The people of the Swedenborg Foundation in these videos emphasize empathy and treating one another with goodness and respect regardless of nationality, religion, race or political affiliation. I believe Emanuel Swedenborg is peeking through a window of Heaven and smiling. The Swedenborg Foundation is an important and ground-breaking source to help us in the betterment of socialization and how we interact and behave. Every book and video this foundation supports and brings to us loving and protective arms from the souls of angels still on this earth.

I just want to say I've discovered Swedenborg through Goethe and Kant one day and he has changed my and profoundly deepened my outlook on the afterlife, something I think about frequently. I love your show! The host is very smart, loving, and wise. Yes you do talk a lot, but you're on FIRE for God and man I just love it! Great to have a human being on earth like you! So thank for the depths of my heart. Anyway, I bought Heave and Hell and plan on buying and studying all of Swedenborg's books. The world needs more Swedenborg, but as he has said, and a multitude of others, we live in free will. Joyfully, we can live in the assertion of life closer to God after death if we choose to. God bless!

Searching for decades through religion/philosophy/psychology for clues about "reality" - I thought I was pretty smart - until reading Swedenborg. This group of videos gives me encouragement to keep studying his books, and already I find my presumptions are changing about what's "really" good and true. Many thanks to everyone at SF!

I admit to struggling greatly with loving humans who harm the innocent ... children, animals etc. I struggle greatly with loving my in-laws. for they care more about giving huge sums of money to their church, while letting their son & I lose our home. I think the best I can do is wish for their healing ,,, while also realizing that I, too, am heavily faulted. whew!!! ... this is not an easy one, Curtis, especially when dealing with evil actions. I do love the lesson and for many can easily practice it. It's the tough situations where I fail.
@offTheLeftEye

I'm really glad you reached out, Holly. It sounds like you're in a challenging spot right now, and I can see why you'd be struggling with in-laws. Perhaps what's most potent about your message is where you take it from there. Loving others (especially through the situation you describe) is so hard, and it can be easy to forget our imperfections during those times. Even if these challenging relationships exist, we still have the freedom to work on our own inner life. That is what I love about Swedenborg's teachings. We can create heaven within, even if there's chaos around us. We've made a few videos that speak to this, if you're interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3quYWOPnMSlmZo kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXeWeKKhpZlnh9E kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHStkIpvoapjmdE ALWAYS feel free to reach out with questions or comments. Second to showing your self love, forgiveness is next important. If you can show others forgiveness, then really you are learning to forgive yourself. Your methods spoken here are the way to move toward forgiving yourself and others. In the end, this is how world peace happens. Many blessings.

I suffered from an Anxiety disorder for many, many years (caused by a Thyroid disorder) part of the symptom I had with my sickness was having a short sometimes explosive temper, If someone said or did something I did not like... Watch out! when I got mad I often scared people after all I am built like a foot ball player. But I always felt so bad afterwards because I am a nice guy and I do care about others and I don't understand why I get so mad. I would Pray to God to forgive me for my angry out bursts, I just have such a hard time getting a grip over myself. But then my Doctor gave me medication for my anxiety problem and its really working well for me, my anxiety is about 85% gone and so is my out bursts of Anger. The point is sometimes we act unkind towards others because we are not well, So if this is you please see your Doctor it might be medical in nature.

Nice 100th show! i think much more should be elaborated on how to Love everyone and how to handle a variety of situations, in the workplace, with family, and any difficult situations. I think Swedenborg's extensive insights and also blend in some Buddhist proverbs, Christian verses, Jung psychology, NDE accounts, symbolism in art, and lyrics by musicians-- for added dimension, and various other wisdom

First, congratulations on you 100th presentation, it is so nice to have something good to watch that inspires me to be a better person. Second, I have a great example of this. I worked for a person who surrounded herself and acted on negativity. She would look for ways to make everyone miserable. I blamed her for my misery. Every day, I hated to go to work, knowing that I was going to be in a negative environment. Worse, this was someone I had thought was a friend, so, in an effort to try and be supportive, I continued to work there. I finally could not do this anymore. I finally left to find a more positive environment in which to work. Fortunately, I found a great place and could not be more happier. Looking back, I see that it was not her that was the problem. It was me. I chose to stay in something I knew was not conducive to my well being. It inspired the others who worked there to realize that they did not need to be belittled. demeaned or insulted on a daily basis and move on as well. She has continued to lose her employees over and over again. I have not thought about this person or the negative behavior she presented since I left. I can only wish the best for her and hope she finds a more positive way in which to live her life.

