Amihai Grosz, principal violist of the Berlin Philharmonic - introduced by Alondra de la Parra

Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra meets Amihai Grosz, Principal Violist of the Berlin Philharmonic, in his apartment in Berlin - and to go jogging! They talk about his career, working in an orchestra, his tasks as Principal Violist, what it feels like to live in Berlin, and coronavirus. Grosz plays parts of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Gigue from his Cello Suite No. 1 in G major, BWV 1007 (00:00, 02:42, 05:51) and Sarabande from his Cello Suite No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1008 (09:01), exclusively for de la Parra. In addition, we’ll hear extracts from Franz Schubert’s Octet in F major (04:25, 07:38) performed by the Philharmonic Octet Berlin.
Amihai Grosz is one of the outstanding violists of our time. Born in Jerusalem, he initially took up the violin aged five, before switching to Viola at eleven. He studied with David Chen at the Jerusalem Academy of Music. He later continued his studies with Tabea Zimmermann at Berlin’s Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” and with Haim Taub at the Keshet Eilon Music Center in Israel.
In September 2010, Grosz became principal solo violist with the Berlin Philharmonic. As a soloist, he has played with renowned orchestras such as the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the Israel Chamber Orchestra, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra and the Staatskapelle Berlin. Grosz is a founding member of the Jerusalem String Quartet and is a member of the Philharmonic Octet Berlin.
Grosz’s instrument was made by Gasparo da Salò in the sixteenth century. It was lent to him for life by its private collector.
Alondra de la Parra is a highly acclaimed Mexican conductor. Born in 1980, she made history in 2017 by being appointed the first female conductor and music director of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, one of Australia’s three largest. In 2004 she became the first Mexican woman to conduct in New York. Since then, de la Parra has conducted over 100 orchestras in 20 countries. She is also an official cultural ambassador of Mexico.

For those of you who might be wondering about the fine tuner on the C string (as well as A) it's used to tune that string down during Strauss' Don Juan, and it's much easier to do so than a standard peg!

Eh probably not. They're usually booing violists whenever they can. They just can't boo this one since he's much higher up the chain than them and always will be. TwoSet and their jokes are the reason three of my viola students quit music.... I have no respect for the people in the comments section who contributed to it all.

​@@oxoelfoxo Yes, deadly serious. I actually fell into a depression for about a year thinking I'd failed as a teacher. It seems one teacher can't be as big an inspiration as the silly videos on the internet with a big fan following.... To answer your question, two of my students quit music completely and went to sports (I still keep in contact with the parents). One student decided to take up flute but didn't enjoy it as much and has stopped. She was halfway through Suzuki book 4 after 2 years with me (when on viola) but the bullying at school and negative internet comments and disses out of the mouths of TwoSet became too much.

You're exactly right about kids - they can listen to 50% praise and 50% teasing and will opt to zone in on the teasing and stop doing whatever it is that's causing it. Very unfortunate. They're very sensitive. I would say that it's a bit much to say that my students were "traumatised" but the bullying certainly had an effect on them that made them very upset (we even got to school parent-teacher-principal meetings). What disappointed me most is that my students used to look forward to the next TwoSet video... but now they don't watch them at all. They're more into Netflix now and instead of music they've gone over to sports. I'm hoping they'll return one day. I can only hope...I've encouraged them as much as I can. I even bought one of my students a new (bigger) viola after she'd got an A+ on her exam and she couldn't believe it. She was so overjoyed! I really encouraged them as best as I could. Now that is all out of the window...
