Just thought I would point out that you don't need to suspend the pipe at all. As long as the highest point in your downstream connection is below you source (tank) output, you will have pressure to create flow. You could run your pipe along the ground till the bottom of the hill, and then have it T up to your valve for filling the firetruck tank. Your pressure head will be the same at the outlet (mostly, because your losses from pipe bends will be of negligible difference) regardless of whether or not you suspend the pipe. You would just need to make sure that you can drain from the lowest point to prevent any burst pipes from freezing.
@brawdys

even if the highest point is higher than the source, it will flow, once the air is cleared (syphon) - as long as the end point is lower than the source.

MATT.......simplify the process here. First off...don't hang your pvc pipe....keep it on the ground. When at the bottom of the hill on the range with the firetruck....use your trash pump as a suction to pull the water flow from the tank at the top of the hill down into the firetruck tank. This will dramatically increase your ability to fill the firetruck faster then just using gravity. Also use quick connects when connecting from the pump to the pvc pipe. You can use this same process if you have a nearby pond to suction from the pond into the firetruck....just use a submersible debris screen.

@@mikeb9478 He's saying to flip the connections on the pump that's already on the truck so that it pulls water from the pipe and pumps it into the firetruck tank. It wouldn't be quick if he needed to refill the tank in an emergency, and he wouldn't be able to keep spraying as the tank refilled. I honestly don't see the point in refilling the truck tank with the pipe anyway. If he needs more than 500 gallons to put out a fire on the range, I'm thinking it's probably more than he could handle. And there's no point in using it to refill the truck tank in a non-emergency situation because you're just going to have to use the truck to refill the tank on the hill.

Elevation in feet x .433 = psi. I used to work for a public water supply and they are required to provide 35 psi to your water meter. If they have a gravity feed system they need roughly 80 ft of elevation to accomplish this. Good luck. Also using bigger pipe helps maintain pressure over a long run of pipe.

Vibrating pumps needs flexible fittings before solid pipes in order to prevent stress fractures (=cracks) so when replacing the pump casing (or pump) also get some AV (Bellow) fittings between the pump and the pipes to ensure the new pump casing doesn't suffer the same fate.

I suggest you dig foundations infront of the water tank, just incase rain and mud has it slide down the hill, especially with the weight of a full water tank, at an angle, at the top of a hill sitting on mud. Maybe just dig anything robust and heavey/long, like maybe scaffolding pipes, or concrete rail things, dug down horizontally. Yes, that's a lot of work. But if it saves the full water tank going down the hill, it's probably worth it. That's a beautiful sunset too BTW. God bless you all.

My family has an old hunting cabin in the woods on top of an artesian well. We pumped the water up the hill to a buried water tank while the generator ran and buried a pipe very similar to this back to the cabin. We finally redid the system a couple of years ago after it was working fine for over 50 years. We ended up using the same design but with simplified plumbing and modern materials. I'm not saying its the "right" way to do it, but I am saying that it's not the wrong way.

If you put it on a platform, like a small water tower, you can have it alot closer and get better pressure. And could even fill it up with an electric water pump from the ranch fire truck. Water towers are so tall because they supply pressure to entire towns or neighborhoods. And if you go from a 3in pipe to a 1in pipe/hose you can multiply the pressure. The higher the tank + the decrease in pipe = pressure. That's if you start from a bigger pipe and narrow down. It forces it through. Kind of like when you put your thumb into a waterhose. Hope it helps

It would only take minor piping modification to the water pump attachments. You could also use the pump modification to fill the fire truck faster than 45 minutes with a small modification on the 1000 gal tank.

No need to hang the pipe above ground. If the head pressure is above the discarge the water will flow. You can leave the pipe laying on the ground, then run it up the side of the tree. Maybe fill on the other side of the tree so you dont' run over the pipe. Also, you might think about vents. One on the top of the line to allow air in to purge the line for winter, also one at the lowest point to empty the line. Plus an air vent in the top of the tank to allow the tank to discharge without creating a vaccum in the tank.

And any Tractor Supply will have rubber hose-ends for fillpipes. Just a floppy rubber or plastic tube you hose-clamp to the bottom of an elbow on the end of the pipe.

Matt you love building things. Build a 15ft platform for the tank then you would get your 23 psi at the easy route.

108', same width as a iowa class, also if you want to winterize that pipe without draining the tank, you need to put a T after the dump valve that can be opened to let air into the pipe so it doesn't airlock

You'll get better PSI as well if you use a reduction fitting from that 2" to a hose diameter.

Water line can run down hill then up hill. As long as the exit is lower than the reservoir. Ask Mayer. Her style of Engineering for sure, hydro for the win.

You can replace the housing, but sometimes the pup housing can cost nearly as much as a new pump. Also, just a suggestion, you need to cushion your entire pump frame from the truck. You can get away with rubber matting, but I would suggest rubber mounts. This will lessen the shock on the pump from driving around in rougher terrain and you won't have another pump housing breakage.

i'm thinking it would have just been easier to put your water tank next to your lean-to and getting the same kind of pump on it as the one on your armory at demo ranch. you could either use solar or a generator and then use a 100 foot hose or something... and then when it rains, you could collect the water that hits your lean-to to fill the water tank.

Matt, place a large tarp over the tank, suspend the 4 corners on polls above the tank, and a drain in the middle of the tarp, then when it rain all the water will run to the middle of the tarp and fill the tank.

Matt, the cable will be cutting into that tree fairly quickly. With that much weight, it will cut right through it. Been there, and done that.

Could've put the tank next to the little pavilion, bulid a shed around it for protection and put a electrical pump in it. Easy as that.

You could put it on an elevated platform for starters . Then start off with a bigger pipe and go to a smaller pipe for more pressure . Love the SHOW ! !

I think people fail to realize he created a water tower. Hence all the gallons of weight are pushing out the one exit. That's decent pressure in itself untill it drains near empty. Vent the tank, valve the water outlet. Pipe on the ground then 12' vertical to the tank. Or fill the tank from the bottom because gravity does that. Or use the pump on the truck to pump water into the tank with a valved Y inlet into the pump. The pump needs a drain or winterize it with stuff. Full respect to ya.

You will have a fair amout of pressure drop over that distance. An option would be to have an 120 volt demand pump at the bottom to boost your pressure when you open the valve.

You definitely need a bigger water tank on top of the tallest hill that is close to the range. Basically the same system that you have but with a 6" pipe and a tank that can fill in the firetruck 4 or 5 times.

Matt, if you are leaving the pipe above ground you need to paint it (water based exterior paint). Sun will eat that PVC and make it brittle a lot faster than you might think. I'll second other commenters as well, just run the pipe on the ground the whole way down the hill, then go up and over the fire truck.

I like to see what's happening on both channels. Now that your fire truck pump is broken it's a good time to get a proper firefighting system on the truck. Send the truck to a fire truck service/ rebuilder. Look into a Ultra High Pressure pump system. Uses less water ...great for the rural ranch area with limited water system. Example 2 room flashover fire put out in 34 seconds with 17gals of water ...3/4 hose with a 30gpm ultra high pressure pump system. As a guy who likes technology.... Cars...guns this will be a great project to show case and save your life and property until the local fire department can respond. Check out UHP fire system on KZbin. Save the cheap pump for tank refills and transfers. Take care...sub for a while now...that sunset worth the selection of that house.
