the least... I eat, sleep, and breathe this stuff. Now, my comment... I SO agree with you! My feeling about general music is that I am not under the ridiculous assumption that every student I teach is going to go on to being this fantastic performer (or even a so so performer). No. I do understand, though music is very important, only a small handful of people that I teach will go on and have any type of musical performance in their future. But they will ALL end up experiencing music appreciation on practically daily basis. I think this musical goes to illustrate 3 of the most common aspects of music appreciation: Popular Music Live Music Performance (and) Musicals (opera, stories, or lessons told/taught with the help of music) The problem with the last 2 is that it's very expensive and it's not always available for people to partake of

I love all of the cast - UK and Broadway: I really recommend checking out both versions - Andrea Macasaet's vocals and mannerisms brought a similar but oddly distinct vibe to her performance. Anne Boleyn is literally the only name of the Queens I knew before going down the Six Musical rabbit hole and doing more research on the Queens. I love that CA's daughter ends up being Bloody Mary and AB's daughter is Queen Elizabeth I and how they essentially had a massive rivalry during their time. Also, that JS is the only one to give Henry his son, and yet his daughters from his previous two wives ruled longer and were more influential than her son.

Many Scholars think she wasn't "the temptress" Henry wanted to sleep with her (like her sister) but she didn't want to. Obviously, she couldn't say "no" to the king. Instead she said she wanted to be chaste foe her husband. Henry reportedly moved her in to change her mind and when that also didn't work, he rearranged the church, divorced his faithful wife and married Bolyn. He did keep his affair with her sister, and when he got tired of Anne, he had rumors made up about her and cut off her head. Historical revision comes in because for the reign of Henry, Mary and Elizabeth it was against the law to speak ill of the king. So the wives were subsequently blamed and shamed for their fates

The fact they went with the stereotypical "Harlot" portrayal of Anne rather than the historical version pains me, especially since people making the show were history experts so I'm sure they knew better. I definitely suggest reading up on the actual Anne. When Henry first pursued her she was 19-25, while he was in his 30s. She was pulled into a no win relationship by a tyrant, without really any good options, and the "charges" she was executed for are believed to be entirely false and made up by Henry so he could kill her and get rid of her since she didn't bear a son. He was ready to move on to the next woman and wanted her gone. The actual Anne wasn't a sassy temptress. She was unpopular with the people from the start so lots of nasty rumors mischaracterizing her were around the entire time and only got worse after she was killed. To tell you how badly she is mischaracterized here, most of the versions like this are based on the accounts of a man who absolutely hated her, who only met her once. All the stories about her being a vain temptress were made up by people who hated her. She actually didn't want to be Henry's mistress. She tried to decline his advances and lose his attention, but you don't get go tell the king no. If anything she's a victim, through and through, who made the most of her situation. As a queen she was noted for being charitable, including wanting the money from monasteries being dissolved to go towards building schools and hospitals. Almost every piece of popular media about her is a continuation of a several centuries long character assassination for the sake of making things more "entertaining".
