As a Dutch man I'd give all credits to Taylor, there's no debate indeed. Peak doesn't matter, mvg proved the last years how difficult it is to stay at the top. Taylor did it for decades, that's insane.

Taylor is actually pretty wise and has a lot of interesting things to say about life as well as darts. As a player he could be a bit petty at times, but he was a breath of fresh air for darts and I'm really happy that he had such a great career.

If anything I'd say the standard has dropped since Taylor retired. Player's are winning tournaments with 98 averages and they seems to be no dominant player anymore. It was only 5 years ago he won his last Major at the matchplay in Blackpool. On the route to the title he played 5 former and future world champions in Gerwyn Price, Barny, M.V.G. Ady Lewis, and Peter Wright in the final. Taylor Averaged over 100 in 4 out of the 5 matches. Nobody got close to him. He hammered them all. This was a month before his 57th birthday and his final year as a professional. Head to head nobody even comes close. He simply has no peers and his records will never be beaten. The greatest British sportsman that's ever lived.

Watching Phil on TV while I was in England during the summer of 84 got me playing. I was a club manager on the Scluthorpe RAF base for the American Clubs. I still have my old Nodor board and Linda Batten 21 gram spring tip darts. Still use those darts.

Growing up in NZ with no telly, and darts not being rugby, id never heard of Taylor. I remember seeing Eric Bristow and Rob Lowe on my grandparents telly once when i was very young. Loved it. I used to practise round the clock, but on doubles. Never been bery good tho. So in the last few years, I've rekindled my love of the game, discovered Phil and been able to enjoy watching all his old games on youtube. Gotta say, that 2007(?) final against RVB is the best game I've ever watched.

I met a young Phil Taylor at the North American Open in Las Vegas Just after he won his first World Championship. I was new to the game and still learning my outs. I asked him why he shot an out the way he did and he explained. Nice guy. I learned a lot about outs chalking for Phil and the other pros at Tournaments

Dan Dawson is not correct to say his record against MvG was about 50-50 . He actually has a clear winning record against MvG (34-26), and even won 6 of their last 9 matches when MvG was at his peak and Taylor was 56/57.

Mvg was a kid when Taylor had most of his wins against him. A prime 2916 MVG would’ve beat Taylor more often than lot, just had more power scoring

Taylor averaged 111 in the 2009 European Championship and has a couple of other tournament averages over 108 whilst MvGs best tournament average is 107. Taylor averaged 105 in both 2008 and 2009 whilst MvGs best annual average is 103. Also Taylor having most of his wins vs MvG when MvG was a kid is not really true - Taylor won 6 of their last 9 matches.

I didn’t see Taylor in his prime but by all accounts he was still averaging around about his best at the end of his career and wasn’t winning anywhere near the amount of tournaments mvg was winning. Look at how MVG wiped the floor with him in the match play and made Taylor essentially spit his dummy out and quit, he knew he just couldn’t beat MVG at that time, 2016-17 mvg is the best player I’ve ever seen personally, and if you’d put mvg in Phil’s era against the players of the 90s mvg would have all those titles aswell, the competition was pretty poor, likes of Manley, Priestly etc, wouldn’t have got near mvg either

@@dogsbollocksgenius9480 Taylor wasn't averaging quite as much at the end of his career as at his 2008-2010 peak, but it was only a few points off (just over 100 at the end vs around 105 at his peak). MvG certainly had some dominating wins against Taylor in 2016-2017, but Taylor also thrashed MvG several times during this period as well, such as the 16-6 caning in the quarter final of the 2017 World Matchplay. Obviously MvG was much better than Taylor's 90s opponents like Priestley and Manley and would have dominated them, I never said otherwise.
