Graeme Souness was in brilliant form on The Keith Andrews Show, talking about Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and much more. Who is better - Van Dijk or Hansen? Brought to you in association with BoyleSports.

Fantastic interview - Souness is at ease and speaking his mind, which is when he's at his best. First time I see this interviewer, but he does a brilliant job here - says just enough to street the conversation and no more. Sound professionalism that.

I’ve never seen Souness looked so relaxed since he had Hansen and Lawrenson at his back - fair play mate - so lovely to be in a place where you feel comfortable enough to say what you think and be yourself - massive respect!!!!!

Yes. Loved it. It's quite annoying watching these types of football discussion clips where they're obviously talking unnaturally loud and on top of that they play sound effects and music in the background during the show. This on the other hand was fantastic.

Graeme Souness, you are a legend Sir. You are one of the best pundits. You are old school and you are acutely aware of it. Don't be bashful about it. Be proud. Please speak more about responsibility and the culture of winning. You were the best midfielder at LFC during their most dominant period. A great champion. You know what it takes to win. For years you were surrounded by others like you, so it all just makes sense. To you it is obvious. Most people need that drummed into them over and over. It is only boring if you don't want to understand how to win. There is a serious lack of leadership in modern pro sports. Too many false pressures (media, stats, money, agents etc) cloud what is truly important - which is, or should be, winning as a team. Take a look at the squads being built at Man City and Liverpool -- Sure, lots of money spent on some talented players, but the personalities we see all contribute to a long term culture of success. Pep and Klopp love responsible pros - Hendo, Milner, Wijnaldum and others - Not always the most technically gifted, but they stay fit and drive everyone to push harder when the going gets tough. It all starts in the head, victory, defeat, sucess, failure, passion, indifference. It must happen in the head before it can happen anywhere else. In team sport, you all need to be of one superior mindset if you want to be the best team. Some people call that arrogance. It is merely supreme confidence. Liverpool of the 70's and 80's .... Milan with Baresi and Maldini ...... Utd under Fergie ....... Madrid ....... Barcelona ..... Bayern ...... Michael Jordan .... Viv Richards etc etc. Winning is a mentality. Talent helps. We need more experts and critics speaking more loudly about responsibility and the culture of winning.

Graeme is great bloke, but he shows the exact same problem as Jose. The sport has left him behind. football systems and tactics are more complex now than "go figure it out", or "you're good, now get on". the margins for errors are so much smaller than the days Graeme played or coached. GS knows that he is seeing something special at City or LFC, but he still can't seem to wrap his mind around the fact that the game is played at a faster speed all around and sitting back and trying to bully your opponents with old right proper "English" football is a joke. Just look at Beckham's generation of the national team. They got worked because Spain, France and Brasil were playing modern football against English nostalgia.
@botany500kojak4 жыл бұрын
England were managed by foreigners at that time. Liverpool and Forest when they were successful in Europe in the 70s and 80s were never 'old right proper "English" football'. Sitting back sounds more like the Italian way rather than the usual gung-ho English stereotype of football.
@cityslacker62214 жыл бұрын
Botany 500 , Hi Botany, that post is almost two years old. Now that LFC has run the league, Grahame has learned a bit about modern football. I did not mean to infer that the classic English style was to sit back in general, we all know that is not true; but it has to do with the back line and wingbacks and even defensive middies who are now required by many coaches to play fast paced explosive build up play. Yes, there is always a place for muscle, but look how much Harry Maguire has NOT stood out compared to the likes of Van Dijk or Laporte. He barely even has the confidence to "bully" defenders the way Grahame prefers. As for the forward english style I was also referring, Grahame has barely come around. The hoof it forward and let your 6 foot 2 striker bully goals is also out of style, because that Striker is now asked to counter press harder if they lose the ball and to move more off the ball to be in position to help keep possession. I like to give Grahame stick, but he isn't all that bad. He is no Merson that's for sure.

Wish GS would act this way on Sky. As a player - an LFC great, but he is dour pundit tbh. As LFC manager he banned player's post-game fish n' chips and the players hated it and stopped playing for him. Glad Klopp brought the LFC tradition back - top of PL.
@nickforde98585 жыл бұрын
That wasn't why they stopped playing for him. Forget the fish and chips. He got rid of the boot room, got rid of players like Whelan, Beardsley, Houghton etc and replaced them with inferior players. Ian Rush for instance was peeved as he bought in the likes of Dean Saunders who earnt far more than Rush who had done everything for the club.
