This song is so powerful, raw, and real. T- Boz did exactly as they said and "got the message across without seeming like we were preaching." It also dispelled the myth back then that you couldn't get HIV/AIDS from a woman and the fact that they showed a white, heterosexual couple with the disease shows that it wasn't just a "gay and/or African American only" disease. The purpose of rap and hip hop is to spread awareness of social issues and give lessons as well as being entertainment. They did a great job.

Chasing Waterfalls" is TLC's way of expressing how people chase intangible dreams with no thought of the consequences. The first verse is talking about an inner city mother-and-son relationship. He is chasing "waterfalls" (money and respect by dealing drugs), but his mother knows this cannot end well. The second verse deals with a man's relationship with a woman. His "waterfall" is casual sex - he has a "natural obsession for temptation." This could mean he is cheating on someone or the woman he is seeing is cheating on someone. Either way, he contracts HIV and dies ("three letters took him to his final resting place"). TLC were big on AIDS awareness - Left Eye would often wear condoms attached to her clothes and in her glasses to promote safe sex.

I think metaphorically this song is about not taking risks so fast, especially when you don't know what you're getting into. The lakes and rivers is safety, and the waterfalls are risks. Like that old saying think before you act, that's the same for living in extremes, the more you get in to it, the more it'll cost you your life. @Kiba694203 жыл бұрын
I was 12 when i got my TLC album. I knew what this song meant, its pretty clear in its verbage. I think what hits harder now is fully understanding the implications(side effects) of the stories and everyone it effects and how. Wisdom over knowledge in this situation, its pretty clear the subjects they are talking about, the actual impacts on life around the stories is something you have to actually live to understand. I grew up a bad kid, got into a lot of trouble and saw my parents frustration and sadness. Two people i knew got shot and killed at that time, one died in jail. Later on two more got dead living the game... that i had left by that point. Its just fucking sad. Then you have AIDS and it was something that even 12 year old me knew about, from school and the news. The AIDS epidemic was brutal back then, i met someone years back that got it from being drugged and raped. Luckily hes still around thanks to advancements in medicine but... fuck man. So many people died. Of course, another big factor in knowing about the AIDS part was that Forest Gump also came out in the same year.

Mom and dad are goin' out for the evening And you're stuck inside the house all alone That's when you decided it might be fun to harass someone Dial a random number up on your telephone You ask if their refrigerator is running Then you tell 'em they should go out and catch it Buddy, if they ever figured out where you were callin' 'em from They'd come and bust your head right in with a ratchet Listen to me Don't go makin' phony calls Please stick to the seven-digit numbers you're used to I know that you think it's funny drivin' folks up the wall But it's really gettin' old fast Little Melvin has a natural obsession Askin' for Prince Albert in a can He gets a kick each time he makes a collect call To some guy he doesn't know who lives in Japan He's callin' strangers up at three in the morning Gives 'em pizza pie delivery at four He won't be laughin when they're tracin' his line One day the phone police will be there at his door Yo, hear me Don't go makin' phony calls

I think people tend to overlook at how monumental this song/video was and is. Not only for the message but the overall impact it made when it premiered. TLC as a group brought urban and social awareness to the forefront of pop culture at a time when soceity was plagued by stigma. They literally made the world stop and pay attention to the relevance of African American youth and the hiv/aids epidemic. No female group has ever dominated in the many ways TLC has. They were the first.

Tee Mee was thinking this after just watching. haven't seen this since it was on MTV. there's really nothing anymore like this in the rap and rnb genres. it's like they really did this song for the people/fans, not for themselves so fans just buy their music. on a side note, I really think after 9/11 all this went away. we became scared as a nation and focus is more on ourselves. making sure we're secure at the price of dismissing our community and surroundings. the 90's weren't perfect, but it was on a decent track for community until it was completely derailed in 2001. lots of things changed, and even though it's not a sharp line, there's a major split from music pre and post 9/11. more than the usual contemporary progression. genuine useful messages in a song are a sad rarity these days. damn.

Laurie Smith I thought it was STD since HIV is a virus that can be treated before AIDS
@lauriesmith45756 жыл бұрын
It could be treated, but not if the person didn't know/refused to admit they had it, and in the '90s, it was still kind of taboo to admit to having it, especially if you were a straight male (ie, it was the 'homosexual disease'). None of the other diseases were an immediate death sentence like AIDS was back when this song came out. Back in the '90s, especially '95 when the song came out, HIV itself was a death sentence. I found a small article from the CDC back from 2003, that mentions they're talking about AIDS: "TLC's 1995 hit "Waterfalls" also addressed the danger of HIV." www.thebody.com/content/art28606.html

TLC is an iconic girl group from the 90s. Their music is as poignant and relevant today as the day it was first released. Love them. ♥ 🎶 🎤 🎹

"Dreams are hopeless aspirations, in hopes of coming true, believe in yourself, the rest is up to me and you." These lyrics that Lisa sang were powerful they were engraved on her casket on the day of her funeral .. May she rest in peace.
@MrMaddox573 жыл бұрын
thanks for this. The only one who can make your dreams come true is YOU. It is the choices your make in life. It is up to YOU. TLC changed my life, and I grew up with them as a kid. I have found, over and over and over again, in life, the only vehicle of change for one's dreams is YOU. And there are all sorts of ways to do it, even if you fail, over and over. It is NEVER too late to take action. Never.

3:46 [Verse 3: Left Eye] Come on! I seen a rainbow yesterday, but too many storms Have come and gone, leaving a trace of not one God-given ray Is it because my life is ten shades of gray, I pray All ten fade away, seldom praise Him for the sunny days And like His promise is true, only my faith can undo The many chances I blew to bring my life to anew Clear blue and unconditional skies Have dried the tears from my eyes, no more lonely cries My only bleeding hope is for the folk who can't cope With such an endurin' pain that it keeps 'em in the pourin' rain Who's to blame for tooting 'caine into your own vein? What a shame, you shoot and aim for someone else's brain You claim the insane, and name this day in time For falling prey to crime I say the system's got you victim to your own mind Dreams are hopeless aspirations in hopes of coming true Believe in yourself, the rest is up to me and you

It’s a real bummer that they always cut Lisa’s rap out of the radio edit. It’s probably for time restrictions. But l really wish that they left it in. Because it’s part of the song.
