Years ago, I blacked out due to a minor, passing health issue. Walking through the hall at home, feeling a bit woozy, unstable. One second I'm conscious even if a bit foggy, the next I'm face down on the hardwood floor in a steadily spreading puddle of my own blood. When I lost consciousness, apparently my limp body just dropped like a sack of potatoes with my unprotected face catching most of my dead weight which somehow split my chin, busted both lips and crushed my nose. So, the opening shown in the clip here doesn't have the same impact on me now, with the above noted incident behind me, as it did when I first watched the movie as a new release. All those unconscious people scattered about the town, laid out on concrete sidewalks, asphalt streets, etc., and not a drop of blood to be seen. Still a great movie though, and a viscerally effective scene, conceptually.

The original film was made in 1964 and based on the John Wyndham book, The Midwich Cuckoos. It was actually made not far from what is now the Harry Potter Tour , in the village of Letchmore Heath just outside Watford UK. It starred George Sanders (particularly known as the voice of Shere Kahn in The Jungle Book cartoon) and a 'high priestess' of Hammer Horror movies, the beautiful Barbara Shelley. Somehow, filming it in black and white made it more disturbing and scary. Highly recommend it.