Imagine that every day a stranger passes your way for whom you hold the answer to a prayer. Every day. Imagine that within the gratuities of life that have been afforded you - whatever your lot - there is one singular gesture of goodwill, however great or small, that you and only you are obliged in spirit to do for another. Every day. Imagine that this stranger is no stranger at all but a gift that has been sent to you (as you are also a gift sent to them) and that one such stranger will pass you by again tomorrow ... and the next day ... and the next, until all your days are done. Every day. Imagine that within the gesture of goodwill you are obliged in spirit to do for another, there is the realization of a special gift they too have for a stranger that comes to pass their way, and that their transient is no stranger at all but a gift that has been sent to them as will another be tomorrow and all tomorrows hence. Every day. Imagine ...

When I do something bad there is never a shortage of excuses excusing my badness, but now with the new understanding, which is to say when I see my girl being irrational I immediately know that the negative influx has her in its grip, allowing me to step in forgive and move on, with all the love in my heart. Anger management is a skill that I never stop getting better at, and never will as long as my desire to conquer my anger exists.

Vera that makes us smile. Our hope is to help people lead better, more vibrant lives. Bless you today as you try to live a good life. I too was very inspired by these three simples ways to love people. I remember when I first heard it, thinking "This is not too hard! I can do this!" The notion that someone else is more than a single attribute is a big one for me. I do not want to be squeezed into a tiny box based on a poor choice so how about I give others the benefit of the doubt that they are not defined by one either. Also the suggestion that I could want more happiness for others is liberating. We see it play out sometimes, in heroic acts, or when parents sacrifice for their children. But it happens in small ways too, even as ordinary as giving someone your place in line, or being pleased that they did well at work (even if I didn't)

It is possible to block angry thoughts about other people, but it requires practice so that it works into my automaticc pattern of thought. This is hard, but worthwhile, not something I can always do. I havee certainly noticed how negative or angry thoughts creating a love vacuum in me is where helllish thoughts rush in. This video is so profound. Seeing other human beings as just that - human beings, equal to me and sentient beings of equal status to me and precious to God is essential in sharpening my own spiritual awareness . Other people are not just obstacles to what I want. With this in mind, presumably we could end conflict and bring about a better society for everyone since over time listening to each other would bring respect through empathy; and out of that could bring real change in a loving sisterhood and brotherhood of fellow human beings in communion with The Lord! In other words "Heaven on Earth". 😊👣👣👣👣👣👣

Maybe the love can simply be a desire not to harm them in return, have understanding and perhaps empathy of their psychological condition all the while trying to hold the boundaries that they continually break in order to attack us in any way they can come up with. I think just trying not to hate is maybe the realistic "love" for someone like this.
@offTheLeftEye
@offTheLeftEye 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I really agree with your thoughts here, Kasia. Swedenborg learned that if we can make the effort to resist hatred and resentment (while of course taking practical measures to establish healthy boundaries), God can be building love and forgiveness in our hearts. That doesn't have to mean emotional feelings of affection, but simply goodwill. Wishing them well in whatever way would be best for all concerned. Maybe check out our show "How to Love" for a discussion about how love takes very different forms in different situations. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2LZfaV8YqeYfbs

I have often contemplated the saying "the path to he'll is paved with good intentions " sure would love to hear some opinions and thoughts here. I've always believed that intent is everything. We all hurt people unintentionally but to harm intentionally is definitely evil.
@offTheLeftEye

