The song title is actually a play on words. Below is a copy of what I was told. ----------------------------------------------------- The members of BAND-MAID once said this during the MC for OKYUJI in Japan. The English word "HATE (phonetic symbols: héit)" is pronounced in the Romanized pronunciation as "hate (phonetic symbols: hǝte, hate)," which means "? =Question mark" in Japanese. So they seem to enjoy pronouncing this song as "Hate (hǝte)?" in the Romanized pronunciation on purpose (tilting their head to the side), not as "HATE (héit)" in English! So, the title of the song, "?" is just a pun that Japanese people can understand.

Band-Maid is in the unusual position of having five uniquely talented members. Yes, Misa and Kanami are center stage showcasing their talent here, but everybody else, Miku Akane, and Saiki, are in top form throughout. Akane ties everything together with incredible drumming (Triplets, triplets, everywhere!), Saiki is at the top of her vocal form, sarcastically belting out the lyrics she penned, and Miku? Miku is shredding away backing both Misa and Kanami during their "battle" - put on your best headphones and listen in the left channel and you'll hear Miku doing some excellent playing. And Miku is priceless when she sings: "Why Don't You Try To Un-der-stand Me?" That Band-Maid can make it all look so effortless, so fluid, so organic, shows that they have this performance as meticulously planned as a scene from an epic movie. Kudos to Band-Maid!

If you put the guitar/bass duel into context of the sound of a couple arguing, heard through an apartment wall, that fits with the lyric content which is Saiki absolutely shredding some useless guy (Saiki wrote the lyrics on this one). They did this at Lollapalooza as well, but this sounds so much better. Check out the Choose Me video from this show that Ohrenje edited together from 24 fan cams (the crowd was allowed to film one song on their phones out of 3.5 hours), where Saiki, Misa and Kanami take a stroll around the arena while playing and singing. A comment on translating the Japanese language: Japanese pronouns don't have gender. They use the same pronouns no matter the subject's gender. So all the members of Band-Maid can be translated as "He" unless the translator knows the members' gender, then they refer to them (in English) as "She".

Written by Saiki. The question mark is to do with Japanese grammar and is, like the way Miku also writes, a great interplay between Japanese and English phraseology and grammar that meant the statement she wanted to use, "I hate you", when translated into Japanese ended up being a question. Or something.

From a Japanese fan (pohojisan): "Today, one reactor wondered why there was "?" in the title of "HATE?", so I wrote the reason in its comments section. Having heard that this song is apparently dedicated to a cheating (ex-)husband of a friend, I interpret Kanami's battle with Misa like the arguments in a failing marriage. The guitar proceeds into a monologue (the solo) that escalates into an outburst of frustration with increasingly hard power chords (even more so in the Lollapalooza performance), erratic screeches and fast tapping. The ability to tell a story without spoken words, without being limited by a particular language used in a particular place, to convey relatable emotion, is what Kanami's guitar playing and composing mean to me.
