Tolkien was fighting in WW1 and the that french saying thus made it into the Lord of the Rings book... so this is where that Gandalf line comes from.

Most of their songs are about Military history (9 of 10 albums). They have their own history channel, where they give the history behind the music, at least 1 episode for every song. "Fields of Verdun" is from the 2019 9th album, The Great War. That album, as well as the 10th album, The War To End All Wars, are both about WW I stories. Yes, please do more from them. Suggest "Bismarck", "Christmas Truce", or any of the animated story videos ("Night Witches", "No Bullets Fly", "Lady of the Dark", "The Red Baron", "The First Soldier"). "Night Witches" definitely is not slower.

Yeah, Sabaton is a category all to themselves as there is no other band end to end like them. One of the best live shows I've ever seen. Some of my favorite songs I'd recommend checking out is Bismarck (official video), Far from the Fame ( live at Wacken 2019), Uprising (Live Video), En Livsid I Krig (Live) also turn on your english captions for this one. This group is definitely worth your time to explore more.

After this video you need to watch Pasadena 94 by Nanowar of Steel - it's a parody of Sabaton and features their lead singer Joakim Brodén.

Definitely put it on the list - but I suggest watching _Bismarck_ first, though.

The Sabaton music videos are epic productions, but you guys should also check out a live performance. Uprising, at Polish Woodstock festival is a jaw dropper. A song about the Warsaw Uprising, they had the huge audience enthralled. Nothing like hundreds of thousands of people joining in your chorus!

To learn more about the historical events they sing about, check out KZbin's Sabaton History channel. There's a history professor who's a fan who goes into each one, and he often has a band member with him in the vids. High school history teachers should use these. 😁

Glad you are listening to Sabaton:) For suggestions, "To Hell and Back," from a poem "The Crosses Grow at Anzio" by WW2 soldier Audie Murphy. Murphy got every medal the US has, and some from European nations. The National WW2 Museum describes his actions: On January 26, 1945, 2nd Lieutenant Audie L. Murphy was commanding company B of the 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, near the French village of Holtzwihr when six German tanks and several hundred infantrymen attacked his company. Murphy ordered his men to fall back to defensive positions in nearby woods while he covered their withdrawal and called down artillery to slow the German advance. German fire hit an American tank destroyer nearby and set it on fire. Witnesses later recalled how he “climbed on the burning tank destroyer, which was in danger of blowing up at any moment, and employed its .50 caliber machine gun against the enemy.” From Murphy’s exposed position on top of the burning tank destroyer, he killed over 20 German soldiers and repelled their attack. For more than an hour, Murphy continued to fire the machine gun, despite being wounded in the leg. He then led his company in a counterattack that killed or wounded 50 more German soldiers. On April 23, 1945, at the age of only 19, Murphy received the Medal of Honor for his actions. "" The little French town has a memorial for all the soldiers, but highlights Murphy. Murphy downplayed being a "hero," saying the heroes were the men who died. He suffered from terrible PTS, even while being a movie star in Westerns (Gunsmoke is one of my favorites). He was given addictive pills, and then stayed in a motel room for 5 days for a cold-turkey withdrawl. Murphy also played himself in a film "To Hell and Back." The film, and sections on KZbin, show him fighting off the 6 tanks and German soldiers. The only difference is the film was made in Washington State in nice weather. When Murphy was fighting, it was in January bitter cold. I saw the memorial, and spoke with some of the local French people in the little town. They all knew about him, and said he was a hero. It made me sad for Americans, who don't know everything that he did, including raising awareness of PTS, with a hospital named for him in San Antonio, Texas. Murphy's son, Terry, highly approved of the Sabaton song, because it wasn't weepy, but action-packed, like his dad.

Personally I think Sabaton has made ONE (1) bad/uninteresting song, and that is 1916. Here is a short list of some of my favorites * Bismarck (Fantastic music video, about sinking of the German battle ship) * Carolus Rex (Sound only, but with English text, there are several versions. About one of Sweden's great kings (Karl XII), and totally insane. He took total command over Sweden at age 15. answering only to God. Removed the church as a link between himself and God.) * En livstid i krig (The Swedish version, live from Gothenburg, with English captions. About the 30 year war in Europe, where Sweden was involved. NOTE - this is not fast, but it is heavy anyhow on another level.)

As 1916 is a cover, it can be argued it's not exactly their song.
