I remember a trailer an uncle of mine had built out of an 8” truck bed, after cutting the frame just behind the front control arms mounting points, then bent the frame ends in to weld a ball hitch to and tongue jack. He left the drive axle an brakes in place, while mounting a HD 24 volt starter motor off a Cummins engine, with a place underneath the bed for 4, 6 volt deep cycle batteries. All wired up with heavy cables and a forward and reverse controller switch in the tow vehicles cab. So the trailer actually had a drive axle to help whenever the truck towing it would bog down in sand or mud!! In the bed/trailer he also had a very nice truck camper set in place, that he could tag along with the truck camper sitting in the truck he used to tow with. That happened to be an International 8’ bed reg cab he bought off a local fire department! That was incredibly heavy duty 4x4, powered by a 392/4 brl V8, with a 5 speed low hole transmission. He used all the time on his hunting trips with his buddies, from R.I., to Maine, way up in the Allagash Wilderness, where they would all go up to a bunkhouse with power. The last I seen of his build was rotting away over on his property after his death. I believe it was all scraped? I wish there were pictures of it when it looked very cool!

Ok here’s an old Army trick to use your winch when there’s nothing to hook on to. Sand/mud all around and you are stuck, with nothing solid around to throw a strap around? All you need to do is hook on to your spare tire, then bury it some distance ahead and use that as an anchor.

Good basic info! I would add 1) DO NOT GO OFF ROAD without a fully articulating hitch/coupler ( a lot of "off road" trailers come with ball couplers) 2) in rocky train, needed ground clearance can be lost when airing down too much and 3) you will need low range while towing over sections of trail that you've climbed in 4 HI without a trailer

Do you travel any tips for turning a camper trailer around on a narrow dirt road that has become too difficult to continue?

Unhook, move things by hand, if you can't get the trailer around the car by hand or drive around the trailer, use a winch and pulley set up to pull the trailer further out of the way. If you can't turn the car around, you shouldn't be turning around. If you can't get your car around, hope you have a front end hitch. If you don't, goodluck.

Aannnnnndddd don’t tow a 6 tonne dual axle trailer on the beach with 79 series just powering it through tearing up tracks and anything else cause ya can’t drive but wanna take ya mouth breathing kids to the beach 😂 it’s a wonder why councils are shutting most tracks
