The world's first plug-in hybrid crossover is now offered in America.
The Outlander PHEV represents a fusion of the EV technologies developed by Mitsubishi for models such as the i-MiEV, S-AWC technologies honed from the Lancer Evolution, and SUV know-how gained from the Montero. The highlight of the all-new Outlander PHEV is the use of Mitsubishi's sophisticated PHEV system. It uses two full-time, high-output electric motors separately mounted at the front and rear axles to instantly supply torque on demand for incredibly responsive performance with an agile all-wheel drive. This integrated control system delivers incredible power and control. By optimally managing Active Yaw Control (AYC), Anti-lock braking system (ABS) and Active Stability Control (ASC) with Traction Control (TCL) - which now offers enhanced traction on all road conditions - it brings out the full potential of Twin Motor S-AWC without compromising safety, comfort or fuel efficiency. When desired, the driver can press the Twin-Motor 4WD LOCK button to simulate locking of a center differential and optimally distribute torque to all four wheels for improved traction and stability.

I take my 2014 Mitsi PHEV off road towing 3000lb trailer, it runs on Bf K2 AT's Tyres for better ride, handling and traction.When In tricky traction situations towing 3000lb trailer I always use the charge mode so the IC engine is running before losing traction, This enables AWD system to apply greater torque and traction than just using it in EV mode. The PHEV will go anywhere our 2011 3.7 Jeep Wrangler will go while towing, The best thing when towing is when going down long hills and using full regenerative breaking B5 you can fully recharge in only few miles ie. In 4 -6 miles on full regen B5 you can be putting back 30 kWh into the batteries giving 30 mile + EV range FREE ; )

Hi Henry , nice to read that you have positive experience with the 4wd system of the PHEV ! Most reactions are negative, see the roller tests. I drive a Mitsubishi Pajero 3500 V6 with superselect 4wd, center diff lock and 100% rear diff lock, BFG allterrain 31,5x10R15. Excellent car, have it since 1999, very reliable. I am thinking about buying an Outlander PHEV because of better fuel economics, and I am interested in modern electro driveline. But I want a car that can manage sandy and muddy roads as well (not extreme). How does your PHEV perform on sandy/muddy dirt-roads ? Does your rear axle has plenty traction ? Which size BFG all terrain do you have on your car ? I think 225/70R16 will fit nice ? Maybe the larger 225/75R16 fits on the same rim, but I do not know if there is enough space for that size in the front ? Mitsubishi-Netherlands does not recommend larger tyres on the PHEV ! You like regenerative breaking, and that the battery is fast charged going downhill. But when the battery is "halfway downhill" full-charged, the regenerative breaking does not work any more , and you have only the break-pads to slow the car down. Am I correct ? Thanking you beforehand for your help and advise !

What kind of battery cooling system does this thing have? I thought it was air cooled? If so, forcing 30kwh into a battery in a few minutes cant be good, especially without liquid cooling for the battery. I hope yours is a lease.

What I have seen in my phev is that till 15kmh aprox the thing is a dog. After that it flies, so going slow on sand is impossible. You must keep the momentum if not you are stuck

There is a very easy way to keep the motor on, and use the full capacity of the elctric motor, as in this case the limiting factor is actually the battery - press Sport mode :) I t will force the ICE toi stay on and the power will be coming from the generator. Also, this is not a 4x4 offroad prepared vehicle, always keep some momentum in the car on sand...

It is not clear from the video if you have Charge button enabled or not. It will have better performance with it enabled. I have been stuck in the snow several times with the same "click-no-movement" effect several times. My experience is that starting the ICE needs power from the bateries resulting in an overload condition where the ICE haults and power to the electric engines is cut off. Pushing charge will start the ICE when you have spare power awailable and give you more power and torque on the wheels when you push the accellerator. Pushing charge have helped me out of a stuck situation many times! the car is still not a true off-roader - but it is very good at speed on ice and snow roads.

@@OVER-bENGINEERED thanks for the advice. I have 2014 outlander phev. I know where the traction control button is and the 4WD lock button is. But in the video they have the S-AWC On or OFF? Where do you switch that on or off? or is the SAWC equivalent to activating the "4WD LOCK"?

When they are driving through the sand, i don't think your suppose too pause, drive, then pause again. I seen videos of this vehicle going through 2 foot tall snow that was better but they were not going as slow as these guys are in the sand. Everyone knows even in mud you have to go on a consistent speed not just go through it like your trying to find parking at Costco...i don't believe this video. It did pretty good in the beginning

