Misa's ability to pick, slap and pop at lightning speed is so impressive to me. She has said in interviews it took a lot of practise to perfect the pick tuck when she goes from picking to slapping. Her growling bass tone makes me very happy ❤😄🤘

Tucking the pick is fairly easy to do for me, but I use textured pics and have larger hands than her. No idea what picks MISA uses.

@@PaleHorseShabuShabu 2016 to 2018 MISA used Fernandes 0.8mm P-100NT, History HP1 GPM Medium and Jim Dunlop 0.73mm Tortex Triangle. From 2018 to today she uses Kurosawa Gakki 0.8mm Original Model Flex Triangle - made of Polyacetal and with the Band-Maid logo on one side and MISA's signature print on the other. Notice she uses triangle picks (3 points) which helps with her pick-tuck.

Not forgetting the speed and precision of the octave slides she does almost _non stop_ on a lot of numbers. Saw a post-gig interview with the band somewhere and she was holding an ice-pack on her left wrist - jaysus, she works so hard.

It's a Zemaitis "Aces and Eights" - one of many of Miku's collection of Zemaitis guitars. Before Zemaitis built the "Flappy Pidgeon" for her, she used a variety of Zemaitis guitars. She has a "Buccaneer Island" Disc front and at least one "Pearl Front" and, of course, her Heart Shaped Hole acoustic. Zemaitis has figured out how to make uniquely great looking guitars that not only look beautiful, but also play and sound great as well. Zemaitis LOVES the publicity she gives to them. As you can imagine, Miku draws attention everywhere she goes. "Onset" was the Band-Maid song that was my tipping point: the song that told me that I had to go deep down the Band-Maid rabbit hole. I had seen a handful of their videos: "Thrill", "Manners/Black Hole", "Real Existence", and I liked what I had seen so far, but "Onset" was far beyond anything I had ever expected, an epic tour-de-force instrumental. I knew that Band-Maid were good, but now I realized that I had stumbled upon GREATNESS, and that I might be witnessing the G.O.A.T. still relatively early in their career. I wondered if anyone could produce an instrumental better than "Onset", that was two years ago. Since then they released 'Unleash' with "From Now On" and that answered my question. How do they keep doing this? They keep getting better and better. I've seen them twice this year: at St Andrews Hall in Detroit and at Sonic Temple Fest. The shortness of their half hour festival set was the ONLY disappointment, otherwise they killed. The Detroit Okyu-ji was incredible. Seeing Kanami's "Daydreaming" solo was breathtaking.

I have been a big fan of instrumentals since the very early 60's with Don Wilson and The Ventures, The Shadows from England, The Rip Chords, The Tornados and a couple I can't remember. A lot of people think instrumentals are just musicians jamming on stage, but especially with Band Maid they are complex compositions that are blended perfectly. I've seen BM three times since last October and they kill it every time.

Miku is an official Zemaitis artist, so she once in a while gets a new one. This is not their most pricy. Far from it. They got one with a layer of mother-of-pearl, which goes for around 10k. She had her 5 year anniversary in 2021, where they presented her own signature, "flappy pigeon". It went for 5k. But made in a limited number, so...

Chris and Sam, thanks for reacting to the White Room video of Onset. I have seen the official live video of Onset several times, but with the lighting during the live performance it was difficult to observe their technical brilliance. This video is AWESOME!!!!! I love Band Maid and recently shouted out a comment on another reactors comments on Band Maid, BAND MAID IS NEVER BORING! Unfortunately, he thought I was angry at his comments. I wasn't. I was just enthusiastic about Band Maids brilliance in the composition of their approximately 100 recorded songs. They just keep surprising first time reactors and even multiple time reactors with their creations. So thanks for showing me a video of one of their songs I had not seen before. Chris by the way, I love your t-shirt. It certainly is keeping within the Halloween theme.

Keeping my recommendations in a separate comment. Twenty or so songs into a band’s catalog and most would’ve run out of hits. Not even close with the Maids. Here are some from my personal top ten you deserve to have on your playlist: “Real Existence,” gotta do the live. “Secret my lips,” goofy title, killer riffage “Moratorium,” live live live! Kanami is called the “Riff Goddess” because of songs like this “Bubble,” in the same sonic space as “Blooming,” but an entirely different song. Video has interesting back story 🤘🏽 thanks for keeping the Maids in rotation, and best of luck with your own music!

