This song holds a special place in my heart. One day about age 9, I met my first friend (Pretty autistic kid as I was). I was playing in the neighbor's tree-house when all of a sudden, a pimpled teenage boy was choking me over the railing. Anyhow, rest was a bit of a blur but the dad saved me, yadda yadda. Mother organized a catch up/apology session with the teen boy (Jeff I suppose). Went over there, the mothers had tea and biscuits in the kitchen and they left us to make amends after a quick "Say you're sorry" introduction. So Jeff took me in the lounge and he was super excited to show me a recording of RAGE (Old Australian music TV show), got me to sit real close to the TV. I mean *real* close, which always made me uncomfortable because I always did as I was told and was fearful of going against grown-up warnings. He pressed play and instructed me to watch super carefully. So on comes this, My Name Is Mud. Sitting that close to the CRT TV was overwhelming enough, coupled with the distorted thwacking on the bass, weird vocals and the stink of teen boy creeping into my pores from the room I was having a fair old out of body experience. I heard Jeff doing something with his jacket by the door and kept trying to look, but he'd keep insisting that I had to watch! I'm going to miss it! So I did. And right after 2:44, he hit me on the head with an aluminium baseball bat. Beginning of a beautiful friendship where I'd get dumped at his place to sleep over while my mother went out playing poker machines four nights a week, or sent over on an errand to convince him that life was worth living when he was having one of his "dark" episodes. Anyway, nearing on 40 nowadays. Finally learned to love the song.

@averynonym7 жыл бұрын
Regardless of how anyone feels about Primus, this is some of the best songwriting I've ever heard, particularly the first verse. You get an introduction to the character, his derogatory nickname, the fact that his only prized possession are his shoes and it's written SO CONCISELY! It goes from a simple introduction to the conflict of the song in one line: 6 foot 2 and rude as hell, I gotta get him in the ground before he starts to smell...my name is Mud. When I first heard it I was stunned! Now his name and story is even sadder and darker because Mud has gone from a name that he was given to now becoming an metaphor for the fact that he has now not only dirtied his name but also his reputation, or what was left of it. Then it makes you wonder, what's in a name? Is our destiny predetermined by the names others give us or do we learn to adopt that title and it subsequently changes us to become our future? Powerful stuff.

I can't overstate the actual raw genius this song utilizes to be one of the most original creations of all time. The bass cords, the darkness it brings that takes you on ride with the song, and the lyrics which tell not only a great cryptic story, but with clever wording the mental state of confusion, weariness, panic, and his own explanation for how the events went down and the small details of his life........the emotions are so easily relatable even if you didn't kill anybody. I got my pride.....I drink my wine.....I only drink the finest except I haven't turned a dime in several months.....or were it years?(mental state here.....this line was genius) We had our words, a common spat.....so I kissed him upside the cranium with an aluminum baseball bat He mentioned the man being rude as hell earlier. This was his attempt at justifying his actions, and showing in a brilliant lyrical way he attempted a non violent reaction to this man and by the end of the "words or spat" he decided to kill him for the offense. He has been poor and drinking lately so stressed out and ready to snap, hence why he overreacted.....and the lyrics are pure story of his deed and burying him, and the justification of it in some way(the man's rudeness, attempt at arguing it out, he only brings up the details of his recent life as further justification(poor and drinking wine) So damn brilliant

there's even small things like "call me Aloysius Devadander Abercrombie, that's long for Mud... so I've been told" that are seemingly random do link back to the story. if they fought before mud killed him, that could certainly be part of the argument. Mud seems to pretty obsessive over his name, and i could see him taking great offense to someone making fun of it by maybe making up some nonsense about it

Now after someone says that, you'll find an immediate reply saying that Primus is awesome and that the commenter is stupid, then afterwards there are people calling out the second guy for not being as big of a fan, and occasionally you'll get the Primus fan that says the Primus Sucks slogan is getting old.