Yes, Jay. Chara here, and I don't have an answer but I'll share some thoughts! Perhaps the point of that little aphorism is that if you always only THINK about doing good stuff, but never actually DO good stuff, you have not been of service to the world around you. And our purpose here is, according to the Two Great Commandments, to love God and love our neighbor as ourself. As Swedenborg puts it, to be of use to others, guided by love. But yes, we might hurt people unintentionally -- and THAT's why it's about intention. Our intent was perhaps to be loving and helpful, but for whatever reason, the person on the receiving end took it to be hurtful. A minor example might be: I always appreciate it when my husband opens a car door for me. But I have a friend who feels like holding a door is an insult to her own strengths and abilities. So.... is the guy who holds the door "paving the path to hell" because the friend felt insulted? Or were his intentions to be courteous and kind, and is that more a heavenly thing? Well -- perhaps not the best example. The point is, if we intend well AND carry out those intentions as much as we can, then the Lord is working with us and through us. That doesn't sound like the way to hell, to me. What do you think?
@warrenlittle4241
@warrenlittle4241 8 жыл бұрын
I would suggest another view than 'punishment' as indirect 'help.' Even in your own doctrine it states evil is given their own version of heaven due to Gods love for them. to 'punish' is associated with vengeance, which is vastly different than a compassionate discipline. The entire abuses of the modern prison system, is based on punishment rather than truly reforming in the Spirit of wanting them to be happier than you. To be consistent, the concept of 'punishing' versus doing whats needed to heal the situation and person is self righteous. Righteousness is doing whats best for all in the Spirit of Love, or right acting in accordance with the collective to include the person whose thoughts are out of harmony due to being influenced by hellish spirits. To punish someone for being influenced or controlled by evil influences (which is covered in the thoughts portion of the teachings), in no way helps those afflicted, thus a growing prison population and crime. it takes dealing with the entire situation with Love and compassion to heal a lack of it in someone, not more negativity. More of the same energy adds to it which is basic science. As for forgiveness, it is Divine in virtue, and if not able to love the worst of God, how can one Love truly at all in the name of Christ? As someone who begged for spiritual help for years while under attack, and ignored by all except one, Society en large is still ignorant of the very real spirit world surrounding us, dismissing it as 'psychosis' rather than the spiritual reality we live in. I would suggest remembering that if folks are acting in horrific ways, no sane person wants to, nor would be condemned eternally for reacting poorly to the environment they were individually born into. That would not be logical for any loving Heavenly Mother or Father. So seeing them as temporarily having an experience for their eternal growth, allows for a loving view to be embraced more easily. All return to Love, and there are stops on the way, but nobody spends eternity in evil. Our spark of Love eventually is nurtured enough through eternal experience to achieve Divine Love. That is Creational Justice. No one is abandoned by God...and GOD is also Feminine.

The way I look at other people is they are exactly the same as I am, The same spirit of God is in them as is in me. There is only one God so there for there is only one spirit from God and we are all that spirit divided against its self countless of times like a piece of a never ending pie. You are me and I am you, but we are living different lives of basically the same life. Its really a heavy thought but its true just ponder on it awhile.

how does this work, if i were to make someone happier for something that is not good for me, but good for them; Should we still do it ? everyone is selfish and want to think about themselves first. e.g. I have to prepare for my assignments(the only time slot i have), but this bunch of friends really want to come over my house and hangout. Should I make them happy, keeping my goals aside ?
@offTheLeftEye
@offTheLeftEye 8 жыл бұрын
Hi, Violet! I would say, think about what is the most useful in a long-term sense. In this case, it seems to me that preparing for your assignments is important, if you have a long-term goal of getting an education. If this is the only time-slot available, you can explain that to your friends, and express hope that they could hang out with you another time. Maybe suggest another time that would work better for you. It's not that the friendships are not important, but that hanging out could happen another time, while it sounds like the assignments could not. Making friends happy in a short-term, temporary way is not the most important thing. Being honest with them, and expecting respect for your needs just as you would respect their needs, makes for a healthier, more real friendship. I can't know exactly your situation, or know exactly what the right thing is for you to do, but that is what I would do in the situation you describe.