The momentum is not enough to manage "climb" in sand. Some math and physics calculations show that the total force from motors are 7664 N. A "barrier" to climp for all 4 wheel that is 3cm high requier all that fores to manage car to move. This is seen at at 1:35, wheels is more then 3 cm down in sand, and to get it moving the car have to climb this 3 cm "sand barrier". Angle to climb for the wheel to get over the sand barrier in front of the wheels is above the 23 degress climb that the car can do. There is just not enough force from the engines momentum to manage climb that "obstacle" from sand. Other ICE-cars have the momentum thru their transmitions.
@OVER-bENGINEERED

tucsonor I might propose the difference here is having a torque converter slipping allowing the ICE to spin up to speed in a conventional vehicle, vs an eCVT like this that can’t propel the wheels at zero ground speed, it must pull itself out on electric motor power alone and it seems to hit an amperage/time limit before it pulls itself free. This is why the PHEV can kick ass one it’s moving but gets stuck while starting from a dead stop.
@toyotaprius79
@toyotaprius79 6 жыл бұрын
Never thought I'd see that get stuck like that. Although, even if it's using two 80 bhp electric motors, there isn't all that much information on them other than that they're uprated versions found in the i-MiEV. One would guess that they're physically more well rounded for everyday running than stand still starts, despite their inherent instant torque. Motors that are more longitudinal have that torque, those that are taller can run at lower rpms at higher speeds with better efficiency. Even with two of them, without any momentum and all that weight it's enough to ''stall'' them.

Why you try offroad in EV mode? Parallel Hybrid Mode is what you need when offroading, read user manual…
@reivanen
@reivanen 28 күн бұрын
no, it's series hybrid. Outlander does not use parallel below 60kph. The issue is that the small battery cannot give out as much power as the electric motors can consume unless it is fully charged and cool. So you need the generator to provide the power.

I took my 2018 phev into sand yesterday at Whalers way near port Lincoln. 25% battery life and found motors had no power to pull me out. Engine cuts in but still no spin from tyres. Too much weight and traction. Only thing to do was drive backwards. Maybe much lower geared as no trouble in reverse. Slightly disappointed as diesel version would have the torque necessary to overcome sand driving

A very road biased system for sure. I'm confident Mitsubishi has an undefeatable Traction control simply because the wheels don't seem to spin that much - probably to protect the electric motors.

I can tell you what’s going wrong here. This car has an eCVT, at zero wheel speed and low speed the ICE and is motor generator can’t be coupled with the second motor generator and gearbox to drive the axles directly. ECVT vehicles only start and move at low speed on electric power from the second motor generator. The torque demand in the sand is too high and exceeds the power capability of the EV drive (battery max discharge current is probably the limiting factor) since most PHEVs have anemic EV systems. The PHEV shuts down when power demand is exceeded for more than what it would take to roll out fast from a red light. Hope this makes sense. Early Prius had a similar issue not being able to reverse up steep hills.

Traction control only helps certain situations. Some situations you need wheel speed and traction control limits wheel speed and sends a bit to each wheel to find traction... doesn’t help when no wheels individually had traction so you shut it off you give all the wheels some spin speed and traction.

It’s because it’s a JATCO CVT TRANSMISSION. The Murano and Pathfinder do the same thing. So do most Subaru CVT transmissions. CVT transmissions can’t put torque down properly like a regular steptronic transmission. When he gets stuck and NO wheels are spinning, you can hear a high pitched squeal. That’s the belts in the CVT slipping instead of turning the wheels. Tires have nothing to do with it. If it were the tires traction, then they would be spinning. One main reason Toyota for the new generation RAV4 switched back to a regular automatic. CVT’s are NO GOOD off road. Love your videos, btw. Loved the one with the highlander. What is up with that horrible AWD system?!? Toyota, Nissan, and apparently Mitsubishi now too, need to look at Honda with their CVT + AWD system. Has none of these issues. It can still put power down to the wheels. I believe the belts and gears in the Honda CVT are made purely from metal, NO METAL LINED RUBBER BELTS that slip and slide everywhere destroying the transmission.

Outlander PHEV has no CVT. They used very interesting solution here. Read about it. Outlander is a complex car. Boyz in the movie do not understand the tech behind it. They rely on the electric motors only. They ignored 120HP, 2.0L ICE engine, working as a generator. You would not stuck in this situation if you would use 4WD LOCK mode with CHARGE button *ON* . (similar behaviour as towing the trailer when the *generator* is constantly toping up the batteries while supporting the two electric motors and the ICE rotates front wheels - everything is in the manual) I own 2020 Outlander PHEV here in Iceland, Europe. It is a car one of its kind. Not a straight forward vehicle. Requires learning to reach its full potential. There is 4 separate synchronised motors working in this car with the final 224horsepower output. 2019 version is upgraded in Europe. Stronger 94hp electric motor was added to the rear axel (same 81hp in the front). 4cylinder petrol engine was upgraded to 2.4L resulting in the 133hp output. I am not sure if the generator was upgraded but its power is up to 95hp. SPORT mode was added: by pressing the SPORT button the 4 wheel drive is distributed equally 50-50, the throttle response is more sensitive, all available power from electric motors and generator is being used simultaneously with ICE on top of that (8.6s to 100km/h). All roller test or sand tests would be like a walk in a park with either SPORT mode ON (2019 version and up) or with the *LOCK/AWD* ON during the *CHARGE MODE* ON (in all versions of the car).

....sorry,no transmission / clutch in this car. It is driven electric. When the accupack is empty the 2.0 petrol engine works as a generator. Above ca 80 km/h the engine is in price-direct . That 's motor and diff.are locked together.
