Maybe in another life
I could find you there
Pulled away before your time
I can’t deal, it’s so unfair
And it feels
And it feels like
Heaven’s so far away
And it feels
And it feels like
The world has grown cold
Now that you’ve gone away
Leaving flowers on your grave
To show that I still care
But black roses and Hail Marys
Can’t bring back
What’s taken from me
I reach to the sky
And call out your name
And if I could trade
I would
And it feels
And it feels like
Heaven’s so far away
And it stings
Ya it stings now
The world is so cold
Now that you’ve gone away
I reach to the sky
And call out your name
And if I could trade
I would
And it feels
And it feels like
Heaven’s so far away
And it feels
And it feels like
The world has grown cold
Now that you’ve gone away

The original from 1997 feels like its from the perspective of a recent loss. Its loud, its full, its raw. With each instrument the full range of emotions involved is in play and the pain is uncontrolled, almost exploding out in rage and agony against how unfair it was that this person was taken so soon, so abruptly. This rendition is 24 years of life later, the anger and pain has simmered down into sadness and a dull, everpresent ache. Emotions have come back under control, but like the memories and the love, never left. The years that passed let the rage and fire fueled by loss peter out, and now instead of the full range of emotions flung out by each instrument in the original, we have the simple, concentrated display of them humbly put forward solely through the piano and vocals. The years changed the pain, but the feeling never left. If I could trade, I would

The difference is that when I was younger and lost someone, it was harsher, more angry- like the original song. The older we get and the more familiar losing someone becomes or the more time softens the blow, the more it shifts to a slower, sadder feeling. Which is why I really like this song (live or recorded). Makes you want to hug your kids or look at a picture of your passed parents. That said, there are still times when I just want to crank the original version and tell Death to go f*** itself for a while.

This is my all time favorite song. The original version came out when I was a teenager. Both my older brother and I loved the song. We didn't have any money, so we would both try to catch it on the radio, to tape it on a cassette tape. My older brother caught it but I never did, so I would take it from his room once a week to listen to every time I had to cut the grass. I would actually choose to cut the grass so I could listen to it. Then I would put it back in his room without him knowing I had it. When I was 16, he was 18, he then passed away in a car accident. To this day, this song will always have a place in my hurt.

I have lost too many immediate family members in my life, but nothing will ever come close the death of my father. It's been seven years just this past August so now hearing this version really tugs on the heart strings for me. There have been many songs over the years that make me think of him (and others like my grandparents) but this one really hits home for me... Amazing re-recording / new version off a timeless alt rock song from over 20 years ago!

I had rediscovered The Offspring in July 2017. A few days before I went to a convention, I had gone over to a friends house to record an acoustic cover of this track. After going to the convention and moving to Kansas, I woke up on July 21st to find out that my hero had passed away. That day, music was the only thing holding me together. I hit shuffle, and the original version of this song was the first song to pop up. I don't cry easily. That day, I was not myself. Rest in Peace Chester.

Down to the lyrics of the song fit agonizingly perfect when my Dad died last year. The first Verse sends me to tears if I listen to it without it being more than background noise. Basically, I was on my way to work when my car broke down. Called my Mom to let her know I needed to temporarily ditch the car and needed a ride into work. She told me to go to my Dad's place, as they'd been separated since 2009. Before I hung up, she said "you know what, stop at that CVS at the next intersection", a mile from his apartment. Get drove into work a few miles away, oddly enough getting a call from my old man's best friend, asking for my Mom's#. Asked me where I was and when I said work, he didn't tell me why he asked. I'm there for an hour when I get a call of immediate worry. Mom wouldn't say what was wrong, but given that my Dad had recently been injured at work and was more stressed than ever, alongside the odd call from his friend, it didn't take long for the internal suggestion of, It's... Dad, he's gone. I ignored that initially, out of sheer disbelief. My mother's face said everything when I saw her. So that first verse is an emotional sucker punch, because it's essentially the same as Dexter's writing

The Offspring was the first band I ever listened to, and I was gifted Americana on my 12th birthday as the first CD I ever owned. I don’t listen to this kind of music much anymore but I’ll always recognize The Offspring for being the most important band of my youth. I can go back and sing every lyric of every song from every album, and I love them just as much now as I did growing up. That said, the original Gone Away is such a classic, but this is a beautiful take on it.

