Cocona and Maya were like 16 when they did this. Who in the states is rapping like this at 16? You need to check out Maya and Harvey doing "Two Tens", and Jurin and Cocona doing "Nothin'". When you watch those videos, f you're an old school hip-hop head, you will get it. They are the real deal!!!

You are not wrong, I share the same sentiment I’m 50 coming from a heavy metal/ alternative rock influence. And I’ve never felt this passionate again in a band or group like XG. I started to mix up a little bit listening to different kpop groups since 2013, but XG a fairly new group in the scene just hits different. I say it AGAIN, They just hits different! And Im invested! They’re unlike any other groups I know, and nobody is doing it like them

It you want to know more about their origins check out their documentary XTRA XTRA starting with episode XX. One of the reasons why they are loved by so many old school hip hop heads is because they always bring great flows and cadences without having to be vulgar or promiscuous and always having uplifting message for women.

Actually at least Cocona did grow up on American hip-hop and you can tell. As far as Maya's "yo, yo". That wasn't because she doesn't know it's 80's/90's style. It was 100% deliberate and also why she wore that oldschool eye patch. They know exactly what they are doing.

I myself rap and I am a student of the game I have paid attention to all the rappers that came before me. Not just the studio ones, but those real ones they get no real airtime, but come just as hard. I’m all about lyrical flows double entendre’s or triple entendre’s. And out of everybody in K-pop and even western Americanized rap I have not seen anyone who comes close to how these girls spit…. 🤯 the more you get into this group the more you’re going to appreciate them for their style and their respect for other rappers who came before them. Don’t give up on them continue to watch more of their stuff in their content. They just get better and better and woke up, which is one of their most newest ones. Shows how truly polished they have come since been practicing for seven years before debuting. These girls are all around package and let’s not forget about their dancing skills. Which you should check out all their mv’s cause they have dance practice to all of their music videos

So xg tapes are the rap line and tapes 1 through 3 they rap in three different languages. Tape #4 are in all English. The XG Vox videos are the vocal line. Highly suggest checking out Vox #6 to get to know the vocal line also. They are always paying homage to hip hop and R&B artists, current and past.

Cocona and Maya are dope rappers. What Coccona excels at is gruff and grimeyness, while Maya has a more speedy and technical flow. Maya's style is more West Coast, Bay area type style where over articulation is emphasized and used rhythmically. Jurin though is the Queen. She can do grimey and speedy and overrticulation, even though she is not as fluent in English as Maya. There are so many members in the group so they each get a little bit of light in a song, but rarely have enough time imo to really go in and showcase the depth of their skills.

I love your enthusiasm but your insistence that these girls can't possibly have swag is crazy. Swag is universal. And as far as knowing hip hop, you do understand that the Internet has been around for a long time. 😆 It's not impossible that they grew up hearing Western music. As a matter of fact, they did. They pay homage constantly in their music. Some of their influences are old school hip hop and R&B artists. As well as other genres. They wrote the bars for these cyphers. Also, they are knee deep into hip hop culture. Also Cocona has been rapping since she was a third grader, she eats, breathes, and sleeps hip hop culture. Cocona's verse uses a sample of Surround Sound (JID featuring 21 Savage and Baby Tate), which in turn sampled Mos Def's Miss Big Booty (1999).

Really? That is very impressive because to this day (other than Maya) they appear to struggle with the english language during interviews. If they actually write their own stuff individually then they must be spending crazy hours coming up with those bars. So quick info XG came to the states before their debuted. They performed at Head in the clouds in New York and LA. During that same trip, they spent time in the studio in Atlanta, where they worked with several OG producers, rappers, and writer's to put the finishing touches on several of the songs on the first Album.

Original was Dreamville JID Surround Sound, Maya also did a Dreamville J Cole/JID beat. But basically all the rappers although young grew up on rap and R&B and actually Maya has developed into a beast of a rapper. This was 2+ years ago and both Cocona and Maya were 16 if you can believe it. Suggest you check out other XG Tapes and also checked out Maya and Cocona on Show You Can

I’ve subbed so I can enjoy it again with you. Btw…Cocona was only 16 when this was produced. She rapped for her audition at age 11 and said she had been rapping comfortably since she was 8. Here's the thing, almost every country outside the US has adapted the HIP HOP sound. You'd be surprised you'll hear familiar sounding hip-hop genre songs but in another language so yes, some of them grew up with it and it could be a combination of both american hip hop artists and local japanese artists also doing hip hop. Specially cocona who wanted to became a rap artist at a very young age. And by how they're delivering their tracks in english, I JUST KNOW their producers are telling them what these lyrics mean so they are also learning english through the process which is what amazes me.

You right about Coco. She's just different. I also know exactly what you mean about Maya's inflections and I agree but also keep in mind this is some of their earliest stuff. Maya is Japanese born and raised but went to an international school while growing up so she's actually the only one who was fluent in English before joining the group. I believe during the Xypher era, even though she was comfortable with English, she hadn't really locked down her modern rap sound and over annunciated some of her words like the "yo"s you mentioned. She's dialed it back considerably since the Xypher days and she sounds a lot more natural when rapping now as you heard in "Woke Up".

8:45 in this case, it was a lyric set up? lights camera action night stage -> yo yo as a hello to walk out onto the stage imagery kind of same with how she enunciated the uhhh. Early XG debut, Maya was super outgoing tomboy global face promotion for the group so those small detail fit her and on the production side, they encouraged this character. I understand from a OG pov, bars and delivery is what’s appealing. Makes sense and I got to learn from the commentary & reaction

I love this group! 4:14 this is Cocona. She spits hard. The others also kill it but there’s a little something extra with her. And maybe Harvey. Cocona was the one who shaved her head and she did it during the making of that video. So when we see it she did it. I don’t know if they do their own writing, though I thought I saw Cocona had a writing credit on at least one song. But they have a great sound and vibe! 14:26 Jurin is the bin leader of the group and her verse on “Woke Up” killed it: Watch me snap like motorola flip phone/ I don't wanna hit you this hard on a intro/ Bring that bounce like 6-4/ Find me in Tokyo, rappin' in a skirt/ Are you catchin' my drift tho? XGALX is said X galz. That’s the company they’re with (I think). I think on the guy group side the only group with similar energy to their raps is Stray Kids. Especially the 3Racha subunit and their song “3Racha” for a similar vibe to this Cypher. It has a drill sound to it. And they do write their own songs and produce. I appreciate your awareness I’m an older fan of theirs and Stray Kids and I get it since I’m Filipino and not Korean or Japanese I’m always keeping an eye out on my own reactions too.
