A few things about this movie. The filmmakers wanted to make a war movie in LA, not necessarily an alien invasion movie. But, since there's no military force on Earth that could actually do it, they went with aliens. Second, they wanted to make it from the perspective of a squad of Marines trying to survive in a city overrun by aliens and finding a way to succeed. You're not seeing things from the point of view of high ranking leaders or scientists trying to come up with a grand strategy or finding a weakness. You're in the thick of the fighting. And finally, too many people make the assumption that alien military technology and tactics would be ridiculously too advanced. But that doesn't necessarily have to be the case. I love this movie. My only complaints are that a couple of characters are a little cliche, and the aliens coming to steal our water was stupid.
@Jarekx20079 ай бұрын
There's simply no way you'd be able to traverse the vast distances required in space without having ridiculously advanced technology compared to ours. To give you an idea, light takes ~12 minutes on average to make it to Mars, our current manned mission objective. It takes light 4.246 YEARS to reach Proxima Centauri, the closest star to our own.
@donaldwert71379 ай бұрын
Yeah, the idea that there's some kind of resource on Earth that couldn't be found more abundantly elsewhere, without fighting for it, strikes me as pretty lame. A ship capable of crossing interstellar space would almost certainly be able to refine raw materials from comets, asteroids, etc. Humans as food has some merit, but is seldom presented.

I recall reading that Aaron Eckhardt traveled with some Marines in Afghanistan to prepare for the role and that the director sought to make it a soldier's story, rather than a regular tech-driven sci-fi. That is why the dialogue is the way it is -- they are soldiers. I think a lot of people didn't get this movie, but the hand-held camera filming effects, the close ups of the shell casings hitting the ground, and the soldiers agony at getting hit really put the audience in the fight. So what if there are cliches. I think the movie is underrated.
@rcslyman89292 ай бұрын
It is underrated. And deserved a hell of a lot more attention than it got, because tell you what. If an enemy ever did get a beachhead here, whether terrestrial, extra, or otherwise, Marines would absolutely be leading that counteroffensive charge. We had Transformers, Battleship, and... you know, I can't really remember a good Army movie from around then. Regardless, this was a Devil Dog movie. It, and they, deserved a hell of a lot better release.
@Arcturus5722 ай бұрын
And the things that Arron did, from the hunted eyes watching the aircraft, to the shaking of the hands after getting back on the bus, just show that he did real research, and worked with the people who were really "in the suck" of battle, and it shows in every move he makes while doing this character. And later, when he's having the confrontation with the brother of his former company member, reciting the SSN's of each soldier killed under his command, shows the real guilt a true NCO would have that cared for his men... That scene alone hit me in the feels, having grown up around the military.