20+ years ago, I did a high school film analysis project for my English class, based on the original video. I failed that assignment. But what I captured in that essay was deep and evoking and I still stand by what I wrote. Now much older, much more successful I can honestly say - when people are young, their talent is often ignored. It doesn't matter. The value added never decays. It's the environment that changes. Not the person. So if you are young. Reading this. Frustrated with the world. Understand what you see is only a small fragment of the world. You will see more of it as time comes, and you will understand the passion you feel right now is not wrong, it's just in the wrong place. Overtime you will find your place in the world eventually, and people will know you were right all along. Kia Kaha

Very sorry for your loss. When that time comes for me I don't know how I'll cope. I'm living at home at 34 in order to get my life in order because my mother never had the chance. She wanted to be a nurse and her grandparents whom she lived with wouldn't sign for it. She's worked in factories her whole life but she's allowed me to live with her and do what I need to do until I'm ready.

Gone Away really hit me when my mother passed of pancreatic cancer. It seemed to be a manifestation of the anger and frustration that I felt for years after she'd gone. This version is what is left after that anger finally gives way to time, and just the sadness and longing remains. I guess different songs mean different things to different people. And to me, the two versions of this song perfectly encapsulate grief. Screw you for making me feel feels.

They Did It... They Actually Did It... Oh My God I'm Crying 😭 I Know The Original Meaning Of This Song.. But Honestly Hearing This Version Just Makes Me Remember How I Felt When I Heard The Original Version The Very First Time.. And How Life Was So Easier Back Then When I Was A Kid... Now Growing Up And How Life Is Getting More Difficult By The Second... Not Just For Me For All Of Us.. It Feels Like That Yesterday Version Of Us And The Easier Version Of Life Has Really Gone Away... Its Honestly Heart Breaking 😭

This is so powerful and emotional. I had it on repeat all day when the album came out, and love singing along to it. I think the song works far better as a piano ballad then it did as a punk rock song. To me this is the definitive version.

We lost my sister at 36, in 2009…Gone Away was the song 🎶 that made me think of her. She was the baby in the family “our little Mandy” once we got older everyone wanted to protect her because she was so fragile. Kids can be so mean, even siblings. I picked on her to, and apologized a lot as an adult about it, but it was kids being kids. Her death rocked the whole family. My son just sent me the link to this remastered version it beautiful but still simmering of the pain still felt! Melodic like your life is moving a little more smoothly but there are times the emotions 🖤 just hit as if it were yesterday. Love ❤️ this and love The Offspring! Thank you 😊 Blessings and Peace ✝️❤️

The difference between the original version and this one is the emotion represented in it. The original was borne out of anger and sadness over the loss of a loved one whereas this is the result of reflecting on that loss and still feeling the sadness of that loss long after the anger subsided.

Never thought I'd see the day where I'd hear The Offspring do a Five Finger Death Punch song! Sounds great too. Nearly as good as the 5FDP original. They really put their own original stamp on it - almost like they wrote it themselves. That's the mark of a truly great cover song.

Maybe in another life I could find you there Pulled away before your time I can't deal, it's so unfair And it feels And it feels like Heaven is so far away And it feels Yeah, it feels like The world has grown cold Now that you've gone away Leaving flowers on your grave Show that I still care Black roses and Hail Marys Can't bring back what's taken from me I reach to the sky And call out your name And if I could trade I would And it feels And it feels like Heaven is so far away And it stings Yeah, it stings now The world is so cold Now that you've gone away Now that you've gone away I reach to the sky And call out your name And if I could trade I would And it feels And it feels like Heaven is so far away And it feels Yeah, it feels like The world has grown cold Now that you've gone away

@@korrasatsuki8773Sorry but Smash was their breakthrough album and OG's were there for the self titled and ignition albums. They've put so much autotune into this it sounds like a cheap knock off of Dexter, the original was better in every way, musically, pace and vocals. If they'd just used Dexters raw vocal talent I'm sure it would have been so much better.