I’m so used to the live version, it’s a bit weird hearing a “clean” version! It’s still one of my top instrumental songs ever. From Band-Maid I think From Now On has jumped to the top for me. So of course they make up most of my top songs lol.

As far as I know, there is no studio recording of this instrumental track on an album or EP. This is the nearest that you get to that, as Onset is generally reserved for live performances. Yes, Mike's Zamaitis "Aces and Eights" guitar. First used during 2017 and had been her go to guitar until the "Flappy Pigeon" arrived in 2022. At various times she has used a number of other Zamaitis guitars- Disc Metal Front, Buccaneer Island MF, Tablet front- Chequered Inlay, Flying V MF etc. plus their acoustic guitars with a heart shaped sound hole. Great reaction as usual- Thanks.

Actually, there was "Onset" studio disc. It was a bonus disc to the Double Package of the singles "Bubble" and "Glory". You had to buy them together as a pack and you received a Bonus Disc (total 3 discs) with the "Onset" on it. It's out of print of course. Try to find it, the it's expensive now.

This is the first time I've seen this video for Onset and it gives you a really close look at what the ladies are doing specifically. But in order to get a real feel for the performance you have to react to the live official video, it's just magnificent. Just watching them play this complex composition live with fog, laser lights and darkness on stage shows how good they really are. And Kanami's solo gives me such a southern-rock/Gary Rossington vibe. I've listened to all of their instrumentals and seen several live and to me Onset is my favorite. Miku's guitar is a Zamaitis and I believe she has her own line of guitars from them. It really is an interesting design with all the scroll work and add-ons. She really has progressed into a top-notch rhythm guitarist after not playing guitar at all. Misa is a true virtuoso on bass, she's just amazing. And the Gorilla, she's just as amazing in her own realm. Her fills are some of the best I've ever heard. And you can see that she is having a shitload of fun while playing.

I bet now you regret taking so long to watch this. You really should also check out the Live version from their channel which was from their 2018 Zepp Tokyo performance. And Kanami normally keeps the trem on her guitar locked down. Onset is I think the only songs she uses it on. At least it is the only song I've seen video of her using it. In the past before she switched to her 35th anniversary "Angry Larry" PRS, she would always switch to her Green PRS Custom 22 for playing Onset. In the past during shows in Japan, she would have 4 guitars to cover all of her tunings. Now she has her 35th anv, and her Violet Burst PRS Custom 24 that she tours with. I tried to get a picture of her Violet Burst in Houston, but Dai-San was blocking it. And others have said, Miku was using her Zemaitis "Aces and Eights" A24MF guitar. While MISA was using her Black Cloud "Black Smoker". And of course Akane has her Tama Star Bubinga kit with Ludwig Black Beauty Snare, and her custom/modified DW5000 double pedal.

I still remember the impact and how I was astonished by this instrumental song. In the live version, Kanami's delay effect was a bit stronger and clearer, which sounds great. I also love the way Misa and Kanami appeared in this live version. A camera focused on each of them in the dark with a spotlight and smoke, which gives you the impression of a hero in a Marvel film. Please check out the live version!

I have one little Band-Maid brag. I was at the first live show where Onset was performed. At that point, it hadn't been released anywhere yet. It was at the Nagoya Diamond Hall show on April 4th, 2018. For frame of reference, this was 9 days before the Zepp Tokyo show where the live version of Domination was filmed. (A friend of mine had an extra ticket for me that I could have used for the Zepp show, but the person I was traveling with didn't want to go back to Tokyo a day earlier than originally planned.) But, the interesting thing about the show when this song started was that nobody knew what it was. It came out of nowhere. It was the band's first instrumental piece, so nobody was sure what was going on when the band started playing after Saiki left the stage.

Miku plays Zemaitis guitars, a Japanese owned company. She also has a signature model with them, which even took her by surprise. Her coming together with the company was a bit of a fluke and a great story. Basically, Zemaitis was interested in recruting Kanami, but Miku wanted to tag along and they formed a partnership by coincidence, as Kanami preferred her PRS's. Miku has always had some great looking guitars, but my favorite of hers was the one she uses in "Bubble". The stonework on the face of that guitar is gorgeous!
