I live just off the river in south central chuckey. We slept thru the flood as we are higher up and we're astonished by the damage. Friends and neighbors lost everything, but the spirit and tenacity of the appalachian people overcame all difficulties. Jackson bridge was cleared and opened by farmers and residents using their own equipment. This allowed rescue and emergency staff into the cut off areas. Every church, many flooded, were selfless in their assistance to their neighbors. No one went without. County personnel and local agencies stepped up to take care of the populace. I may only be there in the summers, but my heart is in these hills.

None of us could know what was coming. I do blame FEMA for their pitying help. FEMA has limitations. In this case FEMA could help if you had floord insurance for your home, items destroyed, etc. Since this was a 1 in 200 years flood, pretty much no one considered a mud slide would happen with saturated land & forest debris. They had several hundred Freezer-type containers for the temporary storage of unidentified bodies/parts and, please, realized the numbers of persons who died are only those identified bodies. The unidentified bodies are not considered in the Death Toll.

I looked up to those mountains every day & felt a pride in my life. Those mountains will take care of you & will always be there for us. This evil we’re fighting was shown loud & clear with this tragedy. Woke a lot of folks up especially just how bad our government is. So even though it is still a tragedy, we can take something from it. We can only depend on ourselves. Us coming together has shown just what Americans will do & can do. Love & prayers to all out there. I pray each night for all of you.

Just why exactly should you not try to help yourself and your neighbor if you can, you make it sound like it's the governments fault that you/they had to do that and as far as help from Fema, you do realize that they were told to leave in some counties and also that there might have been militia who were threatening them so please blame your people for some of the issues. You should also be aware that N.C. does not contribute much to the GDP, so next time you see a Democrat say thank-you. I don't know what evil you are fighting that hasn't been there for decades. As far as blaming the government maybe take a hard look at what you are voting for, but I get it, maga people are not only blind but only know how to blame others.

Many videos showing cars & PU trucks that were SO compacted & wadded up into a little ball, they are now no more than 4 to 5 feet in diameter. Homes literally CRUSHED & BURIED beneath landslides & mudslides. Dozens of 10 TON boulders piled up in areas where they never were before. Huge swaths of hills & mountains that gave way & slid down into valleys & hollers, taking everything in their path with them. Keep lookin' brother........because it truly is FAR WORSE than what is seen in this video.......and this is a great video by the way.

Great documentary of what happened, thank you. It is sad we will never know just how many lives were lost, how many injured and how many homes gone. The animals, from personal pets, farm livestock and land lost, that has impacted every level in society. Through all of this destruction we saw people come together and help each other, many racking up thousands in personal expenses by utilizing their heavy equipment, which are not cheap to do maintenance on, let alone to buy to begin with. Many of the SAR K9, have literally given their all to do a task they and their handlers are so dedicated in doing. Many families will eventually get “closure”, once dna & other testing is done, because of the sacrifices these teams have made. Sadly, many families will never know, as the mud, silt, sand and other debris will never be found. What is amazing is the way the communities supported each other. I wish my local community were so helpful. We saw volunteers come in from all over the world to help, and if they could not come in person, they donated. I pray that all of the channels covering this will continue, as, for some reason, main stream media certainly has not done justice to this. There should have been a better response from the federal government, but I’m not surprised that there is nothing but walls put in front of those seeking aid, with long wait times to find out if they even qualify for assistance. As a nation, we should do better for the people, not just this disaster, but all of them. Thank you to all who covered, helped and did whatever they could. Prayers to the survivors, as we head into the holiday season and the winter to follow. We cannot forget, they are dealing with a marathon, many with years ahead of them to rebuild, if they can. ❤🇺🇸❤️🙏❤️✝️👍 to all.

We're 10, let's say 11 weeks out and it's still so difficult to see how much the rivers rose and came together to cause this much destruction. We're over here in Etowah, I saw places flood that I never saw happen before. I think if it hadn't started raining Tuesday, then rained harder on Wednesday by the time Helene got here we might have been able to handle what hurricane dumped on us. But we were so saturated by the time the hurricane got here, the rivers were over capacity, the ground couldn't hold anymore water. When you live in a mountainous area you have the added hazard of mud or landslides and the whole of a hillside just washes down. The area will come back, it will heal and regrow with time, but a long time in some spots. The topography may have changed but the people will remain strong. Unfortunately the current (Biden) administration has seen it's way clear to donate a billion dollars aid to Africa for disaster relief. I guess Biden doesn't think WNC is a disaster area in need of relief aid?

I'd also like to see drone footage of the mudslides - there should be many, many, from what I've read.

bjharrison, you might be interested in TheGeoModels channel, with 10 half-hour videos; and Mark Huneycutt, who has climbed up the "path" of some debris flows.

Beautifully filmed though heartbreaking to see… I love the soundtrack - what is it? I lived in Black Mountain, Gerton and Asheville…. Absolutely loved those mountains, and really astounded by the warmth & generosity of people there. It’s quite unbelievable what happened. Luckily everyone I knew is ok, but I have heard some horror stories. I hope hey can recover, long old ahead. Thanks for ts documentation. I think you honored the place and the event, without sensationalism. Many love this place.

Thanks so much for watching and for the kind words. Definitely a long road ahead for everyone. I will try to remember to put the names of the song in the description later today when I get home. Thanks again for all you said

Although hurricane Helene was so devastating, I must admit I completely think the cinematography and the music are awesome! Wow the Appalachians are so beautiful! I pray these folks living out there will finally get the help they need from the new administration 🙏❤️

Thankyou for these Tell the Truth videos. Such a beautiful area to live, work & play. Such destruction from a few who want to own it all for their needs & the riches it may produce.

Tragedy by one storm that came and stalled over NC and Tennessee. 40 trillion gallons of water fell. The mountains became funnels, into the valley below. Lives destroyed, death and destruction wiped away dreams, loved ones, friends. This is so sad.😢

I totally feel bad for the owner of that destroyed custom 389 Peterbilt. That's at least $350,000 lost.
@OffroadvikingАй бұрын
What's crazy is when I was filming it I had no idea who it belonged to. Found out later it was owned by a guy i went to school with. He had just finished redoing the entire truck right before the flood.
@JasonMyers-c6zАй бұрын
That's sad as hell. I hope he's ok.
@OffroadvikingАй бұрын
@@JasonMyers-c6z He is, fortunately he wasn't driving when the flood hit. He had the truck sitting in a garage near the river. He has a tik tok account with the build progress of the truck if you want to see that. Just search Andy Paul on TikTok and it should pull up.
