One of the best subversions in horror movie history. Anyone would’ve thought that Paul was going to be a main character, and instead he receives the most brutal death early on.

They went all-out with this sequence, and it was a very loud announcement that this was gonna be a whole lot rougher a ride than the 1950s original. The hermit didn't just disappear - he got *cored out* by the miniature Blob. Having increased its mass by about 20 times from that alone, it then promptly snuck in and ambushed the would-be protagonist. Who was then **digested alive** right in front of his girlfriend. Frank Darabont actually helped write this movie. He later would help write Shawshank Redemption, the Green Mile and The Mist, all fantastic Stephen King adaptations, as well as produce the Walking Dead series. It's a major reason why this version of The Blob was written pretty well, particularly this opening scene. Putting out the All-American clean-cut kid as the protagonist and *brutally* killing him off, right off the bat? Then making the *greaser* the primary protagonist? That was a daring move. So was (later) tossing Infant Immortality right out the window.

Came home one night, I think I was 13, this was on TV at like 11pm, I was just on top of the moon watching it.

Poor Paul...i guess the director did here the joke of the year with audience making them believe Paul is the main protagonist of the movie...until that scene lol

I saw that actor Donovan Leach at the Roxy in Hollywood a few years back playing the lead in Hedwig and the Angry Inch’, he has the most beautiful, powerful voice.

The blob begins consuming the blob? See, this is why all monsters need brains - without them, they do stupid things, like eat themselves.

this has to be 1 of the most underrated films of all time and is up there with body snatchers for best remake the effects when this came out were light years ahead of anything else and I won't spoil it but the twist ending is truly terrifying how this film has disappeared almost without a trace is beyond me

It's almost as if there's a mysterious "blob" that just consumes humans.
