Officials obtain 'black box' from ship in Baltimore bridge crash

Federal safety officials revealed crew calls for help on Wednesday (March 27) after retrieving the "black box" data recorder of the cargo freighter that knocked down a highway bridge over Baltimore Harbour, coming as divers recovered the bodies of two workers whose vehicle plunged in the water as the bridge collapsed.

Depends on if the company was actually at fault or not, and from the information we have been able to obtain as on now it looks like a freak accident. If the ship lost power without any sort of failure or anything of that nature then it's just a freak accident that the city of Baltimore will have to cover because it's a city structure that serves thousands and thousands of people per day and you can't make a company pay for damages for something that would have been completely out of their control. Now if the ship lost power due to a failure which the government can prove the company knew about then they could be on the hook for coving the damage cost.

Fed rebuilds the bridge asap, and then insurance companies for the ship will be in litigation for years to pay for it down the line

@@atomic_hok Exactly. It's also Baltimore Ports policies and such that sank this. Many bay-style or inlet ports around the world require the use of tugs for this reason. A fail safe to make sure no Tanker or Cargo ship holding chem products losses control and hits a structure like this. Imagine if it was a tanker, or those cargo containers on the front has EVs or reactive/explosive, flammable, corrosive, or highly toxic chemicals. This could have been even worse and it's hopefully a wake-up call to ports around the world to hire and buy more tug boats. The company could almost argue that no matter what it is very much a failure of the government and the port authorities to manage the port and it's waters in a safe and secure way. So unless they find malicious intent (extremely unlikely), then chances are the tax payers are footin the bill and should advocate for more oversight and tugs at the port in the future.

These company’s should be held responsible to risk to the public and repairs, not us having to pay for infrastructure upgrades. If they can’t safely pilot a boat or keep it in working condition, they shouldent be in our waters.

Divert some or most of your attention to the Harbour Master and his standing orders. This will answer more question than a black box on the ship. I have been a Master in the marine industry for many years, and I know more than you do. Something has a strong stench to it, and getting the right information from the right sources is paramount. Talk to people within the industry and get direction from them, this is beyond your kknowledge.

Boats that big have tons of momentum because of how heavy they are and can't stop on a dime. No matter how hard you hit the breaks they will keep going for some time. That big black puff of smoke you can see in the video of the crash is them cranking on the emergency generator HARD to try and steer/brake away. They had about 4 minutes from losing power the first time, to crashing into the bridge. In that time, they called emergency crews to stop traffic (which they did), dropped anchor, tried desperately to avoid the bridge, even called tug boats to help but there was just no time. This was not the crew's fault.

Super tankers need around 10 miles to come to full stop. Momentum is involved. It maybe a human error. Or, an electro mechanical error. Trouble is , all mechanical and electrical errors are governed by the humans that designed , invented and implemented them in to human society. At the moment you can’t blame the machines. They exploded this bridge because they want farmers to suffer for not receiving necessary supplies for their farming. A ship hitting a bridge can cause some damages, but not the collapse of entire bridge made of béton and heavy metals. Also there are four corners of the bridge that were collapsed, which had nothing to do with the ship. Some footages show that the collapse happened before the hit. This so called accident is as suspicious as the fire in Maui. Something is not right and they are not telling people the truth.