Swedenborg's take is that we are to look for the good in everybody and love what is GOOD in them, what is "of the Lord" in them. And to believe that we are all beloved creations of God, all destined for a life with him in heaven, if we so choose!
@freiagalacar3465
@freiagalacar3465 4 жыл бұрын
The only teaching of Swedenborg that I don't completely agree with are his ideas of self love which he views as evil. I actually think what he might be referring to is narcissism, not true heavenly self love. Self love is healthy if you're recognizing the spark of God that lives within you. The true self within us is a piece of the creator, neither better nor worse but equal to everyone else. If one truly loves God then they cannot leave themselves out of the equation because to do that would be the same as denying a part of Him.
@offTheLeftEye
@offTheLeftEye 4 жыл бұрын
I think you're right, Freia! When Swedenborg talks about self love, he is talking about selfISH love - love of self above or instead of all others, and I think "narcissism" is a great description of that! I totally agree that self love is actually very important, healthy, and can be done with humility. In fact, if we aren't comfortable with ourselves, or taking care of ourselves, we have less to offer to others. Loving ourselves keeps us strong and healthy, mentally, physically, AND spiritually, and we can be of incredible use from that place of strength! So in many ways, it's a disservice to others when we do NOT love ourselves. So yes, when you hear Swedenborg talking about "love of self' or "self love," just do a mental translation to "narcissism" or "self absorption" or something along those lines. I love what you say here: "Self love is healthy if you're recognizing the spark of God that lives within you. The true self within us is a piece of the creator, neither better nor worse but equal to everyone else. If one truly loves God then they cannot leave themselves out of the equation because to do that would be the same as denying a part of Him." Very wise insight, so so true, thanks so much for sharing that!

I have a question...What if this person is a sociopath and physically incapable of loving others, how are they going to create a state of mind in themselves? If this person is creating a living hell for you it makes it nearly impossible to thing of the good in the, because it's not visible as the good things they may do are done for selfish reasons. And will there ever be a relationship with them if it's a family member? Because most psychologists says this disorder does not have a cure the only cure is for them to recognize it and decide they want to change it but if that's not who they are then....? I'm so sorry you're dealing with what sounds like an extremely difficult and heavy-hearted situation, Lara. There are some people whose mental state is such that they don't have the rationality to choose how they behave, and that can make life so hard for everyone around them. It can take an effort of will to just remember that God created their SOUL to be a free, happy, reasonable spirit, but that something in the physical/brain-chemistry make-up is causing problems. That might help you access some compassion, but it doesn't make dealing with the day-to-day realities much easier... I hope you can find some help (other family members? friends? therapists?) in figuring out how to be as caring as possible towards this person. We have a few shows about the spiritual influence in some mental illnesses. Let us know if you'd like some video suggestions along those lines. Different strokes for different folks, I guess, G. Some people are so grateful for the analogies and skits that help make the ideas become real and relevant to them. There are other more academic and scholarly approaches to Swedenborg out there -- Off the Left Eye is an attempt at reaching people in a more personable way. You might want to go to swedenborg.com, and perhaps look at the tab called "Books, Blogs, and Videos," where you can access some scholarly articles. Or you might want to check out the Center for Swedenborgian Studies at the Pacific School of Religion in the San Francisco Bay area. Or there are lots of other sources for sermons, talks, videos. Let us know if you'd like more. And of course you can go straight to the source and just read Swedenborg's books for yourself. Most of them are available for free download at swedenborg.com, or you can buy them very inexpensively as ebooks, or you can invest in the hard copies. Best of luck to you, finding the approach that serves you best.

Swedenborg did know about mental illnesses in which a person cannot access rationality, and thus is not equipped to recognize their faulty behavior or make changes. Did you see the links I recommended in my previous replies to you, under the episode "The Good Thing About Hell?" People who are incapable of making rational realizations or change during earthly life will be helped to see things clearly in the afterlife, and then make choices about how they want to proceed from there.
