Offroad Beach Camping in Long Island

A very fun weekend of camping and fishing directly on the beach! - a new experience for all of us! As always we had a fun time together and really enjoyed our time there. We will definitely be back! In order to do this you have to buy the proper 4x4 Fishing Permit in the winter before the season starts. Your permit is good for just the following season. Nice set up. I gotta do this. I live on the island. Never got the 4x4 pass tho. Need to get a bed tent too. Maybe one day. Were u even checked if u had the permit? This video has the feel of the old home videos made back in the day lol nice truck too

You have to try it! We specifically didn’t get checked, but if you arrive any time midday on a weekend they check you as you come in. Haha well thank you!

Did the officers bother you for having an awning? It says in the permit guide that portable shelters and tents are not allowed. Planning to get a smittybilt overlander xl if I can use it at gilgo beach

No they didn’t, we weren’t bothered at all. No comments or problems with anything three had setup. Yeah it does say that but at Gilgo they don’t seem to be too strict. I think you would be totally fine with a rooftent like that there.

Hey, awesome video. I had a question. I'd like to take my jeep onto the beach. Is there a permit you suggest getting for the daytime we would like to enjoy the water and waves. No surfing or fishing, not too sure about camping with a fussy 1 year old baby. I'd like to just do a daytime beach trip with the Jeep and family. Thanks

Hey, thank you. I think the 4x4 Fishing permit would still be the best option for you. The rules at Gilgo beach were very relaxed. As long as you had the required things according to the permit you could come and just hang out. That’s why we got the permit, we didn’t really have much intention for doing any fishing at all. We just had to bring our fishing stuff to abide by the permit rules. There isn’t really a permit to just have beach access, I know there’s a fishing permit, surfing, stargazing. We knew people that had the 4x4 fishing permit and used it to hangout and camp so that’s why we got it.

Sadly I don’t think New York does day permits, I think other places like North Carolina offer short length passes that you don’t have to buy far in advance. I haven’t looked into it much though.

They don’t really enforce the rules, as long as you don’t leave a mess or get crazy or have a lot of people in regular tents, they seem to leave you alone, atleast at Gilgo
