So next time remember this one thing. Get a good comalong, it will be your friend. I work on these a lot. I use a harbor freight lift cart and a comealong.

Been there done that , ones I've ran from the dealer that were " field ready " weren't , ever ready ! But when me and the boss overhauled his baler it worked so good it wouldn't bale hay that wasn't ready . I wish I could remember the model but it was a new holland.

After haying season I pressure wash everything, been doing it for years then I inspect and service it before putting it away for the year, a clean baler operates so much better than one that has never been cleaned and full of crap, grease chunks and dirt

Your situation sounds familiar. I paid the local dealer to have my New Holland square baler made "field ready". Within the first couple minutes of use, it was obvious that it wasn't fixed. When I checked the dimensions with the owners manual, nothing was in spec on the knotters so I ended up adjusting it myself. I was not a happy camper. Sometimes your better off to just do the work yourself.

Unless you have hay to bale there is no way to know if the baler is " field ready " !!!! That you should know.

We had an older one that we used to bale hay with for a few years. 3000 bales or more a year. Biggest problem we had with ours was the brake on the knotter would slip occasionally. Ours was a Super 66, so it was not as new as yours. Never had the plunger out. If we were out in the fields and left it overnight, we tossed a bale over the knotters. I think it missed about 100 bales a year. Had the long chutes on it, with a hitch for a wagon. That was my job, the wagon loader. 80 bales on each of 2 wagons, depending on how far we were from the barn. About 20 minutes to load a wagon.

I still have a Super 66. I haven't used it for years because it broke a needle. I tried to get it welded but that didn't last long. I have spend many hours under that one mending chains. When it worked it was ok but all the chains should have been replaced beside the needle of cause. I could have got a new needle for about A$450 a few years back but I decided to buy a NH281 for A$3000 in stead. That is starting to need maintenance as well but it is still much better. If any body needs parts for a NH Super 66 or wants a repareble but not currently working bailer then it is for sale. I even have the books for it. I don't have that for my 281.

I pressure wash all my equipment regularly including balers and have had better reliability than before I started washing. Always grease equipment after washing or using it for a day so bearings don’t sit dry

Great video! I agree that the idea of all this is far worse than the actual job! I have yet to do this on my 273, and I have a squeaky mouse that no amount of spray, lubricant or otherwise can overcome; it squeaks consistently at full pull back(plunger fully to the front of the baler). Otherwise it's a great baler, consistently bales hay. Found out the hard way 2 years ago that my plunger safety interupt was frozen. (had to replace both needles and the hoop!) and had a real rough start to last spring's baling only to discover using last years twine is a bad idea. Replaced the twine and ran 330 bales without a hitch.

@@ruedaricardo Clean and prep all surfaces very well. If re-installing components, hit them with a little Emory cloth or something to remove any grit or rust scale.

Sir, I do know from over sixty years ago that on the B45/47 the clearance between the ledger plate and the ram knife should be about the thickness of a cigarette card, (if you can find one now) . Also if you can keep them both sharp it makes life a lot easier if there are a few lumps in the swath. I always found that if it was missing a few knots,ie no more than one or two in two hundred bales then there was a good incentive to learn all about the knotters and string tension etc .

I wound say pressure wash it the grease it before putting it up. When baling, leave to cover over the knitters open and let as much trash fly out as possible. I always see people on KZbin baling with the cover closed.

Thats one way of describing them. I prefer a marvel of engineering brilliance 😀 Just the knotters alone, tie a knot, virtually guaranteed to work, in a split second. The timing to get all this working without "eating itself" is nothing short of amazing.

Guys and gals, please do not work on these knives without gloves on. I gapped my left hand wide wide open on one new Holland 273. Had just gotten done changing the lower roller and since the plunger was out I went ahead and polished the edge up real sharp with a flapper and then a fine file. All I had left to do was put the guard back on the side of the plunger. When tightening the bolts my wrench slipped and the blood went on everything. Missed the blue lines in the wrist by only a few millimeters. Could have been worser. Wear some gloves and protect yourselves

No plunger face extensions ??? They make wire twisting/knot tying a lot easier ! Make sure your wire/twine guides are good !

I'd say one pressure wash every 50 years should be fine.. Just add a lot of grease after your done and throw some chain oil on the chains.

Wash mine fairly often with no issues. You just have to use your brain and not hammer the water into the bearings and such. Clean machine usually treats you well.
