I went to their concert last night with my dad and it was amazing. I just lost my Nana two months ago and I was not prepared for him to play this but it was so beautiful and even though I cried my dad was there and it felt like it was just for my nana in that moment. In memory of Shelly 1959-2023

The original is like pain when it first hits. You are pissed off at the world and just want it to end. This is like the feeling of knowing that even though the hurt is still there, things are going to be fine, even if things will never be the same again. Full circle.

I frequently come to this comment section to read this comment. @gwarriorfromhell, you're a wordsmith. I lost my mother 9 years ago when I was 21. The original was always there for me, from the time I was a little guy. When my mom passed, I leaned on it pretty hard through the anger stage. This one allows me to feel at peace with my grief. Your comment has also brought me a peace and unique understanding of this tune I didn't have before.

My dads mom passed in December 2019 and my moms mom died in November 2022. I was sad so I was listening to old music from my childhood and the offspring popped up so I eventually it lead me to this beautiful song and ever since if I start to think about them both I’ll get on here and listen to this song probably 6 times in a row and cry like a fucking baby. I miss them both and I’m glad one of my favorite bands can help me heal. Thank you THE OFFSPRING!

The original 1997 version is beautiful, HOWEVER this version stripped down to bare bones, brings a whole new pain, anguish, and sadness to the lyrics making this much more powerful. The RAWNESS and vulnerability of this makes getting emotional, shedding tears and letting pain easier. THANK YOU for both versions of the song. GOD BLESS YOU GUYS.

This song, and the original version, brings back memories of a girl I liked at work. We were close, but I never told her how I felt. One day we said goodnight and the next morning she was killed in a freak car accident backing out of her driveway. Was almost 50 years ago and it feels like you never forget.

I lost someone I really loved along time ago when I was still young. The original more aggressive version of this song really spoke to me, it was pain, sorrow and anger. Seven years later... My heartS still broken, except the angers gone like this song. Now all thats left is the somber taste of sorrow.

I was listening to Ixnay on the Hombre a week or so ago after discovering how much I actually like these guys' music instead of 1-2 songs, and "Gone Away" came up. Nothing too special, right? I song about losing a loved one in their style. Then came this album and I listened to it in that same week, missing something. Then, at the end of everything, came the piano rendition of that same song. 20-something years after the normal version it's still there, and I couldnt help but feel like there was a reason for it. Back in September of 2022 my wife got pregnant. We were scared as hell as this would be our second child. We decided to name the child “Oliver” Anyways we found out the little baby had passed away and my wife had to have a procedure to remove it. I couldn’t imagine her pain. The lyric of this song that gets me is, “I reach to the sky and call out your name… and if I I could trade I would.” I literally laid down in the grass during a thunderstorm and reached toward the sky and screamed out his name. It was like I was screaming to release all of my pain. It’s something I was embarrassed to admit but you know what? I loved that kid and even though he left me before he was born, he was my boy. Every day I think about how my day would be with my little boy Oliver. I miss you Oliver.
